Offseason Needs to Address
Obviously its kind of early for this, but I like to talk about the offseason.
1) Get another superstar...
I feel for this team to succeed the way they should with LeBron James at the helm that he will need another solid player. A player that I feel will be atainable this offseason will be Chris Paul. That's right, Chris Paul. CP3, baby. The reason that I feel this way is that the Hornets are looking to dump salary and we may be able to acquire him. He is almost expendable with how Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton have developed into pretty good players as rookies. Maybe if we send them Daniel Gibson, Anthony Parker and Big Z (sign-and-trade) with the 2011 1st Round draft pick, then it could happen. Two of those would be expiring contracts.
2) Get another coach...
Mike Brown is such a joke. He is more like a cheerleader than anything else. LeBron is the coach of this team just like Kobe is in L.A. I haven't heard Brown coach a single player. LeBron develops on-court talent more than Mike Brown ever could. LeBron is pulling the strings on the puppet that is Mike Brown and Danny Ferry for that matter. I love Danny Ferry though. The smartest thing he ever did was listen to what his star player wants on this team. The Amar'e thing still stings a little bit though. Jamison obviously was not the answer to a more versatile line-up. He could have been but Mike Brown can't rotate a decent line-up to save his life. Or his job for that matter.
Can we not get a Jeff Van Gundy or a Larry Brown? These guys are actual coaches.
3) Dump Mo Williams
I think it is at least worth a shot. The lack of defensive prowess is shining in the series with Boston. We could use him to find a productive post player at Center. What if we pulled off a deal to send Mo WIlliams, Antawn Jamison and the 1st Round pick in the 2012 draft and the 2nd Round pick in the 2011 draft for Chris Bosh (sign-and trade) & Marcus Banks. Or maybe even send him to New York where they don't play defense and at least get David Lee out of it. I'd rather have Chris Bosh though.
4) LeBron has to opt out of his contract...
As crazy as it sounds, it can needs to happen. If he does opt out of his contract, then we would still maintain the Bird Rights over him. We can re-sign after opening up cap space to sign some more talent. There is the chance that he can leave, but I don't think he will if Ferry is proactive about acquiring some decent to great talent. You've got to play the salary cap game if you want to win.
My line-up after those two deals if Danny Ferry could pull them off....
PG - Chris Paul / Sebastian Telfair / Marcus Banks
SG - Delonte West / Jamario Moon
SF - LeBron James / Jawad Williams / Danny Green
PF - Chris Bosh / J.J. Hickson / Leon Powe
C - Anderson Varejao / Sasha Kaun
Coach - Jeff Van Gundy
Some of this seems a little farfetched, but I've seen crazier things happen. This line-up is totally dangerous to any other team in the NBA. I'm just trying to generate some talk. Feedback?

off season needs
I agree with alot you say. Mo is not consistant enough on offense & lacking on defense. Another thing i just cant get is why Brown is playing Parker more than he’s played all season. He wouldnt be a starter on any team, let alone a contending team. His defense is terrible, to slow & only wants to shoot 3pt shoots. But alot of that is Browns fault cuz he doesnt know how to run a offense. West & Moon shud be getting majority of playing time, not Parker. Also Andy’s time has been almost cut in half & need him on the floor for defense & create energy as he always does. If Browns choices arent doing it, DAH, put someone else in. Hell Browns so busy screaming & running back & forth instead of thinking what needs changed. Shaq can helpbut he’s to slow on defense & why dont they let their other big men post up. They wont even try it ! If they want Lebron to stay they need better point guard & #2guard too.

