NBA Franchise Tag Speech
Hello all, I am a student at Colorado state University and am puting together info to make a speech on a possible NBA franchise tag.
I am tryng to go outside the box a bit with sources and I am conducting a Poll on this blog, Denver's blog, Toronto's, New York's, LA's and Miami's to get 3 lower market teams and their fans imput as well as 3 higher market teams and their fans imput. Also, if you run accross any articles you may find usefull please post them in the comment section. That would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys for your time and the more that I can get to vote, the more credible my poll is.
Now on to what you're voting for. My franchise tag plan would be to reward every team with one franchise tag a year. Each time a player is franchised they are franchised for 4 years. The franchise doesn't even kick in until after their rookie contract is done. After that the team can franchise them 1 more time for another 4 years thus meaning a superstar player will play out his rookie year plus possibly another 8 years (all at max level money) with the team that drafted them unless the team decides to trade or not sign the player. After serving 8 contract years as well as 3 rookie contract years for a total of 11 years with one team, then the player earns his right to go wherever he wants.
That is my plan and it basically brings relevence to more than just 6 teams, hinders the players rediculous amount of power in the league and makes it a much more even playing field. So I ask you to answer my poll question and leave any questions of comments in the question section as well as any links. I give my speech on Wed 4/20 and will hopefully have it ready to post a week later. Thanks all for your time... it is greatly appreciated.

I honestly think this is a horrible idea.
Forcing a guy to stay for 11 full years? I could even see if it was a one or two year thing but that is just ridiculous.

you are entitled
to your opinion but I think players have way too much freedom and a franchise tag would keep the league more competative and bring the players back down to earth. The reason it’s so long is because if you just get one then a player will leave when he is 26 just like Bron Bosh and Melo…

As much as I would love to agree with this...
I can’t. I would, however, tweak it a bit.
1) How about each team has one Maximum Franchise Tag that stays into effect for four years, but only after the Rookie contract is completed. The only thing about using something like this is that each team should only be able to have one of these in effect at one time. If each team is able to have one per year that stays in effect for four years, then the salary caps would get blown up and the NBA would have many more players who are undeserving of a Max Contract. Believe me, players (and agents) will hold teams hostage with this and get traded anyways.
2) I would remove what the Maximum Contract definition really is in the CBA. I would change it to “15% of the team’s Total Salary or the Salary Cap, which ever is higher.” I would also make a change to the current CBA to limit the amount Max Contracts on each team to two. This way it is against the by-laws to create a “super team” with three max contracts e.g. Miami. Also, any team with two max contracts can only have the third highest paid player with a maximum of 10 % of the team’s Total Salary or Salary Cap.
These moves could save the NBA from possible contraction.
I like all your ideas
But my speech can only be about 7 minutes and its hard to get that deep into it. This is just a very broad approach so far. Basically my belief is there are about 2 max contract players in the league per team. SOme teams have 3, some have none. Hopefully a franchise tag would balance all of that out. I might also include a hard cap in the new CBA for my speech thus making mega teams even harder to create.

7 minutes is a long time...
A hard cap is bad for the NBA. Teams that are being competitive the right way would lose out on their own talent if that is the case.
Why not do your presentation on how to resolve the CBA for the NFL?

because
I enjoy the NBA much more than the NFL…and 7 minutes sounds like a long time but it’s really not.

I agree with you that a hard cap and a franchise tag are good for the NBA
but how much is a max level contract? The franchise tag in the other leagues like the NFL and the WNBA only allow for one year deals with a lucrative salary. I could see this stretching to two years perhaps, but a franchise tag for four years is almost like holding the player hostage especially if he doesn’t want to play for a certain team.
As with a hard cap and a hard floor, it will level the playing field from top to bottom, but if it’s going to work in the first year of its implementation, there needs to be a combination of salary rollbacks, AND a one time exception for buyouts which won’t go against the cap. Also, a specific player cap must be defined, because the current CBA doesn’t have such a figure set in stone.
Good luck with your project.
