Plain Dealer reporting NBA will NOT block Ilgauskas' return to Cavaliers

This just in from the Plain Dealer's Mary Schmitt Boyer, who is covering the Cavs today and tomorrow for the vacationing Brian Windhorst (he's spending a day or two in Florida).

An NBA source denied a report that the league would prevent Zydrunas Ilgauskas from returning to the Cavaliers. A high ranking source who requested anonymity said there was no truth to a report from the Los Angeles Times claiming that the league would try to prevent Ilgauskas' return to Cleveland if and/or when he is bought out by the Washington Wizards because the deal was previously agreed upon by the teams. There is no evidence of any such agreement. Ilgauskas' agent Herb Rudoy said on Monday that there was no previous arrangement. Ilgauskas was sent to Washington on Wednesday as part of the three-team deal that brought Antawn Jamison to Cleveland.

That is indeed good news.

Now the only part left is for Washington to waive Zydrunas.  Unfortunately for us, they have to do it this week.  If Z isn't signed before March 1st, he cannot play in the playoffs with the Cavs.  That is the deadline for rosters.

They probably wont wait

If he’s on their roster on March 1st, they have to pay the full remainder of the salary, which will put them over the cap.

Your hating will not spill over into the Wizards’ financial desires

Oh so then there’s like a really good chance of them waiving him by then?

They still save money by waiving him, and since they are no longer even close to contending, and are only rebuilding, cutting Z is still the smartest move for them, despite already being under the luxury tax. Opps, run on sentence.

It’s still entirely up to them of course.

I see

Thank you for making this clearer to me.

I thought a player had to wait 30 days before resigning with the team that traded him? Wouldn’t that mean that Z can’t sign with us before the 1st?

Is this the whale section?

Good question

The player would have to sit for 30 days, but he can sign at any time.

So Z can sign and be on the roster….but not be permitted to play for the required 30 days.

30 days from trade, I believe is what Windy said.

Or in other words, what Jeff said.

Thanks

But I got that knowledge from the aforementioned beat writer, Windy.

So the credit goes full-circle!

They should just clean this loophole up in the offseason

So it’s fair to everyone.

Unfortunately, the league and players have bigger issues to worry about than this once the season is done.

It is fair to everyone. Any team can trade somebody away and then sign them back if the other team cuts them. If they choose not to, that’s their own problem.

You're right, it's fair because everyone can do it

But if they’re going to cut it off, they should do it at the end of the season.

The other team usually cuts the player because it’s a pre-arranged deal, so that loophole should be closed in principle, as it’s a way around the cap rules. Teams are not really “free” to sign the cut player, as the player would refuse to play for that team.

Correct, free to offer a contract too said player though. I recall Cleveland being on the other side of this last season (or was it the year before) when Detroit traded Antonio McDyess away, he was cut by the team he was traded too, Cleveland offered him more money, but he chose to wait out the thirty days and sign with Detroit. But, that’s within the players choice as he is a free agent once bought out. Players don’t always go back to their original teams, and in fact most of them sign on with contending teams (Marbury to Boston, Joe Smith to the Cavs last year, etc). I think they’ll have to do away with buyouts all together.