wait wait wait
as a knicks fan, your sending mo williams to the knicks because he doesn’t play defense, for David Lee… because he also doesn’t play defense….?
with your intentions, you do that trade and you would be SEVERELY disappointed.
The Cavs do not get cap space if James opts out. He is still “on the books” according to cap rules until they relinquish the right to go over the cap to re-sign him. This is why the Knicks can’t keep David Lee. They have to clear the space to sign two max contracts, and if they they sign those max contracts, there is no space for Lee.
yeah trade was a bad choice of words
my main point was David Lee and defense are not congruous concepts.
Chris Paul will not be traded for just cap space.
To think otherwise is asinine. He is arguably a top5 player in the league. No matter how good Collison and Thornton are right now, that franchise will not trade CP3 a year before their terrible contracts come off their books.
good points
All of them are correct. Here are my disputes, however. CP3 won’t be traded by the Hornets, just yet, for cap space. They will more look to move Peja for space or another young, healtheir piece to try one more run. If then they fall short again, I expect CP3 to be a trade block topic. But another superstar is a huge need, someone with a bit of an alpha-dog in them.
Getting a new coach I think is paramount. Brown has been Lebron’s coach his entire time in Cleveland, and this whole college-atmosphere has to change. Time to bring in a big gun. However, I find it interesting that you think Kobe does all of the coaching in LA, who has the all-time greatest NBA coach in history on his sidelines. Even more ironic because Chris Broussard (definitely a homer, and probably an idiot) is howling for Phil Jackson for $13 million in Cleveland next season to ensure Lebron returns.
Getting rid of Mo Williams is a good move, but what next? You go back to Delonte West at PG? He’s the reason you brought Mo over in the first place. And Gibson is not a starter by any stretch of the mind. And while a S&T for Bosh is possible, Toronto has to agree. While some people seem to think a team will agree to any S&T to avoid losing a star for nothing, why would they take back two players who are not better than the players they already have? They already have Jarret Jack and Jose Calderon at PG, and Hedo and Barganni at the forwards.
I will say this about the current roster. It’s interesting that Shaq was the only one who “seemed” to produce, but it was mostly on offense, after a dumpoff pass, with no defense. Shaq brings almost nothing on defense or the boards anymore (his block was sweet. however).
I believe that the pressure on Lebron’s crew is what is sinking Cleveland. The pressure of “If we lose, if we don’t win a championship this year, Lebron may leave.”
"The problem actually is that PER is a extra-long, double high wagon load of horse crap." - timbo (7/3/09)
Brown has been Lebron’s coach his entire time in Cleveland
Except for when Paul Silas was, and Bendon Malone (interim after Silas got the ax). Not trying to rip on you, just make a clarification.

Ah, yes, the old “let’s trade all of our bad players for everyone else’s good players” suggestion that we often hear from fans. Why doesn’t Danny Ferry every think of great ideas like this?

I know, what an idiot Ferry is. If I were GM, my lineup would be:
1- Deron Williams
2 – D-Wade
3 – Durant (LeBron comes off the bench because he has no fire or passion after game 5)
4 – Bosh
5 – Howard
Any idiot GM could make this work under the cap. What’s Ferry’s problem?!

What?? Deron Wiliams is a scrub. He should be our backup for CP3 when CP3 is inevitably injured.
Get with it, Danny.

hornets fan here
im sorry to disappoint but CP3 is not going anywhere. If you’re reading the news, the ownership transfer is being finalized between Chouest and Shinn. That means we have a billionaire owner. thats right. so its highly probable that we won’t be thinking too much of the luxury tax compared to previous years :( sorry but i think, the best possible person you could get is get Iggy. :P just saying :) He may not be a “superstar” but i think all james needs is someone who can carry the load for him when he’s not otherworldly. and iggy has carried a team(somewhat). so there :p
So funny
the Cavaliers are just fine, the effort was not there this series and Boston played great! do not take anything away from the Celtics and do not even try to start the “revamping” of the Cavaliers…the team is fine, Boston just out-played us for crying out loud.
Hang tough people, lot’s to be hopeful for.

