Shaq off the bench?
http://northstationsports.com/?p=1987
I just read this article, and I think it brings gives the Cavs an excellent idea. I think we would be more effective if we bring him ofgf the bench, because obviously Big Z isn't comfortable coming off the bench, and I think we need him starting to get our game going. JJ is blossoming into a thrilling young forward that excites me for the future. Shaq, whether we like it or not, really does seem to just slow us down, but we could still use him effectively in certain situations. He was pivotal in our win against the Magic, and I think he could really help us in that regard.
What are your thoughts?

But then
If MB indeed does this, does it not subject Shaq to the same troubles, thus making the investment in Shaq pretty much futile? Z states that the problem for him is about acclimating to real time game conditions, which is of course harder to do as one gets older. If that is indeed the problem, Shaq’s game of banging bodies with other centers would take a bigger blow as opposed to Z’s, who can rely more on an outside game than in the post. If Z’s J is shot right no

sorry pressed the enter button prematurely
If you think Z’s J is shot right now (1-12 vs IND), what more Shaq’s game? We’ll have to agree to disagree here, sir. Also, Shaq has been cool up to this point with the shot amounts he’s been getting. Who knows if he can handle heating up the pine?

I disagree
I think Shaq just bring so much to the game that Z does not. Once everyone really gets to play together for a little while, the difference between Shaq and Z’s contributions will be even greater. The ceiling with Shaq on the floor is much higher than with Z.

As Max alluded to
The chemistry isn’t there yet and as much as it pains me to type this, the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of LeBron and Mo. As the team’s leader, LeBron has to get the ball into Shaq on a very regular basis. If this means slowing the game down, then fine. “Having a low post presence” the he “never had before” means nothing if LeBron doesn’t lead the way in utilizing Shaq’s strengths. When Shaq is on the floor, 90% of the first passes in the frontcourt HAVE to go to Shaq……And Mo, as the team’s “quarterback” needs to realize (AP and Gibson too) that on the nights when his shot isn’t there-and there have been a few already this season-his first option should be to go inside to Shaq…
One of five things is going to happen EVERY time they successfully pass inside
1) Shaq scores
2) Shaq passes back out to an open team mate leaving Shaq in position to rebound
3) Shaq scores and is fouled
4) Shaq misses/blocked and is fouled
5) Shaq misses leaving a rebound or tip in as a possibility
Someone-Mike Brown, are you listening?-these guys that just having Shaq doesn’t do the team any good;they have to actually use him consistently for what he can do for the team

off the bench
I can see why you think this would work, i really do, but i dont think it will benefit Oneal because he needs momentum in this offense primarily because he is not the 1st or the 2nd option.
Z has been having problems coming off the bench and you are right when you say he is not comfortable doing so, but he will benefit from it from a health standpoint and the Cavs can control how they use him instead of heavily depending on him and his deteriorating health.
Shaqs health is not much better than Z’s but Shaq has a physical and mental advantage over most defenses simply because he’s “Shaq” and that works when trying to free up our 3 point shooters and it is exactly why we are one of the leagues best 3 point shooting clubs at the moment.
Shaq also gives us a better defensive prescence early in the ball game which is so very important because it then gives us an advantage to be agressive very early (which we are doing) i think when Powe gets healthy and is insterted into the line up off the bench, it will give us many more options on how to play our bigs.
And to address the stagnant offense we been having? it because we are depending so much on Lebron to run the offesne and make plays that it kinds of confuses the roles of the other players around him at times and at most times “unbalances” the offensive structure of the Cavs…..answer? get a real/true point guard and problem solved..instant championship

Alright, I can see your point. As the season goes on, we are obviously getting more comfortable with Shaq in the middle and he’s doing great. And Big Z is getting more comfortable coming off the bench. One thing I love about the Cavs is that NO ONE is complaining about their minutes. It shows how great their chemistry is. Thank you all for your insight.

I think the key thing here is for every player to get used to their respective roles in the team. Shaq has obviously taken a huge cut in play-time and ball touches from his Orlando,LA and Miami days. He is not the 1st or 2nd or (at times) 3rd scoring option. And he said that he is fine with it. But if he comes off the bench, I do not think that he can handle that.
I have followed Shaq since Orlando, and believe me, this whole claim of him slowing the game from all sorts of people, is really a myth. Much like how people always say that he is “fat”, which coach Pat Riley has already went on record and said that it is false. He has actually, only 8-10 percent body fat. And if you look at some of his pictures in civilian clothes, he is actually pretty well built. The whole fat myth came from a comment made by Kobe Bryant way back in Shaq’s LA days, when the team was imploding. Some Kobe fans kept on hammering that comment, just to put down Shaq. When Phoenix first acquired Shaq, he had to undergo a medical/physical test, and they were pleasantly surprised because his physical conditioning was so much better than expected. The whole slowing the game down is the same deal. Phoenix’s offense changed after the All-Star game last season, when they replaced their head-coach Porter with Alvin Gentry, who returned the team to the run-and-gun, albeit with a few modification. Instead of the “7 seconds or less” offense, they went with the “7 seconds or shaq”, and it was mostly effective. Amare Stoudemire, with Shaq, had a better scoring average than he does now, and Phoenix last year were having the same scoring average that they are enjoying now. So, i fail to see how Shaq greatly slowed Phoeinx’s pace last season, when he was an integral part of their offense (he finished as Phoenix’s leading scorer last season, when Amare’s numbers were inelligible because of missed games).

Mike Brown needs to take control
Without a vision, the people perish.
MB has to make his vision for the teams style, tempo, and game plan very clear. Do any of you clearly see a game plan>
