A King No Longer - LeBron James Chooses Miami Heat

LeBron James has made his decision.  After listening to pitches from six teams LeBron James has decided to join Dywane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami with the Heat.

LeBron spoke of Miami being the best opportunity for him to win multiple championships.  Perhaps he is right.  What we can say, however, is LeBron James' global icon status is no more.  LeBron needed to build a team, and win a championship, as the greats in the past have.  He did not.  He chose to turn tail and run.

Something happened in the Boston series in which LeBron James decided he didn't want the pressure of leading a team.  LeBron James is not MJ, he's not Kobe, he's not Bird or Magic.  LeBron James is a complementary piece on another great player's team.  Perhaps that is what he wanted all along.

"King" James?  Nope.  "The Chosen One"?  Hardly.

Am I bitter? No, and I mean that.  I am mad at myself for thinking LeBron James was something that he obviously is not.  That's on me.

Stay strong, Cavaliers fans.  Use this opportunity to come together - the REAL CAVS FANS - that bleed Wine and Gold.  Come together and support Dan Gilbert, Chris Grant and Byron Scott as they rebuild this franchise.

An era has come to an end, but every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.  The Cavs will be back.  I believe.

Thats what LeBron just did. He bumped off Art ### Modell. You have to be a truely cold, heartless SOB to do something like that.

Another thing...

How on earth does James grow the balls to throw a pres conference to kick his home city in the gut, the city that has given him EVERYTHING up to this point? This is as unforgivable as it gets in the sports world. I hope he never gets welcomed back and eventually understands what a horrible thing he has done to this city.

The NBA is structured to allow teams mobility. Oklahoma City went from 23-59 to 50-32 in one season. One draft pick, Kevin Durant, helped make that possible.

With an adept GM, Cleveland can still be competitive.

I hated your team and that guy for the last 2 years for all the hype that surrounded you, and believe me, I was peeing myself when we knocked you out of the playoffs in ‘09. But also as a Magic fan, I know the hurt that comes when your franchise player gives a big F-U to the team and city, bolts for brighter lights and a bigger city, and then watch that player win multiple titles that he could have won for you(Shaq in ’96), and we didn’t even have the misfortune of watching said player completely turn it off in crucial playoff games. I was hoping that guy would stay with you, to treat us to more epic Cavs-Magic battles, but oh well. On this day, Cavs fans, I feel for you, and I wish your team and city all the best.

All three of those guys are jerks

I am all for a couple of all stars playing together and putting together a team to win, but I am against teams like the Lakers, Celtics, and now Heat buying three all stars to win champion ships. All it does is eliminate competition from the NBA and destroy the game. I knew Lebron had no class, but really thought he wanted to EARN a championship. Who cares if those douches win now? It is like when the Celtics got the “big three”, or Lakers got gift wrapped Gasol, it doesn’t make them a great team, it means a bunch of losers had to buy themselves a championship. This isn’t taking a little less money so the team can sign a veteran, this is literally all three of them paying their money for the championship. It is preposterous and NO team deserves to be able to do this. Thanks to all three of those douche bags for trying to ruin the game. I wish you all the worst of luck, and I hope that if there is justice in this world, none of you ever get past the second round again in your careers.

I’m a Hornets fan, so I know from experience. Scott’s only good when he has a star player running the offense, and since the Cavaliers no longer have a star, he’s useless.

I don't think I will watch the NBA anymore

The refs’ bogus calls at critical moments, teams buying championships instead of building teams to win, three to four teams that can win while the rest don’t have a chance…this isn’t the game I grew up playing and love so much. This is a cheap mockery that is tainting my love of the sport. I am a Magic fan, and this makes me so frigging angry, so I am sorry to all the Cav’s fans for this debauchery.

Subject lines are superfluous. They’re not needed.

See? I can post without using them. Mostly, they just break up your first sentence (like above),and actually make it more difficult to read. Consider a thread that has 300 or more comments, with the screen font varying from bold to regular, bold to regular. It looks like a lot of noise.

I can only speculate what it did in the locker room.

as a basketball fan this is exhilarating. It’s gonna bring the most hype to the league since Jordan. All 3 of those guys are class acts. Someone up top stated that Cleveland did so much for Lebron, how could he betray you guys like this? I’d argue that it was the opposite. He did so much for your town. You guys were actually relevant for 7 seasons. So the man wants to win. Would any of you have made a different decision? He tried to bring you guys a title, but your incompetent GM could never build him a truly championship caliber team. Blame your organization. One man can’t do it by himself. Don’t blame Lebron. You should instead thank him for all the memorable years he gave you

Without LeBron, with the trade exceptions, tradeable assets and other players available.

There’s at least 35 wins in there. LeBron made a lot of his team mates look WORSE than they truly were. Jamison? Shaq? Big Ben?

If Kobe doesn't make his teammates better, how on Earth does Adam Morrison have two rings!?

It's too bad the Cavs/Magic rivalry was never able to grow.

Can we all agree now that LeBron has no class? Not shaking hands when losing was just a hint of who he really is.

Too bad. Here’s hoping that the Heat implode over it’s own weight. I never had anything against the Cavs… but never liked LeBron (your team also added Shaq last season, and that never helps).

From a Magic fan, who know how it is to see a franchise player betray everyone, I’m sorry for you guys.

