Wow.. I have to say that I have been waiting around for Windhorst to right something substantive about this whole ordeal and actually started thinking that he wasn’t going to add anything except his article for ESPN and a couple fluff pieces. Than I read this. This, in my opinion is much more damning and intriguing than Dan Gilbert’s rant.
question
Since the congress has investigated things like steroids in sports, etc., couldn’t there be some sort of investigation into possible collusion, tampering in this case?
I mean, this has changed the face of the NBA for the next 10 years and potentially crushed a franchise….and maybe not a congressional investigation but even some sort of NBA investigation?
Nice article but most of it takes information that has already been out there and was just collected and re worked to put into a nicely written short story. None of this is new or earth shattering.
For example, the story about Lebron changing numbers was actually discussed on WKNR this week as one of the hosts, I forget which one, said a cavs employee called him to say that should have been a sign that Lebron was leaving when he said he was changing numbers after the Miami game being that Miami already retired #23
How come none of our local guys that follow the cavs did NOT know that LeCon had not returned any calls to Gilbert in the off season ? That was the sure sign LeCon was gone.
As for mr lord of no rings quitting in the Celtics series, I think he obviously knew he was leaving Cleveland and during that series it hit him that he was really leaving and this was going to be his last series as a cav as he realized they were not going to win.
Although it is sad that a local player and future hall of famer has left town, I think it is time to move on and say good riddens. The cavs will bounce back and in the long run will probably be better for it.

As an NBA basketball and John Bena fan from NJ ..................
1. i love the “Lord of No Rings” line….sweet!
2. If a player at any level, gave up during a crucial series in the playoffs, no one would want them on their team. Because it was El-BJ he got a bit of pass with everyone thinking he would be back next year. Bottom line, it was shameful behavior and showed his true character. Jordan never quit on his team and James is no Jordan.
3. Any collusion or improper “negotiations” should be investigated by the NBA but you know they won’t. David Stern ain’t going after Wade, Bosh and LeBron Shames.
4. ESPN sucks, I’m just saying………………
I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not. Coach Norman Dale "Hoosiers"
Cavs tanked to get Lebron in the first place
That also ruins the integrity of the game. Lebron should have never been drafted by the Cavs, the Cavs cheated.

false…
-If the cavs were trying to throw it, why did they fire a coach and get one that was MORE successful not LESS. the coach that was fired went 8-34 while his replacement went 9-31.
-If the cavs were truly trying to throw the season, then they would have rested their key players, right? Nope…their 2 top players average 35 minutes a game together and only missed 4 games between them…our top option on offense in fact played more minutes than Wade ever has.
-the cavs were so bad that one of their best players was a 2nd round rookie in carlos boozer…yes, he turned out to be good, but rarely (if ever) does even a great steal of a non-lottery pick play in 81 games and play 25 minutes a game.
-The cavs did NOT have the worst record…they were tied for the worst, and in fact WON their last game…they won themselves out of the worst record on the last day…definitely doesn’t sound like throwing the season.
-The whole idea of lottery picks is to discourage throwing seasons which it has helped some in doing. in the past 10 years, only 2 ‘worst’ teams have gotten the #1 overall pick…this is less than the raw probability of 25% for the worst overall team. that is far from a guarantee.
Even in the draft, the cavs were not at all guaranteed the first overall pick. the worst team HAS to get a pick in the top 4 by rules…if they get to the 4th pick, they basically declare that team to have gotten the pick. Since lebron (2003…including that draft) only 2 first lottery teams have gotten the worst pick, while 3 have gotten the 4th overall pick…so its more likely for a team based on the statistics to get the worst possible pick they can get for their position than the best possible.

is he going to turn it down?
All these media folks are the biggest hypocrites out there. Everyone of them out grew their market and then left for bigger and better things.
Nobody outside of Cleveland know of or cared about Windhorst before LeBron and nobody will now, unless he leaves too. Mike and Mike arent going to have him on to discuss the potential of JJ Hickson.

yeah…for one year. In 2002-2003, they were last, the year before, 23d, and before that, 16th…so people HAD cared at one point…however 5 years of terrible, no name players, and bad play, culminating with a dreadful 17 win season WILL decrease attendance. When a cleveland team is dead last or near the bottom in attendance, you know something is wrong…usually the only thing that can cause it is prolonged futility and prolonged bad management…but this happens with any fan base.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
wouldnt count on stern getting involved
until the 3 players and all the miami officials sign confessions of tampering.
I’m not going to be a conspiracy theorist, but if these 3 have been planning this for years and playing for other teams, with the ultimate intention of signing in Miami (or New York/Chicago) at the end of this year regardless, that is a huge, huge problem.
Also, at this point, I think we can start to question whether there was ever any elbow injury at all. The quiting in game 5, the injury excuse, the left handed free-throws, it all points to Lebron putting on a elaborate show to allow him a excuse to leave when the Cavs lost (which, looking back, seems inevitable after the “elbow injury”).
“And the Bulls made it clear James’ friends would not be given the privileges they were given in Cleveland or the high-paying jobs.”

