RUMOR ALERT - Leon Powe to Cleveland?

CelticsBlog, the best Boston Celtics site on the planet, had an interesting rumor to pass along this morning - Leon Powe could be close to accepting a deal with the Cavs.  Powe, whose energy and passion have helped him overcome numerous injuries in his career, is a free agent and coming off yet another surgery after suffering a knee injury during the Playoffs.

Per CB -

I'm told by another source (these things are just coming out of the woodwork these days) that Leon Powe is considering an offer from Cleveland.  Apparently Dallas has an offer to him as well, but with Drew Gooden signing he might be leaning towards taking the Cavs offer.  He still has not received an offer from Boston.

A note on all these rumors.  I'm not talking to agents and players myself.  I'm getting them from people that I think are credible but you can never be sure about who they are getting them from and so on.  This is the nature of rumors so please always take with a grain of salt.

Personally, I have always liked Powe and he would be a solid addition, if he could come back close to full strength.

Powe would definitely be a nice addition to our bench. He may not be back from his injury until February but that would give him enough time to get in the rotation before the playoffs. He would provide great insurance in case Hickson and/or Jackson don’t develop as solid backups.

Leon will come back to full strenth. That is just the kind of tough player that he is. He was playing hurt in the first place and after he tore his ACL, he continued to play for 3 minutes because his team needed him. You just don’t see that kind of toughness and grit in players these days. If Danny let’s him go to another team, it will be the biggest blunder of his GM career.

He can be tough all he wants, but he’s got some pretty creaky knees right now. Grit takes a backseat to being able to get on the court and play efficiently. Not wanting to spend money on a bench player with iffy-at-best health isn’t much of a blunder. There certainly are a lot worse things he could do.

That’s a bit of an overstatement. You’re talking about Leon Powe not Kobe or LeBron.

lol, ya think?

But its a testament to how likable powe is, and he has alot of celtics fans heart to the point they make ridicoulous statemetns like not signing a guy with a 3rd ACL injury is a bad GM move…lol!!!! Danny Ainge was the one who gave powe his shot after the first 2!!!!! get a clue

The same dude who drafted Gerald Green in the first round? Really?

Add Powe

and this team is stacked. It also would allow Jackson and J.J more time to grow their games in situations which often times puts young player in position to fail. Jackson and J.J will be good players in the future but in the chase for a championship players often fail to grow as players because they are limited in what they do during a game because of team strategies leading to a less developed player.

This is way the Spurs often time send their young players over seas because they will not be able to really play for the Spurs. Minutes and the teams lack of ability to let the player make mistakes and grow from them is why players like Shannon Brown and Jason Kapono failed here but have played well else where. The Cavs did not fail to develop them because of a lack of effort but a lack of playing time and ability to let them learn from mistakes.

so you're saying

let the young guys get minutes to develop but sign powe to make sure they don’t have to play because they’re not ready.

i completely agree!

It’s really hard to let Leon Powe go. I hope he lands in another team.

If we can get him on the cheap...

why the hell not? He’s def worth a min contract and some medical bills, if he can be had for that.
