Lesson Learned: Don't Mess with Cleveland Fans

Cleveland Indian fans chant and heckle a spectator wearing a LeBron James Miami Heat Jersey.

Cleveland Indian fans chant and heckle a spectator wearing a LeBron James Miami Heat Jersey.

If there was any doubt that Cleveland had some of the most dedicated, loyal fans in all of sports, think again.

A spectator who was sporting a LeBron James Miami Heat jersey drew the crowd into a frenzy in the sixth inning of last nights' Cleveland Indians game was escorted out of the ballpark by security personnel.

Hundreds of fans seated in Progressive Field's left-field bleacher section started chanting obscenities and pointing at the man in the sixth inning of last nights Indians game against the New York Yankees. As the man was escorted out of Progressive Field a number of fans followed him towards the gate as they began yelling more derisive chants and throwing debris.

Star-divide

Last night's incident is just another example of how Cleveland has some of the best sports fans in the world today. For decades we've made let it be known that we love our teams. We're there for them at their worst and we're there for them at their best. Yeah, we can get a bit rowdy but we get the message across. In this case the message being, DON'T SCREW WITH US.

Plenty of stupidity to go around here. Cleveland fans shouldn’t give attention-starved idiots like that the satisfaction of knowing that they’re getting to us. They know how douchey they are without us having to tell them. Stooping to their level is not justified. Stay classy, Cleveland, even when confronted by attention-crazed douchebags. Rise above, people, rise above. It’s not going to stop.

Not sure if I agree with this. I understand your point of “being the bigger man”, but from my standpoint this falls under loyalty to a city and a team. If we are complaining about LeBaby not being loyal and then we let some

attention-crazed douchebags
come into OUR stadium wearing that crap. That person deserves everything he has coming to him. He’s lucky the cops saved him and also lucky he wasn’t at a Browns game.

Indians fans didn’t treat any of the thousands of Yankees fans invading Cleveland stadiums and acting like Yankees fans like this.

Indians/Cavs fans also just didn’t have their hearts ripped out by the Yankees within the last month. Hell besides them just being a douche bag organization, the Yankees haven’t really done anything that bad to the Indians in years.

Comparing a annual contest between the Yankees and Indians and the LeBacle is ridiculous.

Also I’ve been to plenty a game at the Jake/Prog where people had shit thrown on them for being fans of the other team. When a bigger problem arrises your attention goes elsewhere. I am sure the Yankees fans were getting plenty these past 3 games.

Regardless of what’s happened, being so upset about a situation like what LeBron did to the point that you’d be willing to assault some lame-ass for being a Heat-wearing heckler is not an appropriate response. Period.

I would say the general consensus on this blog matches the feeling displayed last night towards that kid. But then again this is the internet where everyone can sit behind their computers and talk the talk.

by jsneides on Jul 29, 2010 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

And? There are many good reasons why “appeal to the majority” is a logical fallacy, not to mention a cop out.

I could care less if every responder was down with acting like a nimrod towards that jerk. I’ll still draw the line at assault.

by darkcorvus70 on Aug 1, 2010 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

To each his own. I thought it was great and would join in if I saw something like that happen.

by jsneides on Aug 2, 2010 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

while it may technically be assault, you know there’s a huge difference between throwing a hot dog wrapper at someone, and beating their face in.

I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.

Yankees fans entering the stadium are like someone walking in to a synagogue wearing a crucifix.

Someone walking in to any Cleveland event wearing a LeBron jersey is like walking into a synagogue wearing a swastika.

The guy was looking for trouble.

As far as “overreaction” by the fans, that’s just part of being a team. Would you berate all of the players on a baseball team for participating in a bench-clearing brawl?

by Spidey on Jul 30, 2010 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t quite go as far as saying it’s akin to a swastika in a synagogue, but I understand what you’re saying.

To me, it’s all about what this guys intent was. I guarantee he didn’t just throw that jersey on without a second thought. He wore that to deliberately draw negative attention to himself, to deliberately provoke and mock cleveland sports fans. It wasn’t like this was a cavs/heat matchup or anything like that where he could simply be supporting the team he likes.

It’s not even him just wearing it out to a bar or something. He wore it to a sporting event, in cleveland…a place he knows full well is going to be chock full of cleveland sports fans, who obviously are going to be more sensitive to it than john q public walking down the street. Regardless of how stupid he looks (and most likely is), with his sideways hat and jersey, he can’t be stupid enough not to realize he’s trying to start sh*t with people. (Im surprised the heat haven’t tried to contact this douche and announce publicly he has been offered free tickets to a heat game or something idiotic like that).

Should he be assaulted? Obviously not, and he really wasn’t. My friend was there one section over though and while he he got booed for the jersey…he was the one who decided to escalate things by a standing up and cursing and preening around holding up the heat logo in front of peoples faces.

He got no more or less than what he deserved.

I'm mad about LeBron leaving as much as anyone but this was ridiculous.

The dude is wearing a Heat jersey so he gets stuff thrown at him? That’s pretty immature of the fans at the game.

It would have been hilarious if A-Rod hit his 600th homer later that game and the douche didn’t get to see it, though.

