Let Barnes go to LA

Screw Matt Barnes, let him go to the LA Lakers.  Matt Barnes is nothing special and he is not a player you want for a rebuilding team.  A look at the free agent market, there are other players you can find that are just as good and could be a lot cheaper and would be worth a gamble for a year.  Here is the list http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=FreeAgents-10-11.   If I'm the GM, I'm looking at such players like Joe Alexander at SF, Acie Law at PG, Jarvis Hayes at SF, Randolph Morris at C, Stephen Graham at SF/SG,  Joey Graham SF/SG, Mardy Collins PG/SG, Antoine Wright at SF, Patrick O' Bryant at C,  Josh Boone at C,  and Shannon Brown at SG.    For SG, my first choice would be Shannon Brown.  For SF, my first choice would be Joe Alexander.  For C, my first choice would be Josh Boone.  I don't know what happened to Joe Alexander, he looked really good at West Virginia and was a lottery pick.  Milwaukee never truly gave him a chance and then he was traded as an extra.  I think if given the chance here in Cleveland, he could suceed, if nothing else it would be worth a gamble for one year.  Another guy, that could be good and worth a gamble is Acie Law, again never given a chance in Atlanta and was traded as an extra.  He was really good at Texas A&M.   I wouldn't be upset if going into the season our starting line-up was Alexander, Hickson, Boone, Mo, and Brown.   It is better than our current line-up as of right now is Hickson, Moon, Andy, Mo, and Parker.  Moon, Parker, and Andy should all be coming off the bench regardless of us rebuilding or not.   Just a side note, Shannon Brown is a long shot to come here but still if I was the GM he would be first choice.  Easily the best SG on the market right now.

Agreed, letting Matt Barnes come to the Lakers was the most prudent move for the Cavs. The last thing the cavs wanna do is make stupid, cap-hogging, franchise crippling moves. Barnes while an excellent role player, he is not the type of player you put on a team with a clear superstar otherwise you end up with a guy like Trevor Ariza.

I’m wondering who the Cavs are gonna put on their roster however to sell tickets. I guess Jameson and Mo Williams aren’t terrible pieces, but why don’t you see if you guys can get Gilbert Arenas on the cheap, cuz you know Washington does not want Wall getting mixed up in Arena’s drama. Sure it might not be a championship or even playoff winning move, but its worth a shot and could very well get the cavs into the 8th or even 6th seed! You guys were still pretty good without James!

exactly…We already have an athletic, lanky, role player at the 3 who can defend well. His name is Jamario Moon and for all intensive purposes he is about as good as barnes, but not as streaky of a shooter. Personally, I would start Moon over Barnes anyways.

J Moon

I like Moon. I’d even put him @ #2. Hell, he’d be better than Parker. Parker avg only 7-8 pts/game. He’s sooo slow he gets beat on defense all the time. Only problem who else wants him?n Like to see D. Green pkay more too. He can play #2 or #3 too. Let Andy start, but need backup. Maybe Koufus, 7’1" in think & a local kid. He can shoot some outside too. Watched him in HS. JJ & Antwan @ PF & also have Jawad Willams @ 6’9" can play #3 & 4.. Just wish had a more consistant PG that can play good Defense

No offense but I think you are overhyping J Moon. Moon is an ok defender. I think Moon is an ok player, a player that is good enough to come off the bench. The Cavs definitely need to get a new SF. I agree Parker is nothing special. I would say we need a new SG. Quite honestly the Cavs need a lot of things. We need a new SF, SG, and C. The position we are set at is PF with JJ and Andy. As far as Koufas, I’m not to high on him, he did not impress me at Ohio State. With an uptempo offense, your center does not need to shoot 3s or even be a good shooter. The Cavs need a center that can rebound and defend the paint. That is why I hope they go after Josh Boone. This truly sucks, the Cavs are stuck in neutral and they can’t do much to change it this year. The only thing we can do is play out the season and slowly trade away guys like Jamison, Parker, Moon, Mo Williams, and Powe. Hopefully with every trade, we shoot for a 1st round pick and unfortunately settle for 2nd round picks if need be. If we acquire enough 2nd round picks, we may be able to move up in the 1st.

by FreddieC on Jul 23, 2010 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

like FreddieC said, you are definitely overhyping moon. I may start moon over him just because of youth and his a bit better on D and with speed, but moon is not a good passer for a SF and your off guard should be able to pass a bit. Moon is also a very streaky shooter and not that consistent, especially compared to Parker.

