Cavaliers Acquire PG Ramon Sessions, C Ryan Hollins For Delonte West, Sebastian Telfair
The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired guard Ramon Sessions, center Ryan Hollins and Minnesota's second round pick in the 2013 NBA Draft from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for guards Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today.
"In Ramon, we're excited to add a young, multi-dimensional guard, and with Ryan, we're adding a young, athletic center. We think both Ramon and Ryan are really good fits for this team. We're also happy to add another asset for the future with the additional draft pick," said Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant. "At the same time, we'd like to thank Sebastian and Delonte and wish them well in the future."
Sessions, 24, played in all 82 games (one start) during the 2009-10 season, averaging 8.2 points on a career-high .456 shooting, 2.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 21.1 minutes per game. His 3.1 assists per game ranked 8th among all reserves last season. Prior to signing with the Timberwolves before the 2009-10 season, the 6-foot-3 guard played his first two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. He posted career highs in scoring, assists and steals during the 2008-09 season, averaging 12.4 points on .445 shooting, 3.4 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.1 steals in 27.5 minutes per game in 79 games (39 starts). In the 39 starts, he upped his averages to 15.1 points on .444 shooting, 4.2 rebounds, 7.6 assists and 1.3 steals in 33.7 minutes per game. Sessions finished the 2008-09 season ranked among the league leaders in assists-to-turnovers ratio (8th at 2.97) and assists per game (18th at 5.7).
The South Carolina native set the Bucks franchise record in assists with 24 while scoring 20 points against Chicago on April 14, 2008, also becoming the first player in Milwaukee franchise history to have at least 20 points and 20 assists in a game in the process. Sessions scored a career-high 44 points on Feb. 7, 2009 versus Detroit and on 17 occasions in his career has recorded double figures in assists. In his three-year career, Ramon, pronounced "ra-MAHN", has averages of 10.0 points on .449 shooting, 3.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 24.4 minutes in 178 games (47 starts).
Hollins, 25, set career bests in nearly every statistical category during the 2009-10 season. The 7-foot center averaged 6.1 points on .558 shooting, 2.8 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 16.8 minutes per game in 73 games (27 starts). The 7-foot center scored a career-best 19 points on two occasions during the season (Nov. 25, 2009 vs. Denver and Jan. 29, 2010 vs. the Los Angeles Clippers) and averaged 9.2 points on .610 shooting and 3.7 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game in his 27 starts. Over his four-year career, he has averages of 3.9 points on .541 shooting, 2.2 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 11.6 minutes in 205 games (31 starts).
West averaged 8.8 points on .445 shooting, 2.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 25.0 minutes per game in 60 games (three starts) during the 2009-10 season. In 150 career games (93 starts) with Cleveland, he averaged 10.3 points on .450 shooting, 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 29.7 minutes per game.
Telfair, acquired by the Cavaliers on Feb. 17, 2010 from the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team trade, played in four games with Cleveland, averaging 9.8 points on .457 shooting, 1.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 19.5 minutes per game. Over his six-year career, he has averages of 7.9 points on .390 shooting, 1.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 23.6 minutes per game in 392 games (181 starts).

Love the Sessions aquisition...
He is much more of a pass first point guard than Mo Williams and will allow Williams to keep going in his Jason Terry form of a shooter (perhaps off the bench?)
Hope the Cav’s can help clog up that HUUUUGE hole at small forward though.
Also a note goes out to Ryan Hollins: REBOUND like a MAN!!!
An insanely athletic 7 footer that only averages 6 rebounds per 36 min? whats up with that?
C’mon man your better than that…
Jefferson was a hog, everyone knows that. And Love needed his, too. It was crowded there, and they were losing constantly and probably behind in games most of the time he was in.
And he is young, these stats are not gonna be his career averages.
Now he gets the chance to run and dunk and box out, and those numbers are there for his taking. He will get his.
I know absolutely nothing about this trade.
Im gonna take a shot in the dark and say the Timberwolves got ripped off again.
Scott or Grant said that they want Sessions as a SG- which mean Mo Is still starting pg.
Right now starting lineup looks
Mo-pg
Sessions-sg
Moon/Parker-sf
Jamison-pf
Varejao-center
Not my favorite lineup...
Let’s go
Mo – Boobie: PG
Sessions – Green: SG
Moon – Eyenga: SF
Hickson – Jamison PF
Varejao – Hollins C
I like that setup- nice athleticism in the starting 5. Parker we should trade to some team for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
I keep waiting for the “what’s the catch?” portion of this trade. Telfair was a throw-in from last year that we only kept because his money was guaranteed. Delonte we were planning to waive. I don’t see how Sessions and Hollins could possibly be worth less than nothing.
That doesn’t look too bad! But I am sure I am seriously deluded now.
I guess first step is to acknowledge your problem (Moon – Eyenga at SF).
And we would still be way too small with what you got. So that’s two holes.
And Parker has value, we can deal him for more than PB&J given time.
I think the catch is that Minn picked up the catch in the bargain.
But, still its an interesting and athletic lineup. Will be fun to watch.
parker
Hell he doesnt rate P&J sandwich, only peanut butter cuz he’s slow & always stuck on D. lol

Good Move
I likes!
So we have an extra first round pick and now a second rounder in 2013, that’s nice…
This is a good trade for the Cavs. They get better both in the short and the long term, get the best player in the deal (Sessions), a serviceable big man, and a draft pick to boot. I’ll miss Red, and I really wish him the very best going forward, but there was no way he was playing for the Cavs again; the Cavs really got something for nothing in this trade.
Hollins vs. Kufos
The original rumors about this trade were that we would have gotten Kufos instead of Hollins. I like this deal as is, but I think I would have loved this deal if we got Kufos instead. He doesn’t have the athleticism of Hollins, but he is much more of a pure scorer and has great range for a big guy.
Which 7 footer do you like better? Did you like the trade as is, or would you have liked it better if we got Kufos?
I suspect that the Cavs felt that Hollins fit the new up-tempo style better than Koufos.

