Daniel 'Boobie' Gibson - An Open Letter To Cavaliers Fans

Cavaliers G Daniel Gibson wrote the following letter to Cavaliers fans on his website -

What Up World,

This Message is Directly for the fans of Cleveland from your adopted son, The one and only Boobie G. As you know i was born and raised in Houston, TX. Never once stayed outside the state for more than two weeks and the time I did, that was for basketball. But after two years of college at the University of Texas I decided to make the jump. You can just imagine how fast my mind was racing going to a city so many miles out of my comfort zone not knowing one single person. But I thank God it was Cleveland! Because From day one the city embraced me and made me feel like I was home. My Second HOME. And as time went on I began to see why we connected. Cleveland is a never die city, city of loyalty, hard-workers, passion, desire, and toughness. A lot of the same characteristics I have in me and that inspired me. So I made a promise to myself that every day I stepped foot on that basketball court I would show the world what Cleveland was all about. Leaving everything i had on the court. So no matter what obstacle was placed in front of me, I would bust right through it. No matter how high, I would get over it. Or how wide I would get around it. N I hope I did that and will continue to do that. I said that to say, I know right now emotions are high, and people are confused about the way things went down. But I'm here to say DO NOT FORGET THAT WE STILL HERE. and WE GONE GRIND!!!! The Cavaliers haven't went anywhere, just lost a piece. Everything in life happens for a reason, Some which we dont understand and never will. Somethings we cant control, But the thing we can control is our passion and our love for city of Cleveland and state of OHIO. And that every single night we take that we floor We Will represent. Blood SweAT and Tears. We will go hard. Just like you. From the bottom to the top, this organization is committed to winning and we wont stop now..... Cant stop now. I LOVE you. We Love YOU. And together We gone make it HAppen. O H I O. Hang in there.

As for me on another note, I'm in LA working on my game so that i may be a key part of this movement next season. The family is doing great. MY wife to be is in the studio every day and night trying to create the best album of her career. Cutting no corners putting her heart in it like never before. With so much new emotion to show the world. My son Daniel Jr. is 4 months now. Everyday he gets bigger. We took him to the doctor yesterday to get two shots. And lil man did not shed a tear. even laughed a little bit. Tough lil dude, something like his daddy LOL. The rest of the fam is back home in Houston working with the DGib Hoops Foundation-Shooting for Success. Helping mainly inner city youth to meet new friends, become more discipline, athletically and academically so that one day they may qualify for scholarships and go on to college and be whatever they want to be. Following a living example. ME... Well thats enough for today, yall stay tuned for my next post and remember if you believe, you can achieve. ANYTHING

Cleveland Stand up

1LUV,

BooBie

If we move Delonte and Danny Green, I wonder if Mo could move over to the 2 spot and Boobie could maybe start some games. We need to get a good attacker though to get him some clear threes!

by King Tony on Jul 11, 2010 9:27 PM CDT reply actions

There is no way we can start a backcourt of Mo and Boobie. For starters, they wouldn’t be able to guard anyone. Both of them are way too short to cover 2-guards.

I don’t want to trade Danny Green. He’s a young guy who could turn out to be a worthwhile player.

by Buckeye Brad on Jul 11, 2010 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed. Trading Green would be hasty, and Mo and Boobie would be a certain defensive, and perhaps offensive, disaster…although we haven’t been getting much offensive production out of the 2-slot as it is. The problem is that we have undersized 2-guys playing the point. If Boobie can change his game to be a distributor on the drive, who can also make the three well enough to keep defenses honest, then he should get a chance. Otherwise we need to trade either him or Mo to get someone who can play that role.

Every pessimist thinks himself a realist. In the case of Cleveland sports fans, they are probably right.

Class act. Go Boobie!

Where's your crown, KIng Nothing?

by Turkmenbashi on Jul 11, 2010 9:33 PM CDT reply actions

I wish Gilbert handled it a little more like Boobie.

Don’t go out and attack LeBron, just let the fans know that the Cavs aren’t going away even though he’s going away.

