Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

Alec Burks

Everyone has been talking about the #1 pick, its pretty obvious we will go with Kyrie Irving. But what about #4? In another fan post, a poll showed many people voted for Enis Kanter. I think we are overlooking other options, Kanter has made it obvious that he wants to play in Washington by skipping interviews with other teams. Do we really want a Ricky Rubio situation? Besides, Kanter has played below-average competition for over a year. He does not seem to have a good attitude, and also i may be stereotyping a bit here, but he just screams DARKO MILICIC to me.

Now lets look at another option, 19 year old Alec Burks. Playing in the Big 12 he scored double digits every game except for one when he hurt his knee. This kid is 19 just like Irving, and in a draft severely lacking star potential, Burks is 6'6 with tremendous upside. Most draftboards have him sliding to around 10, but remember, Kobe Bryant was drafted 13th. He led his team in rebounding as a freshman and was second in scoring at 17 per game. Lets face it, we are weak at shooting guard. We are more established at center with Varejo and Hollins and other young talent. Kyrie Irving and Alec Burks will kill it together for years to come. Thoughts, comments? this is my first Fear the Sword post.

Kanter is way different than Darko Milicic...

This guy’s offensive game is very polished. He has a smooth jump shot and can post up. He doesn’t seem to be getting the “soft” moniker like Nowitzki has. Not to say that I wouldn’t want to have a Dirk Nowitzki on my team because he could be my 4 any day.

He is almost like a stretch 5… Is that even a real term? I’m coining that now if it isn’t! DIBS!!!

not knocking kanter

i meant that we have really only seen him play overseas, and his talent may be exaggerated just like darko’s was, is what i meant

Rubio was under contract with a Spanish club and living in Spain when the Wolves drafted him. Kanter is not under contract and has been living in the US for the past year. How are their situations similar?

not saying kanter wouldnt play, im saying rubio is not interested in playing with the TWolves, and Kanter does not have much interest in playing for Cleveland, His preference is to play with the Wizards is what i meant

by Lukas M on May 21, 2011 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

i think he would play with us

he interviewed with us, if he didnt want to play with us then he would have skipped our interview like the Twolves one

by ChewyFL on May 21, 2011 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions

This is a key point. It seems like Kanter has no interest in going to Utah. It would be a huge gamble if they go with Kanter; Kanter only accepted Utah’s interview at Chicago and would allow Utah to scout him at his other visits at Washington and Cleveland. That has to be a huge red flag for Utah. Besides I’m thinking they will go PG at #3 and then best player available with their second lottery pick.

I do think Burks is a good player

However, I’d be much more comfortable trading to acquire a later pick to grab someone like Brooks from Providence. I read an interview in which Kanter said that he wanted to play with Cleveland as well. He is good friends with Semih Erden (also from Turkey) so that would be a draw for him to join the Cavs. The only way we would take Burks is if we traded the #4 pick and moved down to a the 10ish range, anything higher would be a pretty big reach for a guy with obvious shooting deficiencies.

My SG board:

Marshon Brooks
Klay Thompson
Alec Burks
(Klay and Marshon very close)

My draft:
#1: Irving
#4:Kanter(if gets to us)
#15-20: Klay or Marshon(Buy back into first round)
#32: Parsons
#54: Diebler

by ChewyFL on May 22, 2011 10:11 AM CDT reply actions

I hope we would go after Chris Singleton...

if we can buy back into the 1st Round. This guy is under-the-radar. He is really something special on defense and has a decent corner shot.

by Tiny iZ Boss on May 23, 2011 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions

i dont think he is a building block

i think he is a piece that makes a good team great but IMO to early in rebuilding for us to pick him. I think a contending team should fight like hell to get him. IMO

by ChewyFL on May 23, 2011 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I could agree with that...

but he is better than any 3 on the Cavs already. Not many players coming out of college are great perimeter defenders, but this guy will only get better at this.

by Tiny iZ Boss on May 26, 2011 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

thats true he is better than our 3s

but i really like Brooks, he has been quietly compared to Kobe(one of those ppl is Kobe’s trainer)
his negatives are :
-Didn’t get his teammates as involved as should have(team sucked)
-Not great 3point shooting(already really improved)
-A tad cocky(got nothing for this but Davis would prob put him in his place)

Also i know its taken with a grain of salt because it was only workouts but reports said he was easily getting to the rim on everyone even on singleton. Plus works really hard, has a 7-1 wingspan and rebounds(7 RPG senior year)

Of course really hard because Singleton would come in and be a instant wingstopper

by ChewyFL on May 26, 2011 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

to be the main scorer on a team you need to be cocky.