I suspect Hollins was considered more of a known than the raw talent of Koufos.
Who knows, it might be contract considerations, too. But to me, Koufos is a bit of a project, with perhaps more upside than Hollins, but still requiring more time.
And that just doesn’t really fit in with where the club is now.
Like I said, I don’t really know anything at all.
And now that I ponder it, I bet WM is right on this one.
So, nevermind.
Verejao is the starting C right now. We’re looking at a back-up. The back-up center is usually just a big man who takes up space. Hollins’ big athletic body will be just fine for that. He’s only signed for 1 year, so he won’t handcuff the Cavs for any future plans.
I like the trade as is. I’m not much of Koufas fan, if Hollins can defend and rebound, he is a lot better than Koufas would have been. I don’t believe an uptempo offense needs a big man that can shoot.
the problem with him is bulk. He is a solid defender and has the wingspan and athleticism to guard most players in the post. However, he can get pushed round on D and fairly easily boxed out at times. If he can add bulk and work on this stuff, he could be a very good starter IMO. He is still a decent rebounder and defender because of his length however…better than Koufos.

How about Mo and Sessions as starters
and then Mo gets dealt for young talent slash draft picks at the deadline, and Sessions spells Mo going forward.
Hmm. A good ball-handling, passing, slasher. Sounds like something to work with…
I don’t think he can, its not his game. That’s what it seems like to me.
He seemingly has everything but that, I heard he only has good range to 10 feet.
So be it. 8+ assists per 36 works for me if you can combine that with the capability to penetrate regularly and finish or score at the line.
We already got lots of people to hit the outside shot.
The Price-Harper reference duly noted – and Hollins is Hot Rod ;-)
If the Cavs could either find a good SG either through trade or draft, it does not matter if Sessions can shoot from the outside. If he can slash to the hoop and distribute the ball, he will be golden.

I’m with you guys, I like it. Sessions if I remember correctly is a defensive upgrade as well, and he can take care of the ball. Scotts not getting sexy players, but the front office seems to be on board with this uptempo style of play that Scott wants. We might not have a superstar, but if we go with this uptempo style at least the Cav’s will be exciting to watch. Who know’s? Maybe someone on this roster will shine now that they are out of LBJ’s shadow.

I was thinking more like this:
Starters
Sessions
Parker
Jamison
Hickson
Varajeo
Super 6th Man Mo Williams
7th man Powe backup PF and transition C
8th Man Hollins Backup C
9th Moon backup 2 & 3
10th Gibson backup 1& 2
Play Mo, Sessions, and Parker 32 minutes a game for 2 spots.

+1 on Mo Williams being a Jason Terry 6th man!
Jamison as a SF? Intriguing…
I like Antawn, but if Kevin Garnett ate him alive in the postseason, what will quick SFs do to him?

I agree.
Plus, I have always felt Andy is better off the bench. for his career, Andy is a better overall player statistically off the bench in fact, and I didn’t even account for the fact that he started much more when he was a better player and the games as a reserve include most of his first 2 seasons.
I would like to see Sessions, Parker, Moon, Jamison, and JJ with Andy and Mo off the bench. I just don’t see andy as being able to defend SF like you, and I did like JJ starting at center.

JJ needs to clean the glass a lot better if he’s going to be the starting C.
by JulioBernazard on Jul 28, 2010 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions
true, but he really did a good job at cleaning the class during the 2nd half of the season (9 rebounds per 36 minutes…while Andy was grabbing 9.6). I would still like him to improve, but he has improved every season he has been in the league and has shown steady improvement, so I don’t see why he can’t. Plus, he did start at C a good amount in the 2nd half of the season when both Z and Shaq were out.

That’s when the Cavs came the closest to the get-out-and-run style that Scott wants them to play this year, right?
by JulioBernazard on Jul 28, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions
The Cavs need to sign Josh Boone for our starting center. If given the minutes, he could be the center that they are looking for.
I would hope they can trade Jamison to the Knicks, reportedly wants a stretch forward. I’ll take anything the Knicks would offer for Jamison.
That said, the Cavs definitely need to trade Mo, Powe, Jamison, Moon, and Parker for better young players and draft picks.
Curry and a second rounder for Jamison?

Why would New York kill their '10-'11 cap space for Jamison?
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
I still like Powe. He’ll return to form this season.

I never like when players get injured, or wish them to (unlike some particular people on this site), but this sessions pickup seems like an even better deal given that J. Flynn will be out for 3-4 months, and who knows how he’ll bounce back from this injury.
