Chris Sheridan Chat on ESPN
Like I said earlier, Mike, if they can upgrade Boobie and use Wally/Lorenzen to make the money work, I think they'll do something. I'd say a Gibson trade is 5 times more likely than a Z trade. Also, I know Jamario Moon is out 3 weeks, but it still sort of feels like I'm watching a showcase every time I see Jawad Williams on the floor. If they combo Jawad, Gibson and Wally, they could get a nice piece back. If they added Hickson to that threesome, I'd bet they could get David West.

Since when do we still have Wally and Wright on the roster?

The Cavs own their 'Bird Rights'
So they can use either in a sign&trade scenario, similar to the way Dallas used Keith Van Horn to get Jason Kidd

WHY
would Ferry want to give up
1) one of the better 3 point shooters in the league [ this year]
2) two potential stars in the making in JJ and Jawad (combined salary under 2.5M) for 9M in salary (8.2M next year) that may only be here for this season and next
In order for this to work, Wally would have to agree to about a 3-4M deal….and probably only for one year from a NOH perspective) does anyone think that will happen?
I see the incredible upside in production for this year and next, but what about the disruption in “team chemistry” that might occur as happened when Wally, Delonte, et al. arrived in mid season?
The Cavs are staring the best record in the league squarely in the eyes while trying only to get all of their parts to mesh…I’m a firm believer in “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it”…and what the Cavs have right now is a very long way from being broken

I think if you are Ferry and that deal is on the table you take it without blinking.
Going into this season priority #1 was to increase the size of the front court, this happened by trading away nothing for a slightly over the hill (but still arguably one of the most dominant players of the last decade) Shaq. With this trade the Cavs would be getting an athletic 6’9" player in his prime that has played in two All-Star games, to replace a project player (that over the last several weeks has shown he still has a lot of growing to do) and a 3-point specialist that has only recaptured his rookie season form this year.
If I’m LeBron, and I want to see that the organization is willing to go and make the team better immediately with a move like this, I’m ecstatic. Yes, West may need convincing to stay in Cleveland when his contract is up, but it would be a lot easier than trying to lure him to Cleveland in free agency.
Wally would absolutely agree to a free payday. A company says we want to pay you and you don’t have to come to work. Who would say no to that?
I understand Jawad has had a couple nice games, we don’t need to go falling in love with a player that will more likely be cut that get playing time as soon as Powe is off the disabled list. Why not try to package him to a team where he would get a chance to play than outright cutting him to fend for himself.
The Cavs do have the best record in the league and much of that is to do with chemistry. I don’t think in David West you would be bringing in a social pariah that would tear the locker room in twain.
Get it done Ferry.

The part about “team chemistry” had nothing to do with locker room influence…only with how well and how quickly would he be able to fit in on the floor…a move like this at mid-season only makes a “team better immediately” if the transition is near seamless…. one other thing to consider…
This would be at most a five year investment as he turns 30 this year…I would certainly NOT be in favor of re-signing/extending him for more than three years after next year….I’d love to have this kind of explosive scorer (which Jawad may develop into, and we know Gibson is capable of) on the Cavs, but to give up three players in their mid twenties whose respective potential is just starting to be realized for a guy who has 3-5 productive years left is insane…
If the Cavs start trading away the future for today, they will soon find themselves being referred to as an “old team”…
The only way I see this happening is if LeBron says “do it” since all of the possibly departing players are close to him and have been unconditionally supported by him in the past…I doubt LeBron is going anywhere after this year, and if that is the only reason for trading for this guy (to impress LeBron) then it’s plain not worth it….If he leaves, I for one, want to see a young competitive team with future potential playing in Cleveland…NOT a bunch of guys heading into the twilight of their careers

Brian Windhorst was asked this question in a recent podcast, he seemed skeptical that we would be able to do a trade with Wally, because Wally has taken a television job (i believe CBS?) doing college basketball analysis, and the NBA would require that if he signs a contract that he actually acts in good faith and participates (i.e. attends games) and of course this may interfere with his actualy career change to being on T.V. Basically Windhorst is saying that the NBA knows that this loophole exists (the Van Horn thing) and will likely close the loop hole by the next collective bargaining agreement, along with the whole “trading a player to another team, other team cuts player, player returns to original team in 30 days” thing, he thinks that loophole is going to be closed as well.
I think there’s enough room in this to still make it happen, I mean Wally has the incentive of getting a ton of money (whatever makes up the difference in any potential trade) for basically doing nothing, and if he is able to work something out around this with his current employer, than I still see him being willing to “jump through whatever hoops” he has to. I don’t see why the team that trades for him won’t just do a buy-out immediately with Wally if the NBA is going to make a big deal about him not participating, and then like any other buy-out he can be free to pursue what ever he wishes (i.e. T.V. analysis).
I certainly perfer using Wally’s sign-and-trade contract over Z’s or Shaq’s at this point, and coupling him with Gibson or Hickson would be acceptable.
Also Windhorst said that the Pacers were asking for the moon for Troy Murphy, like multiple draft picks, and prospect players (I’m guessing Hickson and maybe more) and then whatever contract finishes out the match. So he stated until they become more reasonable, no deal with them would be happening soon. Jamison still looks like the most likely target, but there is so much confusion on what’s going on with Agent Zero’s contract that nobody is going to be moved until they know a bit more regarding a potential voiding of the remainder of his contract due to felony charges.