Jawad i feel gets overrated. Jawad is a nice player but I don’t feel his offense or D is anywhere near solid enough to start yet. His D is slightly below average at best at this point. He is a tweener forward and cannot consistently guard quicker 3s like pierce and is not strong enough to play 4 consistently. His jumper is also not that consistent yet.

I wouldn’t mind Green starting at some point this year, but he is not IMO a consistent enough shooter to start. He is a good shooter but needs to work on consistency as a shooter and scorer. He is good everywhere else and is a good rebounder and solid ballhandler for a guard.

As gahnki told you on DBN just a few days ago, it’s “for all intents and purposes” not “intesive purposes” — that makes absolutely no sense. Do you really not read what people respond to you?

Let’s see . . . so you agree with the part that doesn’t criticize you. How surprising.

First of all, saying “intensive purposes” instead of “intents and purposes” isn’t a grammatical mistake — a grammar mistake is missing an apostrophe or using the wrong tense or something like that. The phrase you used is completely nonsensical. Secondly, the point isn’t that you used that phrase, it’s that you used it again only a few days after someone already corrected you about it. That just shows why you frustrate so many people — because you don’t listen to anybody’s suggestion and keep doing the same things over and over again no matter what anyone says to you. That’s the point I was trying to get across to you (and many others have many times before). But, all you do is get upset and make excuses and fire back insults without thinking about what we’re saying to you, so you keep doing the same things over and over again. Let’s please stop this cycle.

by Buckeye Brad on Jul 26, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

"intensive purposes" instead of "intents and purposes" isn’t a grammatical mistake

I agree. I have heard the phrase used and have used it a couple times. I think I just heard the wrong words when I heard it b/c I have never seen it spelled out (for all intensive purposes sounds similar to ‘for all intents and purposes’…at least if you are not pronouncing it right)

I know now that gahnki was saying that. However, I did not just ignore what he said. I read what he said, I just didn’t understand that this is what he was saying. Now that I understand, I will not say it again.

Please do not assume that I didn’t read it, and start off condescending because that is what annoyed me in the first place.

I do listen to people’s suggestions. I may not always remember suggestions 100% of the time when I am posting but I do put in an effort to change when I get a suggestion.

I really do not fire back insults and you are really just not telling the truth here. I try to avoid insults when possible and the way you say this, you say it as if it is a common occurrance for me. Maybe every once in a while, but everyone makes mistakes every once in a while

picking on someone’s spelling or grammar is a dumb person’s argument. A spell/grammar check comes free with almost any software. If you actually want to show that you’re intelligent, than start debating his ideas over technicalities.

You have to like Barnes’ spunk, but he is an accessory, not a solution. He’d have been useful on a team that still had LeCrock, or a suitable replacement.

Every pessimist thinks himself a realist. In the case of Cleveland sports fans, they are probably right.

by evereye3 on Jul 23, 2010 1:57 PM CDT reply actions

I don't want to overpay role players like Barnes, I want to rebuild with draft picks.

That being said… I still want Shannon Brown if at all possible. We can rebuild with him as a role player because he’s fairly young and he’d be amazing in Scott’s up-tempo system.

Other than that… use old talent like Jamison to trade for expiring contracts and a shitload of draft picks. If we’re lucky we’ll find a few great prospects and those picks will pay off.

I thought he was referring to Joe Alexander, just was not sure. Some analyst I don’t remember where was saying Shannon Brown is only good in the triangle offense with Kobe. I don’t agree with that, with Shannon Brown being so young and athletic, why wouldn’t he be good in an uptempo offense like Bryon Scott. I remember last year with NO, Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton looked mighty good in that offense. That being said, he is probably staying in LA.

by FreddieC on Jul 23, 2010 5:23 PM CDT reply actions

Brown would be great in an up tempo offense. He’s one of the best pure athletes in the NBA.

