Potential Trade/Draft Scenario

This is mostly to drum up some more talk on this site and hopefully a lot of you particpate. I'm personally tired of seeing "poloks" trying to sell Internet TV through a FanPost. Dude, that is uncool. is there any reason why he isn't banned? Anyways....

Star-divide

I have been hearing lately that there trade rumors involving certain players with loaded contracts. Certain names come up such as Monta Ellis, Andre Iguodala, Kevin Martin, Andris Biedrins, Rudy Gay & Gilbert Arenas. You can almost assume that if take on one of these contracts that you'll receive 1st Round compensation for taking on the extra salary unless the talent equals or outweighs the value of the contract. This is the case with Iguodala, Ellis and possibly Martin.

There is one name that I have not heard a lot because of the massive amount of his contract. That man is Rashard Lewis. The guy is due almost $46 million over the next two years. I know that tends to scare a lot of teams away, but I think Cavs GM Chris Grant should take a look a this as possible "high risk/high reward" type of deal. If you really think about it, then how much money would be involved with expiring contracts in 2012 if Lewis were acquired? The answer if you include Baron Davis' expiring contract is........ $38 million. That is huge. Washington would have to throw in the #6 overall pick in this year's draft and possibly another future pick. Cleveland could throw Antawn Jamison's expiring contract at them for the potential of a buyout. The deal would look something like this....

Washington gets

Antawn Jamison - $15 million

Daniel Gibson - $4 million

Ryan Hollins - $2.5 million

Cleveland gets...

Rashard Lewis - $22 million

2011 Washington 1st Round selection (#6 Overall)

2013 Washington 1st Round selection (Top 5 protected)

Cleveland would be picking #1, #4, and #6 in the 1st Round plus two 2nd Round selections. Ramon Sessions can be moved for another 1st Round selection. This could possibly be a future pick. We could potentially get Kyrie Irving, Enes Kanter & Kawhi Leonard in one fell swoop.

Our team's rotation could look like this going into next year...

PG - Baron Davis / Kyrie Irving

SG - Christian Eyenga / Manny Harris

SF - Rashard Lewis / Kawhi Leonard

PF - J.J. Hickson / Samardo Samuels

C - Anderson Varejao / Enes Kanter

Yes, but I would tweak the deal and try to squeeze more out of Washington.

No. We have better options than that.

i dont like it

I don’t think this draft is strong enough for that. Next years pick would be nice but tufts assuming its a high pick. I would much rather get a sg like iggy who can help more.

The early picks in the draft may be worth it if we can trade one of them.

Such as sending that #6 overall pick and Daniel Gibson to Philadelphia for Iggy. I would not say no to that deal. Iggy is a defensive veteran that could thrive with a Baron Davis on this team also.

so

Davis/Irving
Iggy/Harris
Gee/eyenga
Hickson/Jamison
Andy/kanter

See if jamison can be traded for a sf and we have a solid team.

i just.realized jmaison for lewis was the whole.deal.

Davis/Irving
Iggy/harris
Lewis/eyenga
Hickson/samuals
Andy/kanter

If lewis plays decent and we get solid bench play that’s a team that could push for a.playoff spot.

Depends on the salary cap

If it ends up being a hard cap i don’t think we would be able to do this. If it stays the way it is now, Dan will prob easily shell out the extra money to do this if we would get that much.

Where do you think Sessions could go? i think the Knicks are out, but I have been saying the Lakers would like him.

I've thrown the Lakers name out there before....

LA Lakers, Portland, New York, Orlando (if Jameer gets dealt), and Charlotte are all destinations where I thought he could go. I’m pulling most for Charlotte because I want that #19 overall selection.

I dont think he is a popular as before

because he wants to start where ever he goes. So I think Lakers out and Orlando out before it would be same situation as before Nelson trade unless sessions on bench but then he wont be happy

He could start for the Lakers over Steve Blake

I don’t think that Derek Fisher is going to be there much longer.

I am suspicious

b/c he hasn’t done anything since being busted for violating the leagues steroid policy. Also, I don’t think he can guard shooting forwards, he’s more a PF type. If we’re gonna deal jamisons contract, lets at least get an upgrade from jamison.

by iwearmocs on Jun 12, 2011 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

I didn't say

Lewis has always been a bad player, just that right now, and since he got busted, he hasn’t been any better then Jamison.

