Feeling Cavalier about Wheeling & Dealing
Okay, so the title is cute. I get it.
I realize I'm a Kings fan, and this may not matter to any of you. I don't care as it doesn't keep from spouting off my nonsense in other places anyway.
So here goes. If you need to stop for a drink, I wouldn't blame you, or in the case of Turk, a diet coke.
Next year, the Cleveland Cavaliers have a 73 million and change committed in salary before options. (Which is one reason why I can understand why they are so hesitant despite the argument that Nate Jones made.)
However, that 73 million is only before options which means that the Cavs have some playing around room. Just as importantly for them (other than some guy named James), they will have a ton of cap space to play with in 2010. It's not likely to be 45 million dollars to play with, but if the Cavs don't resign Varejao, it could be somewhere near 35 million.
Let's rock this after the jump.
The Draft Part
Okay, there are only 3 ways to improve your team. Free Agency, Trades or the Draft. The Cavaliers have the 30th overall pick, and no 2nd round pick.
Will that 30th overall pick be a major asset? That's really the question. Would a team be willing to buy the pick? Would the Cavaliers be willing to sell it? Meh, who knows.
I would suggest Cleveland would be better off keeping the pick if a player they could get to back up Mo Williams is available. Patty Mills, who is playing at the Reebok Treviso camp in Italy this week, along with Ricky Rubio and Brandon Jennings, is a quick shoot first PG who can add depth to the PG.
Of the 11 players that are currently possibly under contract for next season, I can see 3 (Jawad Williams, Tarence Kinsey and Darnell Jackson) not returning. That leaves James, Ilgauskas, Williams, Gibson, Wallace, Hickson and West.
What the Cavs do with Szczerbiak, Pavlovic and Smith is anyone's guess. I would bet that of the 3, Joe Smith is more likely to return. But, that's me.
The LeBron bashing portion
I get that people here don't think it's a big deal he didn't shake hands. I do. I think it's disrespectful to players before him, and his teammates who had to cover for him. All it did was show he was a churlish brat. That interview he did with the Yankees hat on only makes that perception much easier to tag him with. Do I care? No, but anyone who wants to argue the guy is so obviously wonderful will have a more difficult time now. That's his fault.
This is similar to his insistence on not doing a slam dunk contest. He thinks it's beneath him. He makes his own rules. Okay, whatever. Just one more reason for me to ignore him. (Not that I'd buy anything LeBron sells anyway.)
Good now that's over.
The Trade propsoal that is bound to piss you off
The Shaq rumor is all the rage right now. And, the Shaq rumor is stupid. It makes little sense for a guy who can't defend anybody in the half court let alone the open court to become the open court Center. And, it's not like you can play him in a variety of ways either. He's going to park his fat 380 lbs ass 3 feet away from the hoop for however many minutes Mike Brown could play him. That means LeBron will have less room to operate inside consistently. Just ask Amare Stoudemire.
Which is why I present that loveable, Zach Randolph. I'm well aware of his warts. So, let's go through them.
He went to a strip club on the way to an airport after the Blazers told him it was okay to go to a family member's funeral. He punched Ruben Patterson in the face. (Actually, I happen to like that myself.) He got a DUI a few months ago. Still, probably not the best decision. Unless, you factor this in.
He's been traded twice in the last 2 years. He didn't fit in with New York, and now the Clippers would probably gladly move him out of the way for Blake Griffin.
So how in the world could a ball hog, fat, lazy, knucklehead punk like Zach Randolph ever help the Cavs?
Matchup. Problems.
He can do something that Shaq can't. He can hit jump shots. When he's right, he can't be stopped in the post. Yes, he's a black hole. Yes, he's an asshole. Yes, he hit Ruben Patterson in the face. (I list that as an asset. Can you tell I don't care for Patterson?) Yes, Brandon Roy got him traded and got Portland reamed in the process. (And Portland was glad to do it. When you have LaMarcus Aldridge, you can do that.) Yes, the Clippers traded for him because the Knicks had absolutely no use for him once D'Antoni got there.
