2009 NBA Draft - Cavs select Eyenga and Green

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected guard/forward Christian Eyenga with the 30th overall pick and guard/forward Danny Green with the 46th overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft.

"Christian is very athletic and shoots the ball very well. He has the potential to be a good NBA player. We are excited to work with him, to see his development and help him grow as a player and a person," Ferry said. "Danny Green is a good basketball player and competitor. He knows how to win."

Eyenga, 20, played in 25 games this season with CB Prat Juventud of Spain, averaging 13.3 points on .488 shooting, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 30.3 minutes per game. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder from the Republic of Congo scored in double figures in 18 of their 25 games and topped the 20-point mark on two occasions. Eyenga also appeared in four Euroleague games with DKV Joventut Badalona, scoring three points in 16 minutes.

Green played all four seasons at North Carolina, playing in more games (145) and winning more games (123) than any Tar Heel in history. As a senior, the 6-foot-6, 210-pound guard/forward averaged 13.1 points on .471 shooting, including shooting .418 (77-184) from three-point range, 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks in 38 games (all starts) as North Carolina won the 2009 NCAA Championship. He was named to the ACC All-Defensive Team, the All-ACC Third Team and the NCAA South Regional Tournament Team. The 22-year-old finished his college career as the only player in ACC history to tally at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists, 150 three-pointers, 150 blocks and 150 steals and is the only player in North Carolina history to record 100 or more blocked shots and three-point field goals.

According to John Hollinger’s (of ESPN) college prospect draft rankings (he uses some sort of mathematical formula), Green was the 8th best prospect, just below Dejuan Blair.

There’s that at least.

by Cols714 on Jun 26, 2009 9:49 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, I saw that too. That’s a good sign. I think Green can become a solid bench player, maybe another Boobie (rookie year version).

by Buckeye Brad on Jun 26, 2009 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I was actually surprised they didn’t take Blair at the end of the 1st round.

by Cols714 on Jun 26, 2009 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Also Hollinger has a column out today and he calls Danny Green the best fit and the 2nd best steal of the draft (behind Blair). I’m warming up to this draft.

Danny Green is the kind of guy a championship team needs in the draft

there isn’t much value that late in the round but getting a college senior who is very good on defense, has some length and can shoot from the outside can be a huge addition coming off the bench.

Plus, maybe he can T-bag someone like he did Greg Paulas.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 26, 2009 10:00 AM CDT reply actions

we can only hope he dose that to someone on the magic, or Boston

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m thinking after this first round draft (Eyenga won’t be in A Cavs uniform for a few years at least), but I’m happy to see Danny Green (a steal)…I’m thinking they might not be done in free agency…and I hope they’re not. Shaq is a MAJOR upgrade, but I think we need more to get it done…and we really need to take our shot this coming year…

by johnnyphoenix on Jun 26, 2009 12:03 PM CDT reply actions

they say we are planing to offer sheed Wallace a contract in free agency we can only offer Mid level so hopefully he excepts

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I read a news report somewhere that statedt that the Cavs are being slightly mocked now for their draft, but if their picks had been reversed they would have been praised. But by reversing the order, they may have saved a significant amount of cash.

by gahnki on Jun 26, 2009 12:17 PM CDT reply actions

yeah this was a cash move and wasn’t really a starter we were going to get here so save the money and get one in F/A

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

i’m just seeing that rubio is staying in spain. this is unexpected, right? sounds like an attempt to force the wolves to move him out…we heard the knicks were after him last night, didn’t we?

by DontCallMeJoey on Jun 26, 2009 12:29 PM CDT reply actions

yeah thats what I heard I wouldn’t want to compete with another rookie pg ether if I was him

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

He did a chat last night where he said how excited he was to be coming to America. His agents obviously got to him overnight.

by gahnki on Jun 26, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he doesn’t want to compete with Flynn for playing time. He wasn’t going to say that in a chat.

by Buckeye Brad on Jun 26, 2009 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

its a bad starting point for a rookie

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Rubio is better than Flynn. I don’t think he wants to play in Minnesota

by Roger Dorn on Jun 26, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

well he is a better passer buy flynn is stronger and I figure to be a better scorer, and you are probably right , honestly how many rookie get to chose where they go. A lot of these guys can’t be happy this was a rebuilding year. So since he’s a rookie someone need’s to tell him to shut up yes you played pro in Europe but your in America Now take your chance and like it till you prove yourself.