by sexsalad on Jul 23, 2010 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

its because when run properly, the triangle gives great angles for athletic players to take advantage of their defenders with as long as a great passer is there to give it to him. But the reason is also because Shannon’s handles and shot selection leave something to be desired, especially because he had a hand injury last year. I’d be interested to see if his shooting touch returns and dribbling improves after offseason rest for his injury.

by Marty Mart on Jul 26, 2010 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I know Byron Scott was fired last year but NO was still running the same offense at least I think they were, they had the smallest backcourt and they looked mighty quick.

by FreddieC on Jul 23, 2010 5:26 PM CDT reply actions

All honesty, I look at this team and I see a 30 win team. This team is not built for an uptempo offense. I see only 3 players on this roster that would be good in an uptempo offense. They are Hickson, Eyenga, and Telfair. Everybody else is probably good for a Mike Fratello type offense. You guys ever wonder, looking back now with Lebron, that we did not get the 1st pick in the draft and instead ended up with the 2nd pick in the draft. Then we could have drafted Carmelo instead of Lebron. You guys are going to think am an avengeful fan but I am not. Carmelo would have been a better pick for a team, #1 Carmelo does not need to command the ball so much like Lebron therefore it would have been a lot easier to build a team rather one player and bunch of role players.

by FreddieC on Jul 23, 2010 10:49 PM CDT reply actions

Shannon Brown is a must sign...

He has had the chance to go out and play on a winning team. He is still young with some experience now. Give him the full Mid-Level Exception for a 5 year deal. He should get right around 5 years and $25 million dollars anyways. He is a high flyer and so is Eyenga.

I still want to see some players get moved for draft picks and possible young players.

I want to know how in the hell we missed out on Pooh Jeter. What happened there? There were some gems in the summer league (Chism, Dyson, Jeter).

by Tiny iZ Boss on Jul 26, 2010 10:55 AM CDT reply actions

5 years of Shannon Brown? Is that what we’ve come to? Are we that desparate already? The last thing we need to do is give 5 year contracts at full MLE to career backups and underperformers.

lets not carried away here… shannon brown is a suitable backup I guess, but even Laker fans don’t really care for him that much. Most of actually would prefer to use Sasha Vujacic over Shannon Brown, so that is saying a lot about Shannon Brown. He tends to jack terrible shots, and goes away from the offense…. the only good thing about Shannon is his exciting dunks, and his weak side defensive blocks… He is young, athletic, and exciting to watch no doubt, but giving him the Full MLE is a bit desperate

Shannon is not worth

by Marty Mart on Jul 26, 2010 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

5 years for Shannon Brown is ridiculous, I was thinking that the Cavs would be smart to split the mid-level between 2-3 players. Signing Shannon Brown to the full mid-level, that is what the Cavs should not do, the Cavs don’t need to start overpaying role players just because nobody will come here. Besides who knows if Shannon Brown is really good, I know he is super athletic, getting props from Kobe about his athleticism, but is he a good shooter, can he become a scorer. Sign him to one year if he plays good enough with significant playing time then he may be worth a full mid-level exception. $3-3.5 million sounds right but I think he probably will get that from the Lakers. I really don’t pay more than that for an unknown.

by FreddieC on Jul 26, 2010 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Shannon is not at all worth the full MLE

This is coming from a laker fan who has seen a man’s life worth of shannnon consistently going under screens instead of over them and going into WAKIM (Weak Ass Kobe Imitation
Mode), by taking ill-advised 15 foot jumpshots with 3 guys on him.

It's Kobe's world, but Lebron's just living in it. -- Czheck

by smart_guy on Jul 30, 2010 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Shannon's not worth the MLE

nor will he get it! I kind of hope that Shannon moves on from the Lakers even though i am a Laker fan. I doesn’t fit in with the Lakers.

With some hard work in the gym, Brown can become a very productive player. He needs to work on his finishing inside, and his handles. Not to mention the guy needs to get some scoring moves when driving. He drives perfectly but then gets lost and doesn’t know how to put it in the hoop unless he is dunking.

Work on a floater, watch some tape of Tony Parker or Nash. Work on your game and you could be very productive.

by plyka on Jul 31, 2010 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Your explanation of Shannon Brown reminds me of Sasha Pavlovic, the dude got to the hole no problem but was never able to finish. If Pavlovic had some finishing moves, the dude would be pretty good basketball player.
