Fear the Links - 2/9/10 - Will West Return Vs. Nets?
Good Morning Cavs fans! The Cavaliers put their 11-game winning streak on the line tonight at The Q against the dreadful New Jersey Nets. I keep trying to think of ways the Cavaliers could fall into a trap tonight but I just can't think of a way, especially with the Nets likely to be without Devin Harris. The hope is that Delonte West will return tonight as well, which would be a welcome sight. The Cavaliers schedule gets much tougher after tonight - starting with Orlando on Thursday. Now, on to the links!

LeBron James wins LeBron James Award(Eastern Conference Player of the Week)
Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James was named today as the NBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, February 1st through Sunday, February 7th.
In three games during the week, James averaged an NBA-best 35.0 points on .541 shooting, 7.0 rebounds and 10.3 assists in 40.3 minutes per game. James wins the award for the fifth time this season and the 25th time in his career. He has also won all three Eastern Conference Player of the Month awards presented by Kia Motors this season. With winning all three games this week, James has now led the Cavaliers to an NBA-high tying 11-game winning streak (tied with Boston and the Los Angeles Lakers) and the best record in the NBA at 41-11 (.788) record. Cleveland has also now won nine straight games at home and possesses the best home record in the NBA with a 22-3 (.880) record.

LeBron and Dwight Howard battle for a Big Mac
Is a hard salary cap in the NBA's future?
Brian Windhorst talks about the upcoming owner's meeting in Dallas over All-Star weekend and there are reports that the owners want to see the league go to a 'hard' salary cap, like the NFL has, as opposed to the 'soft' cap with a luxury tax which has been in place for more than a decade. He says this demand could have many consequences, including a potential lockout following the 2010-11 season.
This move could hurt the Cavs because owner Dan Gilbert has shown a willingness to go over the salary cap and pay the luxury tax to take on salaries that other teams are trying to get off their books. This has allowed them to get Mo Williams and Shaquille O'Neal in trades without giving up much talent in return. It would also decrease their flexibility to add players if one player, such as LeBron, takes up a large percentage of the team's salary cap.
This may also mean that LeBron and other big free agent this summer -- such as Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh -- would want to sign long-term deals this summer while the current rules are in place. So we probably won't see LeBron sign an extension for only three years like he did last time.
There hasn't been much written about this proposal yet but we may hear more after the owner's meeting in Dallas. Either way, this will be a very interesting story to follow because it could impact what LeBron and the Cavs do this offseason as well as what happens down the road for the league.

LeBron scores 47, Cavaliers win 11th straight by beating Knicks 113-106
Los Angeles has one of these. So does Boston. Add Cleveland to the list of teams that have 11-game winning streaks this season as the Wine and Gold came out hot, then held on to beat a feisty New York Knicks team 113-106.
For the Cavaliers it was a tale of two halves - 74 points in the first half, just 39 in the second half. 15 assists in the first half, 7 assists in the second half. It was frustrating to watch, but like I said during the game, all teams have a couple like this during an 82-game schedule, right now, the Cavaliers are winning those games.
For James, it was another record-breaking performance. His 35-straight points in the first half was a new team record. It appeared his 56-points in a game record was obtainable too, but the 2nd half blahs that have affected the Cavaliers struck again, this time in the form of Nate Robinson.
Leading 74-54 at halftime, the Cavaliers seemed to put it on cruise control. The teams traded baskets for much of the 3rd Quarter before the Cavaliers went cold, and the Knicks, well, the Knicks started to get hot - red-hot. The Knicks had cut the lead to 11 before the Cavaliers were able to bump it back to 14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Knicks weren't done.

Ahh yes...Good times. The New York Knicks are in town - and their media - and you knows what that means. Well, tonight, not a lot. LeBron James did not speak to the media before the game, standing fast to his pledge of not talking about this summer during the season.
Ok, no Free Agency talk, how about the return of Larry Hughes? That should be fun, right? Nope - Hughes is out of the game with turf toe.
Anything else? Sure there is. There is another chance to remind LeBron that Cleveland is HOME and where he belongs. It is also another chance for LeBron to see just how bad the Knicks are - or, more importantly, just how far away they are from being a contender.
GO CAVS!
3-in the Key
1. The Cavaliers are off to their 2nd best 51-game start in team history(40-11). The team record, set last year, is 41-10. The Cavaliers are 28-6 in their last 34 games, best in the NBA.
2. Along with having the most wins in the NBA, the Cavaliers also lead the NBA in point differential(+7.4)
3. The Cavaliers have held their last 4 opponents under 90 points. The Cavs defense leads the NBA in defensive field goal percentage(.430) and opponent scoring(93.7)

[J.J.] Hickson's ability to finish on the pick-and-roll, as well as the simpatico relationship he's developed with LeBron James has made him an excellent finisher at the rim. The rest of his game remains raw, but the talent is there.