I dont know anything about this guy because I really dont follow college basketball, so this is just a general opinion. You need to have confidence that youre the best person out there and can do whatever you want on anyone.

People seem to really like Valanciunas. I havent seen as much of him as I have of Kanter, but if Kanter is not available at 4 he may be an option. Also, if Kanter is not there then that means Knight still will be. Picking Knight at 4 wouldnt make sense for the Cavs but someone interested in Knight may make a good offer for the rights to select him.

agreed

some teams will prob pay pretty good for Knight

by ChewyFL on May 27, 2011 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

williams

and if he is gone also(which i highly doubt) then take Lenord if dont get a good trade offer

by ChewyFL on May 22, 2011 1:56 PM CDT reply actions

I really hope they get Kanter at #4. He seems like a player the Cavs desperately need and a good pick and roll player with Kyrie Irving. I have some doubts about Irving but if everything checks out with him and there is no trade in the works at #1, Irving will have to be the guy. I also like Brandon Knight but at this point he would have to interview great and have very impressive workouts to leap frog Irving as best PG and top overall player.

by FreddieC on May 24, 2011 10:01 AM CDT reply actions

Kanter/Burkes/pick #4

this post was about Burks (who’m I really like) yet comments address Kanter (who I would question why we want/need). I like Irving at #1! That gives us 3 pg on roster all of whom can play (i.e. 1 too many- trade Davis or Sessions!). So, at pick #4- why do we go for another center- again, we have 3 on roster of which 2 have no trade value (Andy’s a keeper!, Hollins a question mark with little value, and Erden I don’t have a clue about). Our NEED is for a 2 and a 3!!!!! Unless (and here I have a lot of hope for Grant and Gilbert) we have 1 or more trades coming, lets get some scoring in place- take Brooks or Burkes as a 2, or best shooting 3 available (I thought I saw where at least 1 of the european pf was actually more a sf???
By the way- Go TRIBE! Cleveland sports on the come back trail!

by CavsfaninDenver on May 24, 2011 3:30 PM CDT reply actions

my point exactly

lets get some sccoring on the wings

by Lukas M on May 24, 2011 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

No need at C? our starting center is good(not elite) and aging and most likely wont be around in 5 years(even tho ill be sad he wont retire in CLE) and our backup is just that a career back up at best and Erden, who knows if he will even be healthy enough to play a full week. Your right we need to get rid of one of our PGs with Davis’ contract it will be easier to trade sessions(also sessions is valuable-ish right now) plus Davis is a great teacher for Irving, never thought i would say that! I totally agree our biggest needs are SG&SF but right now we can add 2 building blocks for the future with Irving and Kanter. After them everyone is a possible good player(plus kanter some). Now calm down a bit because we can should get Parsons and Diebler in second round if worse comes to worse(I know not much help at all but who knows, maybe there the tom brady of basketball). Also we still have Sessions/Jamison and TPE all most likely will be dealt. With that we can jump back in the first round to get Burks/Brooks/Klay or Veteran SG&SF.

We cant fill all holes in one year, rebuilding takes multiple years

by ChewyFL on May 24, 2011 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

You kind of answered your own question. Why draft another center? If Hollins has no value, then he has no value to the Cavs either. Same goes for Erden. This team needs more than a few pieces. The biggest need for the Cavs is talent, no matter the position.

by rockemsockem on May 25, 2011 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree the Cavs do in need some wing players but there is no wing players worth #4 pick. Just like we don’t need a PG because of Davis and Sessions although we will be drafting a PG anyway for the future. You can apply the same case at C. Varejao is not a C, he is PF that should be coming off the bench. The rest of our centers on the team are back-ups. Thus we need a C for the future. If the reports are right, the Cavs might be interested in buying a late round pick, maybe we get our wing player in Klay Thompson or Marshon Brooks and maybe draft another one with the second pick in the second round. I heard the Raptors might be interested in trading their pick and looking for a veteran that will immediately help them. Supposedly Raptors have longed for Varejao, maybe the Cavs might be interested in trading Varejao for their 1st round pick giving us another lottery pick where maybe then they can draft Burks. Also I’ve heard they would love to use their TPE to get another lottery pick.