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Rubio is better than Flynn

that is certainly not a lock. flynn’s a much better scorer, and a much better defender.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jun 26, 2009 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Scouting reports I’ve read would strongly disagree with that last comment. Rubio is supposed to be an excellent defender, while Flynn’s defense has been questioned some, and he played in a 2-3 zone, not a pro-style defense.

by 7foot3 on Jun 26, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Rubio played excellent D against Kobe in the Olympics which is what I am basing my opinion on. Flynn played the 2-3 zone in college which is very difficult to transition from college to the pros. Outside Melo, how many Cuse players have had good NBA careers?

by Roger Dorn on Jun 26, 2009 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Flynn is a much better leader and IMO a tougher player.

by BradyQuinnisBeast on Jul 2, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m sorry…but I just have a feeling Rubio is gonna be another huge European bust. I do NOT see what all the hype is about. Plus, I saw on ESPN that he’s thinking of returning to Europe to play because he doesn’t want to play for the small market Wolves and wants a deal to be done that sends him to New York. I think thats BULLSHIT. You want to play in the NBA so bad, you get drafted by a team thats willing to take a chance on you and pay you to play with the best in the world, and now you gonna cry about a small market NBA team?!? I wouldn’t want to be on a team with a guy like that.

by johnnyphoenix on Jun 26, 2009 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think it’s about the small-market team, I think it’s because the T-Wolves also drafted Johnny Flynn who also plays point guard. The article I read said he would have had no problem playing in Sacramento had they drafted him.

Also, even if that was true, he’s not the first foreign player to say he didn’t want to play for a certain team. Yi Jianlin said he wasn’t going to play for Milwaukee when they drafted him (although he finally did), just for one example, and I’ve heard that from other players too. So it’s nothing exclusive to Rubio.

Did you see him play against the USA in the Olympics? He held his own against the best players in the NBA as a 17-year-old; that’s what all the hype is about. Why do you think he’s going to be a bust (other than the fact that he’s European, which isn’t a good reason)?

by Buckeye Brad on Jun 27, 2009 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah smart by the wolves to draft 2 there. Now they can dangle Rubio to the highest bidder…see whats out there…

by johnnyphoenix on Jun 27, 2009 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Not only that, but Rubio was playing with an injured hand and still played the best D on Kobe out of anyone in the entire Olympics. It was impressive. I dare anyone to find a better passer coming from Europe at this stage in their life. Tony Parker is the only possible answer, and he wasn’t this far along at this point

by Roger Dorn on Jun 28, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

i think you’ll remember that kobe rarely took it upon himself to be the offensive cog of the US team in the olympics, except in a couple of games (i believe spain was one) when it came down to crunch time. so, while i’m sure you’re right that rubio played some good d on kobe, i’d discount it based upon the fact that kobe wasn’t looking for his o quite as much. though, i will say, i clearly don’t remember rubio’s d against kobe as well as you do.

also, i’m not sure that flashy passing translates quite as well into the nba. especially when he does nothing else…he shot like 26% in the olympics, he doesn’t rebound (which is where a flashy passer like j. kidd makes a big difference), and i guess i’d say it makes sense to hold judgement until he’s actually played defense in the league. so, i’m massively skeptical at this point.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jun 28, 2009 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I go beyond calling him a flashy passer. He gets the ball to the open man

by Roger Dorn on Jun 29, 2009 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

okay I know this is off subject but the magic lost Hedo wooot wooot

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 4:11 PM CDT reply actions

Losing Hedo will really hurt them against us

because we couldn’t match up with Hedo and Lewis. Delonte West can surely take care of Vince. That move was made to match up against the Lakers but it will not work because they will not be back in the finals.

I know its awesome hedo said he wont resign, and then the don’t really have the money ether and plus raffer is gone too so magic got worse with that vince trade

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe, but Howard is young and improving and they will get Jameer Nelson back who is also young and improving. I think the Magic have a decent chance at being better than they were last year, even with Carter being a little worse than Turkoglu.

by Cols714 on Jun 26, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I just keep checking this but they will be better inside but they also lost Lee and that’s a lot of out side shooting so it may even out but a different kinda game.

by tarley on Jun 26, 2009 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

If they kept Hedo…Good move. They lose Hedo…Bad move.

Hedo did alot more for that offense than just hit shots. His assists really aided Howard, and he pretty much ran that offense. Vince won’t do that…never has for any team. He might be a good addition as an individual player, but he has NEVER made the players around him better. Never. Knee jerk reaction to Shaq deal, and they’re gonna pay for it. Lee and Hedo gone. HUGE mistake.

by johnnyphoenix on Jun 26, 2009 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think the Carter trade was a reaction to the Shaq deal at all. I think they were worried about losing Hedo to free agency and wanted to find another scorer to replace him

by Buckeye Brad on Jun 27, 2009 9:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it was both, actually. Losing Hedo and Lee and Alston…man, i just don’t like the looks of that…well, as a cavs fan….actually I do very much. What a difference between what Cavs lost for Shaq…

by johnnyphoenix on Jun 27, 2009 6:13 PM CDT reply actions

WOW…noticing ALOT of hate for Shaq and the Cavs….We’ll see.