Cleveland (now) Rocks!
Thank God you have shed yourselves of the cancerous anal cavity that is LeFraud James. He is a disgraceful human being and his lapdogs (homoerotic lovers?) have caused him to think he is better than he is. You are better off without him. Though it may cause a few more losses this season, thank God you have an owner like Dan Gilbert who will call out Queen James for the unrepentant sissy he is. He is not a man. A man would finish what he started. He is a cowardly woman who pisses his pants at the prospect of real competition.
LeFraud has gone to D-Wade’s house to hide. He is a shameful pansy and I am morally sure he reads this blog. His craven effeminacy should be called out and the Queen should be given no place where he can hide his pancaked makeuped face. Thank your lucky stars that he has gone to join D-Wade’s all male revue down in the drag queen capital of the world.
LeFraud, you are hated by all true basketball fans. You suck.
...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

I find it very funny
that Dan Gilbert says Cleveland will win a championship before Miami does. Now, I’m no Heat fan but I will say that that statement is rediculous. You see, you have to make the playoffs to win the Finals and since LeBron was the entire Cavs team, I don’t see that happening. You guys couldn’t win the Finals WITH LeBron James, how do you expect to win it WITHOUT him? Also, a player can’t be loyal to a team that doesn’t help him out. He needed help. Kobe has Gasol, Paul Pierce has Allen and Garnett. Tim Duncan has Tony Parker, Michael Jordan had Pippen and Rodman AND Kerr. Larry Bird had Bill Russell. Magic had Kareem. No one player can win titles on his own. You guys never helped LeBron out and he wants to win a title. So he went somewhere where winning a title is likely. Quit bitching and feel lucky that he gave you 7 good years and a Finals appearance to make the miserable Cleveland sports history a tad brighter.
Hey man! D'you touch my drumset?
Yea, there’s nothing like being lectured to by a Mariners/Buccaneers/Pistons/Razorbacks fan. With that odd assortment of teams to root for, it’s clear you have no concept of loyalty yourself. You fit in well with LeBron.

You said it yourself, I’m a Pistons/BUCCANEERS/Mariners/ and Razorbacks fan. All losing teams. But no, I’m not loyal. If I wasn’t loyal, would I stick with an NFL team that went 3-13? I think not. If I wasn’t loyal, wouldn’t I become a Yankee fan? Probably. If I wasn’t loyal, wouldn’t I support a college like Texas or Alabama? Most Likely. I will not have my loyalty to my teams questioned.

and since LeBron was the entire Cavs team
uhh…there were 14 other players on the team including
Mo williams who was an all star a year ago, Jamison, a 2 time NBA all star and all around great player, Andy Varejao who was all NBA defense last year. Shaq and Z (who was a 2 time nba all star too)
These guys are not chicken crap. these guys are very good players and lebron would not have gotten as far as he did WITHOUT them. look at what Wade did in 2007-2008 with a terrible supporting cast? nothing…
Lebron had a much better supporting cast than people think…people tend to forget about these players, just like people tend to forget about guys like Byron Scott and AC green on those great laker teams. That is why Miami will never win a championship with those 3. they do not have the cap space to get anyone decent…
Also, a player can’t be loyal to a team that doesn’t help him out
uhh…yeah…they didn’t help him out…they only traded for an all star point guard, former all star Forward, and a Center with several rings…plus good perimeter defenders at guard…Yep…they did nothing and it is their fault for their inability to ever make a move that he is gone (/sarc)
and Rodman AND Kerr
and the cavs had Boobie AND Varejao, a 3 point specialist, and a D/Rebound specialist just like Rodman and Kerr…and I would probably take our role players over those 2 who get so overrated…plus we had mo AND jamison.
Larry Bird had Bill Russell
what? maybe in some weird dimension but when Bill russell was retiring, a young Larry bird was just hitting puberty…and no he was not a late bloomer, he was THIRTEEN.
Tim Duncan has Tony Parker
And i would take the 2010 versions of Jamison and Mo Williams over the 2005 versions of Tony parker (who was still fairly raw then) and Ginobili…and it isn’t even that hard of a decision.
There have been many teams to win championships with less help than Lebron got. Spurs in 2005, the 90s rockets with Olajuan, the ’79 Sonics, the 78 Bullets, the ’99 spurs, the 2004 Pistons…all these teams had less to complement their star.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
If not for LeBron,
Cleveland basketball would still be nothing. And all of you Cavs fans are just mad that he didn’t want to waste any more of his career without being a LEGITIMATE contender. Miami is the next dynasty…….Maybe Cleveland should have made it possible to get him some help this offseason and he would still be there.