by FreddieC on May 24, 2011 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

I would not trade Andy V only for a late lottery in this draft

I think we should stay with our current 4 picks there in good spots(our D-league is gonna be awesome next year). I would be ok with jumping back into the first round for one of the SF or SG. Other than that i think we should use Jamison, Sessions, the TPE and if needed the second round picks to get some first round pick in 2012 or 2013 or trade for a veteran Cuz were already gonna have a pretty full roster next season.

by ChewyFL on May 25, 2011 8:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it is most liely that if we deal the TPE, it will involve a first rounder next year.

We already have 4 picks this draft, and I know we even may buy back in at the end of the first round. That would be 5 picks. No sense in picking 6 players this season.

This draft class is fairly weak, although we should do ok at #1 and #4. Next year’s draft should eb loaded with big guys (Sullinger, Barnes, Jones, the other NC kid). If we can score another lottery pick for next season, we should do it. Even if we don’t pick high in the lottery next year, with the depth at the top of the draft, quality players will fall to the middle of the first round.

We draft 4-5 guys this year, another 3-4 next year and I believe we have Miami’s #1 pick in 2013 as well, so we could be adding 2-4 more playes that year as well. If we keep stocking up future draft picks (something Ferry rarely did) we can continue to influx young talent to make up for free agency losses and draft picks that bomb out.

by talonk on May 25, 2011 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Never thought about that but they could use TPE to get a #1 next year.

by FreddieC on May 25, 2011 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree we need to next years draft

we are gonna run out of spots for players this year(if we dont trade anyone) we already have 10 guaranteed salaries next year. IMO 2013 should be the last year we try heavy one the draft after that is we need ppl get some trades with our future picks.

by ChewyFL on May 25, 2011 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Just like to clarify that I don’t believe they are going to have 4 lottery picks, simply put there are rumors that the Cavs would love to acquire another lottery pick and would love to use the TPE to get a young impact player rather than just to use it to use it. Who knows maybe the Cavs could get Andra Iguodola or Rudy Gay or Danny Granger for the TPE and the 4th pick.

by FreddieC on May 24, 2011 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

In this case...

My preference goes…

Rudy Gay – 24
Andre Iguodala – 27
Danny Granger – 28

I’m pretty sure Granger is going to be dealt to Minnesota in a deal that includes the #2 overall pick. Maybe we could wrestle that pick away Indiana a little bit easier than Minnesota.

glad to see lots of interest here

I agree with FreddieC completely! Yes; andy IS a pf; just one more of the many we have on roster. If and to me it’s a big if- Kanter can come in and start at center, I’d say great- lets get him. Hollins adequate back up, Erdeh unknown! I’d love to see Andy back at the “4”- but now- who losses playing time? JJ has shown me enough to warrant staying as a starting 4, Andy too valuable for only 15-20 minutes/gm, and yea; we have a very expensive Antwan sitting at the 4- and NONE of em can move to the 3 position! Would love to see Antwan traded (for the value, and for his sake!); if anyone would take him for mid-late 1st round pick, that would be awesome. Then we could get a pg, center, and either/best of sf or sg for the future! Me- I’m willing to load up on young players, let em grow together and suffer thru another marginal (but entertaining) year to end up as a true contending team in 2-3 years (which I suspect is as long as the “super teams” (Heat, etc) have in em.

by CavsfaninDenver on May 25, 2011 9:16 AM CDT reply actions

Varejao is a center. He’s one of the best defensive centers in the league and has MUCH more value to a contender than to a rebuilding team. IMO, he needs to be traded to someone like Portland or Atlanta?

I second that…so many people have said that he is more valuable for a contender. I would trade him…try to get a first round pick or a wing player with upside.

by FreddieC on May 27, 2011 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

IMO Burks is the best right now SG

but both Klay and Brooks have higher ceilings(brooks higher than klay). they just need a couple years to come to there potential hmm right around when we should be good.