Remember guys, Delonte will more than likely be missing for a good portion of next season, if not all of it. He’ll either be suspended or jailed, or both. Dumping Mo is not an option. Shaq is probably gone, unless he gives us a $19 mil discount, Z is probably gone unless he gives us a hometown discount and we get a new coach. Also, I’m pretty sure the Cavs cannot trade their 1st rounder for 2011 since they traded the 2010 1st rounder, NBA doesn’t allow that I think(someone back me up.) Get a PG and some bigs, a new coach, oh, and resign some guy named LeBron.
All the fantasy wishes are great, but Jeff Van Gundy? Seriously? Great. He’s an announcer and says great ideas on the tv, but the guy never won his division with the Knicks or Houston. So he got to the finals one year…he lost…so did Mike Brown. If you’re going the the Chris Bosh, CP3, LBJ fantasy why not bring along Phil Jackson or Pat Riley, or bring back Lenny Wilkens for old time sake.
With this fantasy line-up just happening, some crazy things could happen...
Maybe we could reincarnate Red Auerbach.
omg
Lenny Wilkens would be so awesome for this Cavs team.
"minds sharpens minds, like steel sharpens steel"
LeBron is Karl Malone looking for his John Stockton. So get him a couple of guys who can spearhead the fast break, and then surround him with guys who can play defense, rebound, and run. Get rid of the million short scoring guards they now have who are too small to defend and rebound. Defense and rebounding win championships, and run like greyhounds on offense…
Defense, rebound run?
Sounds like LeBron should just join the Bulls if he wants that… ;) With Rose and Noah.
my two cents on the matter
what you guys need is a true pass first point guard, Lebron should not be the one handling the ball and making plays, someone should start the play and lebron should be the one to finish it, your offense is too stagnant if he is the one handling the ball, and i hardly see any pick and roll or screens or any kind of switching to get favorable match ups and the four other guys are well, i can say witnesses to lebron going 1 on 5. and for the record im a celtic fan and that’s just my two cents on the matter
last year's evaluation stands.
i stand by what i said last year—cleveland needs a couple more pieces around lebron.
they have a deep bench, good. they have role players, good. however, those role players disappear during the playoffs. i didnt like last year that danny ferry surrounded lebron with a bunch of scrubs and B players (a lot of them are B+ and C) and it showed during the playoffs. shaq’s addition was okay with me—IF you knew how to play with him. unfortunately, as it showed during the all-star game, kobe is the only one who’s figured it out (and to a certain extent, wade). too bad kobe wouldnt tell lebron the secret.
so it stands that cleveland needs two things:
1. a lock-down defender: battier, raja bell, t. prince, hinrich, etc…
- defending the best player on the opposing team need not be lebron’s job; he expends too much energy doing help-defense, running after fastbreaks for blocks, and roaming the perimeter for steals and passing lane interceptions. someone has to do that. this player must also be able to shoot the 3 when lebron draws attention.
2. a reliable post player: stoudamire, bosh, brand, j. oneil, or get someone like blake griffin (his value no doubt has gone down with the injuries; same with greg oden).
alternatively, cleveland could get some good firepower forwards to help lebron: marion, kirilenko, stojakovic, josh smith, charlie villanueva or d. west.
you can still play shaq to clog the lane and have a firepower forward launching threes so lebron can either drive/dunk or pass.
too bad that “forward launching threes” was supposed tobe jamison. hey, they can see if they can pry nowitzki off of mark cuban.
im not that sold on cleveland needing a PG; they have three or four there. Lebron is a point-forward similar to prince and odom. he can always play point (magic was a 6-9 point guard) and either defer to shooting forwards or create a play with his speed and strength.
choose...
1 – Lebron James / Parker
2 – Raja Bell / Telfair
3 – JJ Hickson / Green
4 – Chris Bosh / Moon
5 – Shaq / Powe
you’d probably give up Mo, West, Z, Jamison and Varejao to make this work. but your 4 and 5 are strong defenders and your 1 and 2 will lock the back court.
or
1 – Lebron James / Parker
2 – Stojakovic / Telfair
3 – Tayshaun Prince / Green
4 – Elton Brand / Moon
5 – Shaq / Powe
this will be a versatile team built for speed and 3 point shooting. 1 and 3 are defended well and 4 and 5 are no slouch either.
off season
What were you smoking when you came up with that line up ?

What would you want back from the Bulls in a S&T for LeBron.
Barring Rose and Noah of course, as management has said they are untouchable. ;)