After his huge hit in playing time over the past few years, it really shows that Boobie is a class act to still love the city and talk this highly of the franchise. Here’s to hoping he gets some increased playing time next year.

by sexsalad on Jul 11, 2010 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

The more and more I think about Gilbert’s letter the more I feel it was a mistake. He should have slept on it and toned it down a bit. Got no problem with him feeling that way as I have a lot of the same thoughts about the whole ugly situation but a man in his position needs to keep a level head.

Going forward it would be best for everyone to take the high road. Doesn’t mean we need to root for Miami or LeBron to do well cause I sure as hell will never do that but to waste energy wishing negative things on him and his new team is just a waste of energy and makes you look small and bitter.

Look, we are lucky to have Gilbert as an owner because he’s shown he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make us win and he obvoiusly is emotionaly invested in his teams success. Like Boobie said, we still have a team and they are ready to prove to everyone that basketball in Cleveland is far from dead. The guys remaining in Cleveland deserve our support. Lets get behind them and the front office and coaching staff. LeBron was here 7 years and we have nothing to show for it. In the end this all might turn out for the best for all parties involved.

It's hard not to like him.

Dude’s a great role player, unselfish, a class act and he’s stepped up big for us in the playoffs before.

What a lot of people don’t know is how smart he is. He was a member of the National Honor Society in high school. That’s a huge accomplishment for a regular person, let alone someone who had to focus as time as him towards basketball.

by sexsalad on Jul 11, 2010 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

The grammar in that letter kinda hides how smart he is. But I like the sentiment a lot.

by JulioBernazard on Jul 12, 2010 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Kind of like how LeBron leaving Cleveland hides how loyal he is

Judging by the way that was written I have a feeling it was a Twitter post or something. It’s definitely not a formal letter.

I live in Cincinnati. I'm a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cincinnati sports teams. Besides UC, I'm a Xavier fan for basketball. I also like the Ohio State Buckeyes for all sports.

My name is Tyler. So I guess now you know about me.

Never mind, it says there it was on his website.

Stand up move.

I really admire this guy for his attitude. Can’t imagine what that locker room is going through right now. Staring at a 20-win season in July’s gotta be disheartening to say the least.

Wrote this piece for my blog about “LeBron’s Abandoned Legacy.” It’s from the point of view of a Cleveland outsider, but I think you all would like it, and it touches on a few things that have yet to be mentioned. Enjoy.

Hm.

Knicks fan here, so I’m not deeply familiar with the players on Cleveland’s roster, but I think the Cavaliers will do significantly better than 20 wins. From what I see, I’d expect mid-high 30s, but of course I could be wrong. Y’all will be fine :)

In the wake of all this nonsense, I (and plenty of others I imagine) will be rooting for you. At least, when you’re not against the Knicks.

by twincitiesknick on Jul 11, 2010 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Same here.

Sticking to 20-ish wins, but I’m pulling hard for you guys. I’m from Miami – never been a Heat fan – and this bandwagon jumping is making is sick.

knicks fan here

Chin up guys hope you guys knocks the Cavs off for the playoff, I would not be surprise if you guys do better without LeCon

At least you won’t choke during playoffs now

Good luck next year

Celtics fan here.

I never liked you guys, you know.

Really didn’t.

Heard so much bad stuff about LeBron that it dragged your image, that of the Cavs, down.

Let me tell you this much; now that you’ve been “betrayed” by LeBron, you’ve just gained a WHOLE lot of respect, a whole lot of credit, from every single person that loves the game of basketball.

I won’t say I’ve become a fan, but I will say that I’ll root for you, a lot.

I will cheer for you,

… and with me, many, many others.

Good luck out there.

Am I the only Cavs fan not upset at Lebron?

1. He’s going to Miami, where he’ll team up with Wade and Bosh, and have no income taxes on home games. This is not something that the Cavs could offer him. We could have gotten Bosh in a sign-and-trade, and probably then kept Lebron, but it would have put us a staggering amount over the cap.

2. As far as the announcement goes, his people had been leaking it all over the place a day earlier. It was only the media who made us keep hope. It’s not even a coincidence that Lebron, Wade, and Bosh expired at the same time- they set it up four years ago.

3. Not enough is made about the draft picks we’re getting. We’re getting draft picks (2 1st, 1 2nd, and a cap exception) thanks to Lebron asking for a 6th year on his deal. If he said he wanted a 5 year deal, we wouldn’t be getting anything out of this at all.