Guess what? D'Antoni's teams don't require post presences. The Clippers are better off with Griffin at the 4. But, as good as Griffin is athletically in the open court, and in terms of actual hustle, he is better for them.
The Cavs still need a guy who can score in the low post. If you can get 20 points out of Zach Randolph vs the Magic, you beat them easily. It's a matchup they can't matchup with. Yes, he would have to pass far better than he has out of double team's. Yes, he would have to come in with a good attitude and be committed to playing better defense.
Do you think he wouldn't mind that chance? You know, besides shaking hands, I hear LeBron James is a pretty good player. Zach Randolph will get paid by some team next year. Cleveland should seriously think about acquiring him. Like anything it's a risk, and like anything, it could go wrong. You know, like Cleveland's championship banner being raised after winning 66 games during the regular season.
Nothing is guaranteed. Just ask the Seattle SuperSonics after they managed to be the 1st seed to lose to an eigth. (And, they lost in the 1st round in 1995 too. The Sonics won 63 games in 1994, and 57 games in 1995.)
Then they changed their player mix. Check out the difference between the roster's in 1995 and 1996. You wanna know why the Sonics made it out of the 1st round? Because the Kings were one of the worst, if not the worst, 8th seeds if you factored out the Clippers improbable run to the 8th seed in 1997 (with that mind boggling total of 35 no less). And, the Kings could have done it. Because Gary Payton wasn't anywhere near himself.
They changed the mix of their players. That's all I'm saying. They didn't need an extra star level player, but they needed the right mix of role players. (And not get upset in the 1st round.)
I think the deal the Cavs should look at is Zach Randolph for Daniel Gibson and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. (I would not give up Hickson or Wallace. They can both do things that Randolph won't ever do.)
Salary Cap Note: Due to Ilgauskas' player option (that he would be foolish to ignore), he can't be traded until after the July Moratorium.
If the idea that that the Cavs can get a better player I'd like to hear it. The Cavs have role players. The whole roster is filled with role players. Role players don't get All-Stars unless they have issue's. Zach Randolph has, and I suspect always will, have warts. No question.
But if Cleveland wants to contend, and let's just ignore the whether "he will stay or go" nonsense, like Guru said yesterday, they're going to need to figure out a way to complete their team. They have outside shooting, and they have role players who play defense. (If you ignore some of the shameful flopping that Anderson Varejao does. Which I blame the NBA for. Any player will do anything to gain an advantage at any time.)
If Cleveland wants to make the opponents fear them more than they already do, they need something else. Zach Randolph is available. Is he ideal? No, if he was, he wouldn't be available.
Cleveland's biggest problems are, to my unreasonable eye, other than matchup issue's which they present for no one who is a legit championship contender, but as Adrian Wojnarowski pointed out, when Delonte West is posting up players and is probably your most reliable post up player, you got problems. The Cavs get a lot of points inside from LeBron James, and there's no doubt about that.
But, there needs to be better scoring options than Mo Williams. LeBron solves every real problem any franchise has from the get-go. (Other than the other stuff which happens.) But, to not take a risk because the fans will revolt is dumb.
Expiring contracts have so much value on the market. Like teams that want to dump players and not be stuck with the player coming back for too long. It's unwise to believe that Zydrunas Ilgauskas has much value on the market to other teams. He's very high paid, doesn't play great inside defense, and other than his offense, he doesn't bring much. But, he doesn't have a low post game. I know Cleveland fans love him, and there is a lot to like there, but at some point, being unemotional is the way to go. (This is what kills me about Kings fans with Mike Bibby. There are still some that want to swear it was a dumb trade. Fans, I swear.)
Either way, I've rambled on enough. Now, shoot me. If you even bothered to read all of this.