I think the Cavs should trade Sessions to the Jazz for their 12th pick, then grab the best SF or SG on the board.

Ramon Sessions for 3rd overall + a 2nd rounder?

You’re sure about this right…you do remember who they traded away to acquire that pick right? Only one of the best PGs in the league in Deron Williams? I don’t think Utah would give up the 3rd overall and a 2nd rounder for Ramon Sessions but hey maybe I’m missing some inside joke or exaggerated sarcasm.

Indeed I was including the 4th Overall pick

You must ’shrooming or something, dude.

Utah gets:
2011 #4 Overall Pick
Ramon Sessions

Cleveland gets:
2011 #3 Overall Pick
Utah 2011 2nd Round pick

We could even give the Jazz Daniel Gibson for all I care. He is $4 million bench warmer.

It looks like the Cavs might miss out on both Kanter and Williams unless they do move up, which may not matter if they truly do like Valanciunas better (I doubt that they do). Your scenario looks like a good one. Do you have any ideas on how the Cavs can get 1 or 2 more 1st round picks (through trade or using the TPE)?

by NM Dawg on Jun 15, 2011 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Well.. Since you asked!

Detroit gets:
Cleveland’s TPE

Cleveland gets:
Rip Hamilton
2011 Detroit 1st Round pick (#8 Overall)

or

Milwaukee gets:
Cleveland’s Trade Exception

Cleveland gets:
Corey Maggette
2011 Milwaukee 1st Round pick (#10 Overall)

Or Dan Gilbert can actually purchase one at cash value later in the draft and nab Jeremy Tyler. This guy is totally underrated.

Responding to both your trade ideas in one post

Why would Utah swap picks for Ramon Sessions when they already have 1 under-sized point guard in Devin harris on their team? And on top of that they’d have to give up a 2nd rounder just to get him?

and with regards to Detroit, those rumors have been put to rest for some time. There is no way Detroit gives up their 8th overall and Rip just for cap relief especially when it actually doesn’t clear up enough cap space in today’s CBA to go after any of the big name free agents.

Dumars is being given 3 years to turn the team around so it makes no sense to give up the opportunity to draft someone this year given Rip’s final fully guaranteed season is this upcoming one. The original 3-way trade rumor with Minny that came out would have been more palatable if we were getting say Anthony Randolph and/or their 20th pick in return.

by The Boourns on Jun 16, 2011 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Well...

Utah has been shopping Devin Harris and Sessions would be a cheaper option. A third team can always be added to any one of these deals. It’s just extremely hard to forsee that so I don’t mention it.
If Orlando were to get involved in a deal with Utah it could look something like this…

Cleveland gets:
2011 Utah 1st Round selection (#3 overall)
PF Paul Millsap (rumored to be moving him)
SG Quentin Richardson
PF Brandon Bass

Utah gets:
2011 Cleveland 1st Round Selection (#4 overall)
2012 Orlando 1st Round selection
SF Antawn Jamison (Buyout)

Orlando gets:
Ramon Sessions (rumored to want him)
J.J. Hickson (Unnecessary if we get Millsap)
SG Raja Bell

The money makes sense if you include the value of the drat picks.

Utah winds up saving money (apprx. $13 to $20 million) and adding more picks by moving one pick backwards. They would still draft #4 and #12 overall and have cleared a roster spot for Derrick Favors to start at PF.

Orlando gets an upgrade at PF in Hickson and can move Jameer Nelson to allow Sessions to start. I’ve heard that they are also trying to move Arenas again.

Cleveland would gain a key post player in Millsap and a backup in Bass. We’d have an actual starting caliber SG in Richardson. These moves clear the way for Cleveland to draft Kyrie Irving #1 and Enes Kanter/Derrick Williams #3. I assume that it would be Kanter because Minny would snag Williams.

Cleveland’s new roster would look like…

PG – Baron Davis / Kyrie Irving / Daniel Gibson
SG – Quentin Richardson / Manny Harris
SF – Alonzo Gee / Christian Eyenga
PF – Paul Millsap / Brandon Bass / Samardo Samuels
C – Anderson Varejao / Enes Kanter / Semih Erden

Eventually, Irving & Kanter would step up and be starters.