Why anyone would feel like you captain is beyond me. I am not even a Cavs fan or from Cleveland and I find what he did to be awful. I wish people would stop bringing up the Gilbert guarantee. Every Cavs fan and non Cav’s fan alike knows that isn’t going to happen so it would be nice is people realized that. That letter was a pep talk to a fan base that just got ran over by a freight train. As for feeling lucky, lol, if you don’t understand why Cavs fans are so upset I would suggest looking into the context of the of how Lebron left and why he meant so much to the city. And I wish people everywhere would quit ripping on the city people live in as if it is indicative of what kind of people and sports teams they deserve. It is ridiculous.
actually
i think Gilbert should gracefully step back from his guarantee right now. Because the medias not going to let it go, and itl just be more embarrassing when he has to step back on it later. And the truth hurts, but cleveland couldnt get anything going this offseason, and if they had lebron wouldv stayed. Their presentation just tried to convince him he should stay in cleveland because its familiar and his hometown, they didnt convince him they had a plan to win.
And you addressed nothing in the article at all. If this had happened to Miami, you’d be mad as hell, and don’t even act like you wouldn’t be.

Cleveland basketball would still be nothing
actually, about 5 years before lebron came here, the cavs were something, and something legitimate. Just like Jordan found a roadblock of those piston teams in the 80s-early 90s, the cavs found a roadblock of jordan. The cavs had some amazing teams in the 90s but they always lost against the Bulls.
The cavs were something before lebron and we will be something after him. It is not like the franchise would cease to exist if he never came here…that is a ridiculous thing to say.
without being a LEGITIMATE contender
yeah, because he was never making the playoffs here or contending for a title…give me a break…
Miami is the next dynasty
Since you obviously don’t know that much about basketball history, I will let you in on a little secret..there are 5 guys on a court and to have a dynasty, you have to have more than 3 passable players. miami doesn’t have enough money to sign much outside of guys for the league minimum…the kind of guys that most teams wouldn’t sign if they could help it.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
Only in a city where drugs and crime are sensationalized would people celebrate the fraud and travesty that has occurred. Miami fans see nothing wrong because these are the same people that celebrate that trashy university’s football program.

Do you mean like the people who look at the Ohio State University as a "shining beacon of what is to be desired"?
I mean, besides back in the late 70’s when the NCAA was investigating it for illegal recruiting and exchanging cash for players in Football. Or back in 2004 when it was sanctioned and put on 3 years probation for the many NCAA rules violations it admitted to in Basketball. Or back amidst the Maurice Clarett scandal when it left him hung out to dry to save the Football program and coach who “knew nothing” of the many gifts and payoffs he was receiving to play there.
You mean like that?

Actually it really doesn't matter what USC does because as a USC alum I'm well aware of what my school is and has been guilty of.
I however am not naive and/or uniformed enough to bash another school like or friend gahnki has when his school has been guilty of NCAA recruiting violations, payola to players and their families and other illegal activities in the past too.
And if you read and understood the tone of my post, you’d understand that I wasn’t “attacking” OSU, I was merely stating FACTS as opposed to generalizations.
But it’s ok, who wants those pesky truths to come out in an argument, right?

by the violations in basketball are you talking about this?
On June 8, 2004, then-Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger fired O’Brien for alleged NCAA rules violations. After a trial during which the former Chairman of the NCAA Committee on Infractions testified that O’Brien had not engaged in a violation of NCAA rules, the Ohio Court of Claims determined that Ohio State breached its contract with O’Brien by terminating him and that the school engaged in conduct that was “not consistent with good faith and fair dealing” in terminating Coach O’Brien and awarded him $2.4 million.
yeah…no violations actually occured except for an improper hiring.
Clarrett? you mean…
Clarett became the center of an academic scandal when a teaching assistant told the New York Times that Clarett had received preferential treatment from a professor; the investigation did not find sufficient evidence of academic misconduct.
he publicly maligned OSU officials for not paying for him to fly home for the funeral of a friend
Ohio State later suspended Clarett for the 2003 athletic year after he was charged with filing a false police report. Clarett had filed a false claim that more than $10,000 in clothing, CDs, cash and stereo equipment were stolen from a car he borrowed from a local dealership in September 2003. Athletic Director Andy Geiger stated that Clarett also took thousands of dollars in special benefits and repeatedly misled investigators.
you think maybe he brought a bit on himself?
