Pistons Acquire Iverson From Nuggets For Billups, McDyess
According to our friends over at PickAxe and Roll, Allen Iverson is about to be shipped out of Denver in exchange for Chauncey Billups of the Pistons. According to the report, first posted on MLive.com, the Pistons would also send Antonio McDyess to the Nuggest in exchange for Iverson, who never seemed to fit in with Carmello Anthony -
The Detroit Pistons have reached a tentative agreement to trade Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess to the Denver Nuggets for Allen Iverson. Neither player was at this morning's shoot-around. Team officials said that more information would be forthcoming later today.
Through two games, the 32-year-old Billups is averaging 12.5 points and 7.5 assists (14.8 points and 5.5 assists for his career), while the 33-year-old Iverson, is averaging 18.7 points and 6.7 assists through three games (27.7 and 6.3 for his career).
McDyess, 34, has come off the bench to average 7 points and 4 rebounds in a pair of games.
This is obviously big news since the Cavaliers and Pistons are likely to battle it out for the Central Division title and playoff seeding this year. My opinion, for what it is worth, is that the Pistons are worse off with Iverson than Billups, especially in a locker room that includes Rasheed Wallace.

For the record, the Denver Post is reporting that the Nuggets will buy out Antonio Mcdyess’ contract. I kinda wish that we didn’t have Lorenzen Wright under contract right now so that we could make a bid for him if that indeed happens.

Great Point
We do still possess the Mid-level, could we possibly make a run anyway? That is, if Gilbert wants to go even further into the luxury tax…

I think it’s not so much the mid-level as where does he fit? The only non-garaunteed contract we have is Jawad Williams (I believe) and cutting him to sign McDyess gives us 7 big men. Granted, Jackson’s out for another few weeks, but the number crunch is still rough. You’d have to cut Ben and AV’s minutes dramatically (not to mention pretty much eliminating the here and there minutes that Hickson will get).

Yeah, I still think they go after someone younger and more athletic through a trade
McDyess is solid, but I think the Cavs next move will be to get someone more versatile in the front court.

If the Cavs could bring in Mcdyess that would be huge. He would have a chance to throw it in the Pistons face and that would make me happy, but where does he fit in on the depth chart?

My gut says McDyess pulls a Stackhouse
Detroit is way to thin upfront after this deal. Unless they either plan on playing Kwame big minutes or hitch their wagons to playing a constant three guard lineup, they probably plan on resigning him.
That’s just my gut though. I could be way off.

After further reading I disagree with myself
They can probably slide Tayshaun or Herman down to the 4 to fill some minutes there as Johnson will probably fill some minutes at the 5. That would obviously open up more time for the 3 guard lineup. Does that mean Afflalo gets more minutes backing them up? Or do Iverson and Stuckey eat up all the minutes?
Does anyone think there’s any chance that 6’7" Maxiell can play anytime at the 5 or is that just ludicrous.
I’m still trying to figure out rotations in my head. If anyone else has some insight let me know.

Looks like my gut may have been right
McDyess’ reluctance to be included in the deal did not become an issue. He is expected to work out a buy-out with the Nuggets, and then re-sign with Detroit after he clears waivers.

I agree with
FTS that this move is definitely better for us. Iverson will not move the team as well as Billups did AND they lose their biggest bench player in McDyess. Iverson will get his points and kill us individually but I feel he can’t beat us with the TEAM.

Not sure what Dumars is thinking with this trade myself. But I’m all for it since I think Iverson is a step down from Billups.
Although I will be peeved if McDyess comes back and re-signs with the Pistons after his 30 days of freedom. I’d sign him just to prevent him from re-signing with Detroit, but I doubt it will happen based on the comments above.

sounds like it’s a big cap move for this offseason. rasheed and iverson come off the books to the tune of $35mm…that’s a lot of cheese to go chase some difference makers. plus, iverson will still lead them to the post-season.
all that said, though, i love this deal for the cavs. makes the pistons much worse this season.