4. The Cavs did a nice job of surrounding Lebron with talent, as shown by our W-L record the last two years. We did our best, we came up short, and we were on the downhill for the next two years even with Lebron. Ferry gave it his best, which was darn good but not good enough.

Am I disappointed? Sure. I was hoping he’d stay. I don’t think he made us wait overlong- the free agency period only started July 1st. If he’d waited until August, yeah, I’d be mad. But as a business decision, I certainly understand it.

A few other points, just for the heck of it.
1. Dan Gilbert was way out of line.
2. Yeah, the Cavaliers did quit. Being down 11 with 93 seconds left, your odds aren’t good. But you gotta try.
3. Not enough is being made about how the free agency rules are going to change after next year. I think they’re going to kill Miami. Yeah, they’ll have the big three…and 0 cap space to sign everybody else. All these exemptions are going to go out the window. No more 100 million dollar teams.

by MatthewH on Jul 12, 2010 8:50 AM CDT reply actions

I too think that the NBA may have to take a hard look at free agency. What happens next year when Melo and Chris Paul are free agents and they bail to NYC or Boston. Does the NBA want to end up like MLB where only a handful of teams have a realistic chance of sustaining long term success or holding on to their superstars?

There is a reason why the NFL is #1. The NFL system gives every team the same chance of success. The Browns and Lions have stunk because they have made poor decisions not because they couldn’t/wouldn’t spend money or weren’t in a flashy market. It is also quite possible that the Browns and Lions could be playoff teams in a year or two. That is the beauty of the NFL.

by mgtbfb on Jul 12, 2010 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

the draw of either warm weather or huge markets with championship asperatiosn

drives free agents, period – and always will, it’s stinks.

Miami shouldn’t qualify as a “huge” market. Of the NBA cities Miami is 20th in terms of population. Cleveland is 21st.

by Chief WaDrew on Jul 12, 2010 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

The great thing about the NFL is that if you rebuild, you do it through drafting.

I think this may be partially because of how complex an NFL playbook is. Free agents often have a hard time adjusting so instead of getting them teams load up on quality draft picks to rebuild with young talent. That’s just the way it is, you don’t bring in free agents to solve your problems.

by sexsalad on Jul 12, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Question about the picks-

I’m assuming those picks will be Miami’s right? I’m not gonna put my money on Miami being a lottery team, so are those picks really gonna be that great? The most value they have is to be included in a trade.

Where is the SBN Buckeye blog?

by allovertheplace on Jul 13, 2010 7:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Tony Parker was a 28th pick. Gilbert Arenas was 30th overall. Latrell Sprewell was taken 24th overall.

Some great players can come in the late 1st round.

The NFL is better because it is the only true team sport that has a equitable revenue structure. The NBA is an individual game masquerading as a team sport.

I think they market better than anyone also.

Look at some of the hot teams the past few years..

Minnesota
New Orleans
Pittsburgh
Indianapolis

They were getting as much if not more press than Dallas or the New York teams and that without convincing Peyton Manning or Adrian Peterson to leave for a bigger market.

Cavs in Twenty-Ten / Eleven

You’ve got to hope that B. Scott let’s the Cavs run the floor – especially if we are going with a young lineup. If we have 10 guys getting 24 minutes a game, it’s fine with me as long as everyone is going full throttle. More 110-104 games (win or lose) and less 90-88 (let’s take our chances stopping the final shot) games.

As for the past, yes, it’s history; however, we should have had the Celtics lining up for an oxygen tank.

And - if Mark Price offers to help with free throw technique TAKE HIM UP ON HIS OFFER ! Better yet, MAKE HIM AN OFFER.

Thank you Daniel Gibson for your class response!! Boobie has been my favorite Cav and I was sad he did not play as much this past season. However just like this letter he handled that with class and dignity as well. Daniel is right; the Cavs are not gone only LeBron. The team maybe stronger now, someone will step out of the shadow that was LeBron and shine. The whole team as the potential to shine. We as Cavs fans will continue to back Our team, keep selling out the Q guys. I myself will try to make it home for a few games myself. Go Boobie, go Mo and go CAVS!!!!. Thank you again Daniel for your wonderful letter. If I know Cleveland, they will continue to support you and your teammates and you guys will thrive.