I’ll comment on the rest of the stuff, which is excellent, a little later, but one more thing about LeBron… you do 1000 things right and one thing wrong, and ll you hear about is that one thing. Forget “LeShot,” forget that stellar game 5, all anyone wants to talk about is the non-handshake. If Kobe id that, it’s “killer instinct.” When Jordan did stuff like that, it was “focus.” Screw that.
This is a non-issue, and I refuse to talk about it anymore after this comment.

Then he bashed LeBron for not participating in the slam dunk contest! Are you kidding me?!?! The slam dunk contest, which has been a joke for years? That’s what you’re slamming him about? And how does that mean he “makes his own rules”. Please tell me how you came to that conclusion?
I’m sorry, but anyone who writes a rant like that has zero credibility. This LeBron bashing around the league is getting too much.

And I'm not the only one
He thinks he’s better than that. He doesn’t want to do it. Do I care? Not really, no. But, this is just another small incident in a line of them. I don’t expect any Cleveland fan to care, or agree.
All it took was, LeBron’s a punk for not doing the slam dunk contest (which every star of his caliber has done and in a few cases more than that), and for the shaking hands deal.
Would I have rather mentioned it? No, probably not.
You want me to coddle your opinion? Forget it.

My point was, if you don’t care what Cleveland fans think then why are you posting on a Cleveland fan site? That doesn’t make any sense.

I know what your point was
My point was to discuss what changes COULD happen. Not the one’s I’d like to see or anything else. It was an idea. Take it or leave it. Wouldn’t make you any different than anybody else.
But, if I’m going to post an idea of Zach Randolph going to the Cavs, where am I exactly supposed to post it, on a Raptors board?
I don’t care what Cleveland (or the fans) thinks about my opinion on LeBron. I was interested to see what you had to say about everything else, which is apparently little to nothing. Your prerogative.

which every star of his caliber has done and in a few cases more than that)
Of the top 12 vote getters in the MVP voting, we have one dunk contest competitor, add more 9 guys who got 2008 votes and you’re up to a whopping 3. Stars don’t do the slam dunk contest anymore. I would say that’s being whiny, but the end of your post easily trumps it.
And it’s too bad that you don’t care what people think of your opinion, you brought it up. If you wanted to suggest a Zach Randolph trade, you could have easily done so in half the words you used. If you don’t have what it takes to get criticized for something you say, then don’t fan the flames.

My last word on the topic
So much game in a too $hort rap
Blacks cant be white and whites cant be black
Why you wanna act like someone else?
All you gotta do is just be yourself
Were all the same color underneath
Short dogs in the house youd better listen to me
Never be ashamed of what you are
Proud to be black stand tall at heart
Even though some people give you no respect
Be intelligent, when you put em in check
Cause when youre ignorant, you get treated that way
And when they throw you in jail you got nothing to say
So if you dont listen its not my fault
Ill be getting paid while youll be paying the cost
Sitting in the jailhouse running your mouth
While me and my peoples try to get out

Then why even mention it? I have no problem with you posting your thoughts on a possible trade, none at all. But why did you include a “LeBron bashing” part of your post? What does that have to do with trading for Zach Randloph or your other points?
If you’re going to come here and bash LeBron for things that aren’t true then you’re going to get backlash for it. What do you expect? Calling him a “churlish brat” and an “asshole” is inflammatory. To come here and post that stuff on a Cleveland fan site is looking for a fight, and that’s not what we want here.
We have no problem discussing possible trades for the Cavs or other moves, but just keep the LeBron bashing out of it. That is not necessary and has nothing to do with your other points.

how is he BASHING LeBron for the non-handshake
Turkmen – give me a break with this whole media anti-LeBron mindset that you apparently have. The guy farts and it gets reported on ESPN. The guy puts on a Cleveland Brown uniform for a COMMERCIAL and it gets a whole segment of Sportscenter on “what position would LeBron play in the NFL” or “Could LeBron play in the NFL?”
it’s just stupid… LeBron gets more of a reach around from the sports media than Kobe or MJ ever did, and MJ is the greatest player in NBA history. The media has to walk on eggshells around the guy otherwise he calls them out in the press conferences or he gets the media’s attention when he says Anthony Johnson’s elbow was dirty and “We dont tolerate with dirty play like that. it has no business on the court”… please man give us a god damn break.
I could care less about the dunk contest.
The media BASHES the 1991 Pistons for walking off the court and not shaking the Bulls hands and LeBron’s non-handshake gets a little bit of run in the media and you all think it’s the god damned end of the world? please. The guy isn’t a winner, he’s a sore loser. I’m fine with that, if you don’t respect your opponent. All the more sweeter to beat you the next time we play you. You don’t want to shake my hand? That’s fine with me… don’t get mad the next time you’re guarding me and I dunk on you and hang on the rim.
LeBron gets coddled MORE than any athlete I’ve ever seen, and it’s getting to be a bit absurd. What’s next? After basketball season are we going to watch the World Series and say “What position could LeBron play on the baseball field?” or “Would LeBron wear his pants up or down if he played baseball?” or if someone cures cancer it’ll be “If LeBron wasn’t playing basketball all year, would he have cured cancer sooner?”
and JuannieBoy?
Big deal on the amount of Techs in the playoffs. Just because the referees let LeBron show a lot more outward emotion than anyone else, doesn’t mean 5 techs is necessarily a horrible statistic. It’s funny when a foul is called against the Cavs and all 5 cav defenders look at the ref with their arms up in the air like how dare you make a call…