The worst part of all this

Is all the work the Cavs did to give Lebron a cast, making that awful trade for Jamison to give him another scorer, but the only one who didn’t deliver was Lebron. I know he was injured, but if he was healthy then the Cavs probably win. So why the hell did he leave because he said his teammates didn’t give him a chance to win? From what I saw, he was the one that couldn’t bring it…if he had signed anywhere else, I would have understood, even Chicago. But tucking the tail between the legs and going to Miami just proved he wants an easy ride and no competition. All my years playing basketball, and the competition and winning the game for my team were the best parts of the game. Who are these people we pay to play basketball in front of us?

I don't think Miami will win as much as people say.

Their fourth man is going to be the only player more likely to go on a drug binge this off-season than Delonte West or Josh Howard. They have little money left, and LeBron admitted it himself, they don’t have a winning team yet. I don’t think that with the market as crazy as it is for FA’s, players are likely to take less even if it is to play with three great players. I mean, Darko got 20 million for christ’s sake!

LeBron leaving like this is narcissistic and self-fulfilling.

But I think even he said it, the NBA is a business and they must be crapping their pants knowing three star players are in a big market. The league just suffered one of the worst playoffs I’ve ever seen so I bet they were begging for this to happen. It’s business before loyalty and it’s unfortunate it happened to you guys.

I like the Cavaliers a lot, but regardless of LeBron’s theatrics I don’t think management did enough to help him (and subsequently the team) win a championship. Jamison is as close as they could come.

This story would look a lot better if Wade hadn’t won a ring at all and they won their first title together. Instead it looks like both Bosh and LeBron are in it to win it right away no matter where they have to go.

by johnnyphoenix on Jul 8, 2010 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

i'm sorry but WHAT?

You do realize that the last NBA finals to get this much tv ratings was back in 1996 with Jordan right? Or was it 1998? Either way, this line is outrageous:

“The league just suffered one of the worst playoffs I’ve ever seen so I bet they were begging for this to happen.”

Maybe for you it was the worst since your team lost, but for ratings and the NBA, it was a very high point. Celtics vs the Lakers in a game 7? It doesn’t get any better than that! Not to mention Kobe vs the guys that killed him 2 years prior? The last 2 champions going at it for the 3rd? I can go on and on.

It was a great playoffs and a very highly rated one as well.

by plyka on Jul 8, 2010 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Not a Cavs fan. I'm just a neutral observer.

Ratings wise playoffs were down until the Finals happened. Name me 10 games this postseason decided by 3 points or less.

You can’t name any, right? Because we didn’t have 10 games that close! So many blowouts, so many boring, anti-offense matchups. Our first overtime game was Game 5 of the ECF. That’s a joke.

The Hawks/Magic was an embarrassment, essentially so was the Cavs/Bulls because Chicago was hardly in that series.

The Dos Equis guy wishes he was Brock Lesnar.

by SSreporters on Jul 9, 2010 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Look, i've had beef with a lot of Cavs fans because

you guys all protected the guy. I’ve been saying this for 2 years running now, the Cavs have an EXCELLENT team even without Lebron. The author of this website continued to protect Lebron at the expense of the other players on the team, saying that it was all the supporting cast’s fault and not Lebron’s. He is/was WRONG.

Lebron’s style of offense is not what wins you games. Don’t get me wrong, he does get his stats including a lot of assists. But just a lot of assists (meaning 7,8, etc) doesn’t mean you are making your teammates better. Especially when he gets to the playoffs, all this guy does is dribble around for 15-20 seconds and then attempt to attack the paint. Don’t get me wrong, he is great at it, but this doesn’t provide much help to the other players on your team.

The Cavs have a great team, and next year without Lebron, they will show what they are made of. I’m not a Cavs fan (even though you guys hate my team the Lakers). I mean, not really a Cavs fan, and i’m not trying to give you guys pity, but i actually think that the Cavs will make it to at least the 2nd round of the playoffs next year.

And Lebron made a tragic error going to Miami. If i were him it would be Cleveland or Chicago. In Miami his legacy is going to be destroyed.

im not gonna give condolences

cuz i think thats stupid, it is just basketball after all. lebron chose the easiest way with the least amount of responsibility to go win a ring (maybe), and i cant say im too surprised. whereas i though NY would be his choice based on promoting himself, i didnt really realize what a coward and unfit leader he truly was. if anything you guys should be happy, you are no longer tied to a guy that will never LEAD his team to a ring. (that team is dwades, no matter what people may think now). you now have the opportunity to find a leader, and a star willing to shoulder the load and win it all, because honestly, lebron was not that guy, and his decision today proved that.

besides who are they gonna sign as role players now? kwame brown? good luck. thats a three man team, even when the big 3 went to boston they had posey, and a young rondo, and house, and other role players. who does miami have? 3 big stars, and nothing more, and no money to sign a good bench…

Just like I said would happen last year

HAHA Cavs fans actually thought he would stay. But it is better for your team in the long run. Lebron James is a black hole of a basketball player and the Cavs losing him gives them a chance to build a team the way its supposed to be. With 5 players that complement one another. It will take you several years of Lottery picks to recover however. And this isnt just mean spirited talk, as a Magic fan I have already lived this when Shaq did the same thing to us…
