Cavs add two to compete for one spot

Former Golden State Warriors F Rob Kurz has accepted an offer from the Cavaliers to come to Training Camp and compete for the final roster spot.  Kurz reportedly agreed to a non-guaranteed contract.

Kurz took the offer after F Joe Smith, who has had two tours of duty with the team, decided to take the veteran minimum and sign with the Atlanta Hawks.  That opened the door for Kurz to battle for the last roster spot with C Darryl Watkins.  2nd Round draft pick Danny Green is expected to have the other roster spot currently available.

The Cavaliers 15 man roster now shapes up this way, with Kurz the favorite to lock down a spot -

C - Shaquille O'Neal, Zydrunas Ilgauskas
PF - Anderson Varejao, J.J. Hickson, Darnell Jackson, Leon Powe, Rob Kurz
SF - LeBron James, Jamario Moon, Jawad Williams
SG - Delonte West, Anthony Parker, Danny Green
PG - Mo Williams, Daniel Gibson

Little Surprised

I thought Joe Smith would accept a Cav offer. I hope Kurz works out ok.

I really

don’t think Joe Smith liked it here. He only came back last year because he basically hated the Celtics and no one else was offering him a good deal.

I think LeBron would tell you different about Joe Smith’s feelings about being here. At least that’s the way it seemed when we picked him up last season.

Lebron

is of course going to tell you that. The King wouldn’t allow a player to really say they didn’t want to play with the him. Lebron’s fake value is that he is a good teammate and that everyone loves him but the truth isn’t so black and white.

I love how you pretend that you know all this stuff that nobody else knows. Please tell us all the “truth” about LeBron, o wise one.

E5 should team up with Isis from WFNY. Then we could all know everything about everything.

Insurance

I am not the biggest of fans but you have to ask yourself is he better then Sasha? Answer is clearly yes because he is more consistent and will actually play defense. Also this decision wasn’t made in a vacuum the team is very conscious of adding to the future payroll. Sure they could have signed better players but the future contract cost was prohibitive. They also could have signed lesser player but what is the point to that. I like the general direction of the front office. Christian Eyenga will be replacing Anthony Parker in the near future. Ferry is a much wiser GM then we give him credit for and is more detailed and organized then the other GM’s in Cleveland. Ferry has a multiple plans and understand the future cap situations and how to properly evaluate players current and future value and how best to trade his assets.

Think about the last few deals Ferry has made

Gooden, Hughes and Shannon Brown
For
Ben Wallace, Delonte West and Joe Smith
Result Win

Then
Joe Smith and Damon Jones
For
Mo Williams
Result Win

Then
Wallace and Sasha P
For
Shaq
Huge Win

All these deals have made the current and future Cavs better by getting rid of bad players/poor contracts
for impact players who are young and or going to help this team win a Championship.

My concern is that Parker will get playing time and a roster spot

over Danny Green. Green is a great defender, something we don’t have on the perimeter outside of the undersized West and maybe Lebron.

Not playing defense on the perimeter is what lost us the series vs Orlando.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 16, 2009 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

The best player

gets the most PT. That said Brown is very slow to make some changes and favors veterans over rookies at the determent to the team. His lack of changes cost the Cavs the series vs Orlando. Ferry has learned to work with his coach but Brown is by far and away one of the most stubborn coaches in the NBA and he has cost the Cavs at least two playoff Series. (Boston and Orlando) If the Cavs don’t win it all Brown is gone because Ferry has given him all the options and players he needs to compete against all the championship teams. The Cavs failures will be Browns problems.

Dude even with a healthy KG as long as we have home-court advantage we will kick Boston’s ass

I'm an idiot with a stupid signature.

by Indians95 on Aug 16, 2009 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

You call him stubborn

I call it like it is: Brown is NOT a good coach! He is not a championship winning coach! The guy tried nothing new in the Orlando series. He admitted that their offensive plan was to give the ball to Lebron, and tell him to “go get it for us big fella” as he went 1 on 5. This will NEVER win a ring. Would Phil Jackson do that with Kobe, regardless of the situation? Even during the 2006 season, Phil never told Kobe to go 1 on 5. And Kobe was playing with the worst starting line up, exluding himself, that has ever played in the NBA, lol. Seriously, 3 of the starters don’t even play in the NBA anymore.

The Cavs need a new coach. Lebron’s prime is right now. His athleticism will actually start to drop off over the next 3 years or so. Lebron will need to morph his game as Kobe/MJ did, from one of athleticism to one of skill. I doubt that the Cavs can will a ring as long as Coach Brown is there.

Can I ask what provoked this? Did I miss something? Parker is a pretty good player. I will say that he is on the decline, and 34 year old 2-guards who have likely lost a step could take a serious fall, so I am concerned, but I’d say he’s worthy of a bench spot over Green so far.

by 7foot3 on Aug 17, 2009 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Basically...

If you compact all of those trades together you get…

Drew Gooden
Larry Hughes
Shannon Brown
Damon Jones
Sasha Palvovic

FOR

Delonte West
Mo Williams
SHAQ

overall that’s an improvement I’d say.

by King Tony on Aug 16, 2009 7:45 PM CDT reply actions

i think varejao is underrated. the cavs were needing another big man, and they’re about to have size galore. when kobe wanted to play team ball, he and shaq were unstoppable. lebron loves passing the ball. i think they’ll win a championship this year, any doubters?

by bozohead on Aug 17, 2009 2:27 AM CDT reply actions

Kurz is actually better than Varejao

You should start the movement to embrace him and get him in the lineup right now

by warriorsvictim on Aug 17, 2009 1:06 PM CDT reply actions

Varejao is a better basketball player than Kurz, maybe Kurz is a better dominoes player, but at the game of basketball, Varejao is the better player.

by hans on Aug 20, 2009 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I fully disagree

Kurz is more versatile. Varejao will play more but that doesn’t make him better. Varejao is just better at doing the things he does but from a pure physical stand point Kurz is 10 times better. Kurz is so inconsistent and needs to refine his game but he is a better player overall.

What in the hell does that mean? Varejao is better at doing the things he does? Huh??

by Buckeye Brad on Aug 20, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Varejao

is a limited player. He does a good job of doing what he does well and avoiding things he doesn’t do well. Kurz has more potential but because he has had limited PT and poor coaching in the NBA he isn’t fully developed. Varejao is as good as he will ever be.

by E5 on Aug 20, 2009 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

There are many, many, many players who had “potential” that never did anything in the NBA. If Kurz has so much potential, why aren’t other teams falling over each other to sign him?

by Buckeye Brad on Aug 20, 2009 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

dude…you are out of your freaking mind. seriously, like, embarrassing yourself.

rob kurz stinks. anderson varejao starts. end of discussion.
