Un-Royal Behavior
It was only a matter of time till someone stepped up and said something about the recent LeBron James free agency auction that has been going on. And to no surprise that someone was TNT’s Charles Barkley. Its good to know that I wasn’t the only sports fan out there getting tired of the day by day LeBron sweepstakes, that were being discussed nearly 2 years ahead of time. I could only imagine how I would feel if I were a Cleveland fan.
In a time where we hear about tampering more then ever, and we have actually seen teams penalized for such a crime, this has to be the worst example of this from a players standpoint. LeBron has done nothing to quiet down these rampant rumors of his future move to the New York Knicks. When MJ was on display at Madison Square Garden he used it to prove himself on the biggest stage and to stick it in New York’s face. LeBron on the other hand just uses it to develop a second city to hand him a check. I am just sick and tired of hearing any comparison of these two players. It has to end now. It even bothers me to hear that some think LeBron is better then Kobe Bryant. Kobe is clearly the most complete player in the NBA. Yes, LeBron might excite the fans with his highlight dunks and his knifing to the hoop, but when defended properly in my opinion he is stopped. Besides the one occasion vs. Detroit in the playoffs, this guy hasn’t proven that he can knock down that big jump shot time after time when it counts. But that discussion is for another time. Getting back on the subject, from his new, “Big Apple” sneakers to his Yankee hat wearing, I don’t know how you Cleveland guys handle this. Year after year I have to hear how he doesn’t have the players around him. Then every preseason I hear how this is finally the year he has help, and then when the seasons over where does all the blame go again, but on his supporting cast of course. Don’t get me wrong LeBron is a great player, and I respect him on the court as much as the next guy, but when’s enough, enough. Even I picked LeBron and the Cavs to make the finals this year, and after a 15-3 start, all he wants to be involved in are talks of joining the Knicks two years from now? Couldn’t LeBron stepped up like a man and a true leader and say, “ look guys it’s the 2008 season, we are looking great so far, and I’m doing all I can for us to win it all for the city of Cleveland.” Boom, that would have shut the rumors down instantly. Yes, NY would still be confident of signing him but maybe these talks would come up at the end of the year, instead of in the beginning of a championship run. But this was way to difficult for LeBron.
We know what wasn’t difficult for Lebron and that was responding to these Charles Barkley quotes, “If I was LeBron James, I would shut the hell up,” “I’m a big LeBron fan. He’s a stud. You got to give him his props. I’m getting so annoyed he’s talking about what he’s going to do in two years. I think it’s disrespectful to the game. I think it’s disrespectful to the Cavaliers.” And how would the so-called face of the NBA respond to this little criticism by Sir Charles? “He’s stupid,” That was LeBron’s mature reaction and response to his criticizer, spoken like a true King if you ask me. There was definitely a better way he could have responded to this situation, but he obviously decided to take the high road. And its time like these that really get me mad when I see him wearing the number 23 and hear people speak of him as a Jordan caliber player in the league.

Nice article.
Lebron has lead the Cavs from a league doormat to a perennial contender, one that is currently playing on a championship level. The Cavs are the only consistent winner in Cleveland, and the reason is the King. This is how we handle his off the court shenanigans, which, quite frankly, aren’t that bad to begin with.
Couldn’t LeBron stepped up like a man and a true leader and say, " look guys it’s the 2008 season, we are looking great so far, and I’m doing all I can for us to win it all for the city of Cleveland." Boom, that would have shut the rumors down instantly.
LeBron has said this many times — not those exact words, of course, but the general idea. He has said repeatedly that he’s not worried about free agency and is focused on winning a championship for the Cavs. He has often mentioned how much he loves Ohio. Just a couple days ago, when a reporter asked if the rumors were a distraction to the team, he laughed and said “they’re not a distraction to us; we’re good. It’s a distraction to the Knicks.” What more do you want him to say? I suppose he could ignore the questions and not talk about 2010 at all, but he hasn’t done that and I don’t blame them. When everyone in the NBA is talking about teams freeing cap space to sign him he can’t just pretend that it’s not going on. He’s being honest with his answers and has never said anything bad about Cleveland, the Cavaliers organization, or any of his teammates or coaches. It’s the media that keeps this story going, not LeBron. He could say he loves Cleveland and he’s playing here forever a thousand times and the media wouldn’t believe him and would keep talking about 2010. You can’t really think LeBron saying that would shut down all the rumors. It doesn’t matter what he says; people are going to talk about it.
That being said, I didn’t like his response to Charles Barkley when he called him “stupid” but I guess nobody’s perfect. The Cavs are great this year and the fans should just enjoy the team and not worry about any of this media-created frenzy. I wish people would just appreciate this team and quite worrying about what might happen two years from now.

If all this continues, and LeBron continues to look like he is automatically skipping town when his contract is over, will Cleveland do the unthinkable and think about trading him next season????
I don’t understand why people think it’s certain that LeBron is leaving Cleveland. He has said repeatedly that he wants to win multiple championships and the Cavs have built a team around him that is capable of winning. All this LeBron to New York stuff is just media speculation. People there don’t think he would want to stay in Cleveland but he has said repeatedly that he loves Ohio and being close to home. I wish people would listen to him instead of what the idiots on TV say.
What makes you think he’s “automatically” skipping town? He’s never said anything close to that.

You said it. “unthinkable” and it will never happen under any circumstances! BTW, have you seen how well they play as a team this year? Seems like they are actually improving on each performance. They are going to be a near impossible out in the playoffs.
Oh The People You Meet When Your Out of Ammo.........
hah i picked them to win the eastern conference. I have definitely seen them play. I just dont think Lebron gives Cleveland the respect he should.
Well, I have never had a bunch of potential employers drooling to give me a ton of money to come work for them. I dont know how I would handle it if I did. But, I don’t see this as dis-respect to Cleveland but I can see how that could be read into his actions so far.
Right now , I’am just enjoying this ride and glad we got him now!

Listen Pete, what you are responding to is the mainstream media blowing this whole thing out of proportion.
As a few have said above, LeBron has stated on a few occasions (check out the story when he was stumping for Obama, he clearly states he wants to stay in Cleveland, but this story was not broadcast by ESPN, etal) that he plans to stick around, but does the media report this? Heck no, because that story wouldn’t sell.
When LeBron is talking about 2010, he is not specifically talking about himself per se, but the entire free agent class that year (Wade, Bosh, etc). When he is saying that could be an exciting day, he could just as well mean he looks forward to Ferry being able to offer one of those guys a max contract to play alongside him. But again, the media would never report such a thing.
Second item, when LeBron releases new shoes, to coincide with his NY visits, that is a smart business decision. Where else can he get millions of kids to want to wear his New York themed shoes? He is a fan of the Yankees, but not of the Knicks, that is why he is releasing New York themes shoes anyways. Heck, Nike is the brainchild behind it anyways.
His response to Barkley was rash and not thought out (not like him) but Barkley is just a fool anyways. This Barkley was the one who claimed last year, that the defending Eastern conference champ Cavs, would not even make the playoffs. But then when the Cavs take Boston to the limit, he now changes his tune and says the Cavs will make the finals. Didn’t Barkley throw a man threw a window and spit on a fan during a game? Yeah, Barkley sure is a class act that LeBron needs to follow.
