Dan Gilbert Responds To Jesse Jackson

Short, sweet and to the point, Dan Gilbert has this for Jesse Jackson -

I strongly disagree with Rev. Jesse Jackson's recent comments and we are not going to engage in any related discussion on it. Going forward, we're very excited about the Cavaliers and the positive future of our region.

Not to mention it's ridiculous.

I mean, come on. Dan Gilbert paid the man hundreds of millions of dollars. How does the word “slave” even end up in this discussion? Only Jesse Jackson.

I would love to be a “slave” for 16 million a year plus endorsements.

The guy lost any legacy or relevance he ever had in about 1970. After that he’s just been a sad joke.

by johnnyphoenix on Jul 12, 2010 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

It’s not even worth discussing.

Obviously Jesse needs to work up some ‘racism’ somewhere…it is, of course, how he makes his living. It’s his job, and a way he can get his name back in the tabloids…

Jesse Jackson has become a caricature of what he once was. It’s a shame that he ruined his once-respected name.

I think I’m too young, because as far as I know he’s always been a race baiting douchebag.

by Simmsinns on Jul 12, 2010 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

The “race card” is used in every situation by classless indiviuals like Jackson who don’t think black people should have to work. That’s the way the world is. His comments are ridiculous.

I live in Cincinnati. I'm a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cincinnati sports teams. Besides UC, I'm a Xavier fan for basketball. I also like the Ohio State Buckeyes for all sports.

My name is Tyler. So I guess now you know about me.

What’s also ridiculous is that no one in the legacy media is willing to call Jackson on this. Wire reports basically say “Jackson criticizes Gilbert.”

Blake: Thanks to you, I am damaged beyond repair!!

Like it or not...

When you put out a scathing letter and make inflamatory comments like Gilbert did you have to understand and accept that others are going to voice their own opinions on what was written and said.

I personally don’t see what was said and written as “racially motivated”, however, it’s easy to see how someone could interpret it that way. Hometown hero or not, this is still a business. 7 years ago Gilbert and LeBron entered into a legal, binding contract. Services for Money. That’s it. This wasn’t some sort of Blood Oath. This wasn’t a childhood pact between brothers. The man served out his contract and when he decided to leave Gilbert exploded in a childish fit of rage instead of playing it diplomatic like a man in a position of power should.

Cleveland fans can play that “passion” card all they want for their owner but the fact is he came off exactly like the desperate, petty, psychotic ex-girlfriend who couldn’t let go of the man who dumped her and moved on with his life. NOW he’s a spineless, cowardly loser? AND he put a “curse” on him?

If your buddy and you were sitting at a bar and he told you this same story but instead it was about his ex and him, you wouldn’t be laughing your ass off at her?

EXACTLY. So now you know how those of us on the outside looking in see it.

And now I know why no one will ever understand what it means to be a Cleveland fan since you obviously speak for the masses. Thanks buddy!

Well, I mean since all the masses were over at my house for a BBQ and to watch the LeBron show we figured one of us should be appointed to speak for all of us.

I was elected through a blind vote.

Isn’t that cool?!

Nah, just the replies to his gimmick.

+1, rec’d, whatever you wanna call it ;)

Cheers, and good luck again, Cavs!

What a boring and tired explanation. First, yes, we all know someone might respond. In fact, when I first heard Gilbert had issued a statement, I was almost certain someone would outlandishly accuse him of some sort of racial impropriety. But Gilbert’s letter was probably what the vast majority of Cleveland fans were thinking themselves.

Second, yes, we all understand the business aspect of it, that LeBron was a free agent and free to leave. This has to be about the laziest explanation of all. No one was under any suspicions otherwise that this was free agent summer; doesn’t mean we aren’t going to be royally pissed off about what transpired.

by Western Reserve on Jul 13, 2010 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

it’s easy to see how someone could interpret it that way.

No its not. Jesse Jackson is just practicing his classic “race baiting”

Slavery: a system in which people are the property of others. Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth, and deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to demand wages

not at all what lebron is though.

The man served out his contract and when he decided to leave Gilbert exploded in a childish fit of rage instead of playing it diplomatic like a man in a position of power should.

the thing is though, that this is only one side of the story. imagine if you are a boss (or executive) and you have a star worker and he has a contract for a certain amount of years. he always talks to you and people outside the company that he wants to bring this company to the top, make it a fortune 500 company…make the company huge. He is helping you on the way there, but he demands a lot. He demands private jets, more vacation time, and jobs for all of his friends. He keeps talking about the company in long term senses and what he wants to do and talks about his loyalty there, but only commits on paper to short term agreements. You bring in the best and the brightest you can find from top schools to surround him and do everything in your power to make the company great around him. He then has an opporunity to meet with other companies. He assures you of his loyalty. He then goes to the media with his decision. you try to contact him time and time again during the whole process because as a business, you need a backup plan in case he leaves. you even go out and change the COO of the company to fit his needs. he doesn’t return your calls and then on national TV spites you, decides to leave, and goes back on everything he said…as the exective, you would be pissed, right?

This is pretty much the situation lebron got himself into. He talked all the time, every time he got in front of the media about how he wanted to make cleveland a winner and wanted to stay here and build a team. However, when push came to shove, he really didn’t. He never returned gilbert’s calls and in hindsight it almost seems like it was in part to spite his former team. Other teams truly were more prepared to have a backup plan. The knicks had signed amare…But he was truly handcuffing the Cavs in free agency. gilbert was harsh and maybe too emotional but the facts are there and much of what he said was deserved.

gilbert should have been the better man but sometimes its hard to be the better person when the other person is being so childish…they often can drag you down.

We all know JJ was way out of line for what he said.

I think Dan overreacted, but what he said wasn’t false. Lebron wants nothing more than to play with his friends and have fun.

Man, I know if I say this I’ll probably get bashed, but I feel terrible for Cavs fans.

by Stacey_Is_King on Jul 13, 2010 12:15 AM CDT reply actions

A hard general problem for all people is to be “happy.” Lebron wants to be “happy.”

by DPS on Jul 13, 2010 12:25 PM CDT reply actions

Which is why he'll never be as good as Jordan...

Jordan wanted to smash you into the ground, and then dance on your corpse. He wanted to beat you so badly that you would quit basketball and start playing soccer. Jordan didn’t want friends, even his teammates hated him… But he was such a fierce competitor it never mattered. But that other guy just wants to be happy…

Queen James is a disgusting human being

And a disgraceful excuse for a “competitor.” He is the most womanish “athlete” in sports. And that includes female sports.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.