LeBron gets coddled MORE than any athlete I’ve ever seen, and it’s getting to be a bit absurd.
That is just patently untrue.
Does he get hyped a lot? Yeah. But blame ESPN for that. All LeBron does is play ridiculous basketball and conduct himself like a model citizen off the court. If they want to over report about LeBron James, then so be it. You think if ESPN was a bigger presence when Jordan was in his prime that they wouldn’t be following him around constantly, especially with him playing in Chicago?
Furthermore, I challenge you to find a superstar that’s even in LeBron’s stratosphere that is as well-spoken, accessible, and upstanding as he is. This is one, singular event, and there is no reason to let that erase all the good he’s done otherwise.

Right. I think the reason all the LeBron-bashing is coming out now is that fan are tired of seeing ESPN and other sports media constantly overhyping him. He’s obviously deserving of a great deal of praise but like everything the media does they take it too far. With the 24-hour sports networks, talk radio, and the internet, we need something to talk about all day long and so we look to make a big story about everything and make overreaching proclamations based on whatever happened yesterday. LeBron hits a game-winning shot — he’s the greatest athlete in the world!! LeBron doesn’t shake hands after the game — he’s a poor loser without class!! It’s a never-ending cycle.
And fans are sick of seeing LeBron promoted so much, sick of seeing the Kobe-LeBron commercials and hearing the debates about who’s better, so when LeBron does something dumb they lash out at him in retaliation. Just like how us Indians fans are sick of hearing about the Yankees and Red Sox so much on ESPN. So the fans are taking their shot at LeBron now.
But don’t blame LeBron that he’s being overhyped and overexposed. As Turk said, he’s been a model citizen off the court (more than you can say for many athletes) and on the court, he’s a great teammate, and he knows and appreciates the history of the game. He’s the kind of person that you want to be the face of your team or the league. Sure, he did something dumb, but fans and the media are ignoring everything else he’s done in his career and focusing on this incident.
by Buckeye Brad on Jun 2, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I personally don’t care if LeBron is on the TV for the full 60 minutes of Sportscenter. I’m not jealous of his fame or ability to score a basketball, it’s a game. How do you know the guy is a great teammate? Have you played with him, or are you going off of what the media says? That same media that is now doing what, bashing him???
HE appreciates the history of the game? So he should remember how much the media still talks about Isiah Thomas leading Detroit off the court, and how it was reported they were sore sports but somehow he’s not a sore sport? Give me a break.

Once again, the Detroit example is completely different. They walked off the court before the game was over. LeBron did not do that.
I know he’s a good teammate by watching him interact with his teammates over the year, seeing his unselfish play on the court, hearing him speak since he was in high school about putting his team first and getting him teammates involved in the game, and by the things said about him by his own teammates. I’m not going by what someone in the media is telling me, I can see things with my own eyes and ears.

c’mon Turk, you and I both know he gets coddled more than any athlete. It’s not untrue, why does David Stern have to call LeBron to ask him his side of the skipping press conference story? Stu Jackson or another one of Stern’s henchmen usually impose those fines.
Why challenge me to find a superstar in his stratosphere? This isn’t about other players, it’s about the sore sport and then the “I’m a winner” statement. WHAT HAS HE WON? He has high fived and hugged opposing players that have beaten him in the playoffs since 2004, so why is it ok to skip this year? Does he feel like he’s better than Orlando so he doesn’t need to give them dap, but Boston, Detroit and the Spurs are? Please…
If Rashard Lewis or Anthony Johnson stormed off the court after Game 6 and Cleveland won what would you have heard? Something smart, and I’ll assume something that the media finds humorous that Stu Scott can easily make into a rhyme.

Oh, so if he’s done this in the past, then why can’t you just say this was one mistake and move on? Why are you harping on this so much and calling him a “sore loser”. Why are you bashing him all over this site? Why do you care so much?
It was one mistake. He shouldn’t have done it. Let’s move on and quite making up other things to criticize him about that aren’t true.