He didn’t get stuff thrown at him simply because of the jersey. He responded to people booing by acting like an ass.

by johnnyphoenix on Jul 30, 2010 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

It doesn’t matter. If he’d thrown something himself to start off with, then I could see it. Otherwise, boo him and be done with it.

Yeah, the guy was being a douche. Who cares? No need to lower yourself below him.

Yes, because a non-violent jeer at the home-team’s expense is a justification for assault. Right.

Assault someone for being a heckler and end up in jail, lesson learned. Welcome to a society governed by laws. Leave your disproportionate response at the door.

by darkcorvus70 on Jul 29, 2010 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

you’re one to talk about disproportionate responses. throwing a hot dog wrapper, while it may still be assault, is not the same as hitting him with a bat.

Two things

1) Shame on the kid for bringing undue attention to himseld and wrath of a bunch of bitter people.

2) Giving people who are fans of the other team shit for being fans of the other team is stupidity. You should thank them for the added revenue of the ticket sales.

Giving people who are fans of the other team shit for being fans of the other team is stupidity.

So rivalries are stupid … um ok. Why even have sports?

by jsneides on Jul 29, 2010 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm talking about if the person comes to a game

They are there to support their team independent of you supporting yours. If they act like a douche, they deserve everything they get but people who find the need to yell at another teams fan just for the sake of it apparently didn’t get enough attention as a kid.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 29, 2010 4:58 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Wrong sport and not even one of the cities that were playing. Wearing a Knicks Jersey would have been acceptable. When you come to a game not supporting either team but there to be a general distraction, you deserve anything that comes your way. This is where he was “acting like a douche”.

by jsneides on Jul 29, 2010 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

And if he’d ended up in the hospital, would he have deserved that?

by darkcorvus70 on Jul 29, 2010 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

But did he? No. He had beer and peanuts thrown on him. I mean come on it’s not like this is a 5 year old and his favorite player is Lebaby. This is a grown up kid making grown up decisions. But I’m tired of fighting for my point here. We can agree to disagree.

by jsneides on Jul 29, 2010 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

No, he didn’t But you are the one who said “That person deserves everything he has coming to him.”, and as such, I’m curious as to where you draw the line.

A grown-up kid making a choice to be childish, and then the crowd obliges by being even more childish. That’s not class.

by darkcorvus70 on Aug 1, 2010 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I draw the line at fighting. I think fighting between fans is retarded. I’ve actually had a person on here want to fight me over a topic. Its stupid.

But like I said there was no fighting. So I’m not sure where you are going with this. Playing the “what if” game is retarded. It’s not a valid argument.

Like I said before the best thing that could have been done for this kid was not allowed to be admitted to the game. Under the stance that he was trying to incite a riot. The second best thing happened to him. Maybe he learned his lesson, but I doubt it.

The best thing about it is that this kid is exactly like LeBron. An immature kid looking for attention.

by jsneides on Aug 2, 2010 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

someone said earlier that the Yankees fans weren’t being jeered. That’s what I was referencing.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 29, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with your point. A few jeers here and there throughout the game is enough for an opposing team’s fan base. No need to get rowdy.

I think what this kid did was totally the opposite of being a fan … he was just being a douche and maybe next time he will think twice. Or maybe not who knows.

Really?? Really??

I cant imagine why someone would wear a Lebron James Miami Heat jersey in Cleveland. The fans reacted exactly how he wanted them to. He was looking for an over reaction. And it made him and the fans in that stadium look like jack asses.

by kujo24 on Jul 29, 2010 3:51 PM CDT reply actions

No when we threw beer bottles at the Jags game … that was looking like jackasses. The only people who look stupid here are the morons that thought this was wrong.

by jsneides on Jul 29, 2010 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

those officials deserved to be fired on the spot. that almost cost the browns there only playoff berth since 99.

by notthatnoise on Aug 2, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed … but that was something where if there is a line that I believe in … the fans that day crossed it. Cups of beer are a lot softer than plastic bottles of beer.

by McGeorge on Jul 29, 2010 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

Like others have said, when the guy put that heat jersey on, he KNEW what he was doing. Every action has consequences. If he wore a sun-dress to the game, he should know the consequences would be weird looks and homophobic comments. The consequences in this case where just what happened, and they couldv’e been worse. Everyone blaming the fans should take a step back. If you feel that strongly about it, wear a LBJ6 jersey to a Cleveland game and blog about how unfair you think you got treated.

College basketball just became more interesting...

A total D-bag move.

Yeah and now he’s talking about suing the stadium for making him leave. Again, I have no doubt Lebron or some heat rep will offer the guy tickets to the game when they come here to play the cavs.

by johnnyphoenix on Jul 30, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Game

Lebron and his fans must share a common trait, narcissism, Cause this dude was all about the attention. I was at the game, one section over from this guy. He brought everything down on himself. The crowd boo’ed him when he entered or got beer, but when him and his girlfriend started screaming at kids, tauting people to ‘bring it’, and then physically assaulting some people sitting around them is when people started thrown stuff at him.

by apod on Jul 31, 2010 10:05 AM CDT reply actions

So basically he got thrown out because he was acting like an asshole; not cuz he was wearing a LeBron jersey.

That’s good to know.
