REPORT - Brian Shaw To Be Named Cavaliers Coach

Fanhouse.com's Sam Amick is reporting that 'with or without LeBron', Brian Shaw will be the next Head Coach of the Cavaliers.

A source told FanHouse the Lakers assistant is finalizing a deal to join the Cavaliers just one day before James' much-anticipated free agency begins. Shaw was a finalist with former New Orleans and New Jersey coach Byron Scott after Michigan State coach Tom Izzo declined the team's offer earlier this month.

Shaw has been an assistant with the Lakers for several years and many think he is more than ready to become a head man.  It was thought he would be a strong candidate in Los Angeles should Phil Jackson chose not to return.

Shaw's agent is reportedly in Cleveland finalizing a deal while Shaw has been on the phone putting together a staff.

Would have preferred Scott

as he’s been there before. He took 2 teams to the NBA Finals, has coached elite NBA talent before and would make the team instantly legitimate with or without Lebron.

Not saying Shaw won’t be a quality headcoach but this smells of rebuilding.

but this smells of rebuilding.

Really? I thought if that Cavs were looking to hire the coach for rebuilding they’d have went with Scott, who he himself stated he’d want the Cavs job, whether LeBron stays or not.

As far as I know, not a lot of decent candidates are outright saying: I want to coach the Cavs, even without LeBron.

I think Scott

is a quality coach but he is a retread and Daniel Gilbert does not really want retreads. I like this move, Shaw was a very quality player and has been on the Lakers staff so he has some experience with post season coaching. Granted it wasn’t as the head man but it is better than nothing. Lets see where this goes. People are to quick to judge coaches with no reason to doubt them. It isn’t like a baseball player who has a track record of failing in the minors or was dumped by many organizations and that is a clue to something being amiss. (I.E the Indians Andy Marte) That said I am positive that Shaw would be able to accomplish at least what Mike Brown had and hopefully more.

Scott had problems with Jason Kidd, and with the team of N.O. Shaw won’t have those type of problems with the Cavs, and Shaw knows the triangle….

by BirthTimes on Jun 29, 2010 11:40 AM CDT reply actions

…and Shaw would be more appealing to LeBron than scott….

by BirthTimes on Jun 29, 2010 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

One pipe dream I had was perhaps Scott could have been appealing to his former point guard, Chris Paul. Paul was pretty upset when N.O. fired him, and openly expressed how highly he thought of him. I know it was a loooong shot, but maybe that he’d try and push N.O. into sign and trade with the Cavs, so he’d could play for his beloved former coach and do it along side LeBron James.

None of that probably had any shot at happening though.

LOL

The Cavs have no legitimate chance at Chris Paul and thinking so is a crack pipe dream. Don’t get me wrong that would be awesome but never would it happen. That is unless N.O totally wanted to blow it up and didn’t mind scrap metal pieces in return.

If you knew what “pipe dream” meant, you’d have never had to post this.

But clearly, you don’t, and you did.

LA TImes is now saying its pretty close to being a done deal as well. “close to accepting deal.”…says Shaw’s agent.

No complaints of this hire. Hey, at least LeBron (or whoever else) will have an idea of what’s finally going on with the franchise now that this is almost settled.

from the LA Times article – Shaw’s agent, Jerome Stanley, said via text Tuesday that Shaw was “close to accepting deal.”

If his inside knowledge of the Lakers helps us have any kind of one up on them, I’m all for it.

I’m not so much focused on how the Cavs might run the triangle offense, as say, how much Shaw knows about how the Lakers run it, and in turn the best way to defend them specifically, if we were to ever meet in the finals.

Even if we get Byron Scott, I’ll be happy with that hire as well. I see both of these guys as better options than Izzo was.

Inside knowledge

are you serious. Everything is on video tape, good coaching staffs can figure out how teams are running their offense and tendencies. Basketball is more about ego control and getting max effort from players and less about X and O’s. The reason the Cavs lost the last two years had to do with the skills of the players in the Orlando series and Lebron injury/loss of confidence in Mike Brown not about X and O’s.

You might

notice something different about your posts
and 90%
of the other posts in this thread.
Actually, you
probably won’t notice, so I won’t bother.

Anyway…

Basketball is more about ego control and getting max effort from players and less about X and O’s. The reason the Cavs lost the last two years had to do with the skills of the players in the Orlando series and Lebron injury/loss of confidence in Mike Brown not about X and O’s.

This is all irrelevant to what I said.

Inside knowledge
are you serious. Everything is on video tape, good coaching staffs can figure out how teams are running their offense and tendencies.

You’re saying that if we were to meet the Lakers in the Finals next season, that having their former assistant coach of seven years won’t offer any kind of extra help? C’mon now.
And if you say, “Well yes, but…” then you agree with that part of my post.

From a Laker fan...

Although i’ll be sad to see Shaw leave, you guys are getting a solid coach who, in my opinion, can lead a team to a title.

To anybody who wants to learn more about Brian Shaw, I highly recommend this fanpost:
http://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2010/4/1/1401074/brian-shaws-vengeance-throughout

To put it simply, Brian Shaw has become a kind of “Chuck Norris” character for us laker fans, mainly because of an incident with Sasha Vujacic.