Why challenge me to find a superstar in his stratosphere?
Because the onus is on you to prove that you argument is not absurd, not me.
He has high fived and hugged opposing players that have beaten him in the playoffs since 2004, so why is it ok to skip this year?
Because, quite simply, this is the most crushing defeat LeBron has ever dealt with. Recall the greatest “defeat” in your life… would you want to shake hands with the person that brought that defeat to you? I’m not saying Iagree with LeBron — I don’t. If it was me, I would have shaken hands. But, and this is key, I don’t know what it feels like to be LeBron James. Neither do yu. Only he does. Regardless, this is one event that is unfairly overshadowing all the great things he’s done to this point in his career.

this is an absurd, fallacious, emotional rant. virtually none of what you say is true, nor is there any reason to believe that any of your outlandish hyperbole has any semblance of a foothold in reality.
LeBron is the most marketable team sports athlete in a sports-obsessed country, in an era of 24/365 sports coverage. if you don’t like it, watch HGN. get over yourself.

Do I care that he's the most marketable sports athlete?
Is that what I even typed?
It wasn’t an emotional rant, it’s the truth. You can’t turn on sportscenter without seeing the guy on there yet he’s overanalyzed for not showing respect for the opposing team?
He gets praise for the good things he does (which there are plenty of) so why can’t he get his hand slapped or even fined for skipping a postgame press conference like all other players do?
What makes him so much more special than the other players who get fined immediately for skipping press conferences? Why is he allowed to do things that other players can’t do? That’s all I want to know… he is coddled more than any other athlete in the NBA, the proof is that there is no immediate fine and it’s taken several days for the commissioner to reach out to him… Stu Jackson levies the fines, why can’t Stu reach out to him and say “hey Bron, $25k”
by Boney on Jun 2, 2009 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who here said he shouldn’t be fined? Please tell which person here said that since you are assuming that we all believe it. We said the media and everyone is making too big a deal about this, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get a fine if other players get fined for the same thing (and I don’t think that’s true). Please stop critcizing us for things we didn’t say.

You can slap his hand and fine him. We just believe this is being blown out of proportion. You say “he should get fined like all the other players do”, but my question is what other players have been fined? And if they do, why haven’t we heard about it? Oh that’s right, the only reason people care now is because its Lebron. Let’s all realize the man is HUMAN and he made a mistake and let’s just move on to bigger more important things to talk about.
by BornInThePound on Jun 2, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
this is literally the only “truth” you posit in this ridiculous post:
The guy puts on a Cleveland Brown uniform for a COMMERCIAL and it gets a whole segment of Sportscenter on "what position would LeBron play in the NFL" or "Could LeBron play in the NFL?"
please support this:
Just because the referees let LeBron show a lot more outward emotion than anyone else
and this
Why is he allowed to do things that other players can’t do?
because from where i sit, these are made up, emotional, non-arguments intended to fit your theory. please point out to me ways in which LeBron exhibits more emotion than others, and the recent times that players have skipped media meetings and the resultant fine (or lack thereof).

The media has to walk on eggshells around the guy otherwise he calls them out in the press conferences
Huh? Please show me evidence of this.

Hello? Evidence? Or are you going to keep making accusations which you can’t support?

OK Hot Shot.
When did LeBron deserve technicals in any games during these playoffs? What you and pookeyguru seem to want to agrue is that not shaking hands after a game is on par with swinging an elbow at a players head, or calling the ref a bleep after a call doesn’t go your way. Either you are just being arguemenative or don’t have a clue.
We are not talking about what all five Cavs defenders do. That is a smokescreen for the fact that you both are LeBron haters. So why don’t you take your views to a blog where you will feel more at home? Go to Bullets Forever and you can rant about what a “crybaby” he is.

You included me in the statement
And didn’t stop there. I called LeBron a churlish baby. That’s what I said. Where did I say that equated to technicals?
And technicals are not proof of sportsmanship either.

Z-Bo
It’s no secret he has a bad contract and the Clippers need him gone in the worst way. Unloved by every team he’s ever played for, the Clips will be lucky to find a willing trade partner and might have to take back whatever junk they want to send out for Zach.
So how in the balls do they get rid of him for a large expiring contract and an (overpaid) young bench player with a little potential? Not much a Cavs fan?

Not saying it wouldn't work
But I don’t agree that would get you a better result than a Shaq trade. Maybe they trade Z, and he asks for a buyout from LA and comes back.
It would be pretty weird to see the clips trot out a frontcourt rotation of Griffin, Camby, Kaman, and Ilgauskas
