Retiring #41

I've seen comments about Gilbert potentially retiring Dirk Nowitzki's number, and want to pose the question to Cavs fans (I am a Dallas fan).  I know the concept seems a little ridiculous, but consider the following:

 - Lebron would have a reminder of his greatest failure in the rafters of two opposing stadiums.

 - Why not celebrate Lebron's failures a little more?

 - Miami is the only team to retire a number of an opposing player (Jordan) to this point.  In a way, this factor could be an extra thumb of the nose in the Heat's direction.

(poll after the jump)

I'm not arguing this absolutely must happen, I just wanted to make some points and ask for your thoughts.

Also, how do you expect the Cleveland crowd to greet the Mavs next time they visit (hopefully will happen this coming season)?

Should Cavs retire Dirk Nowitzki's #41?
Yes, the next time the Mavs play in Cleveland.

Yes, but after Dirk retires.

Only if he beats Lebron in the Finals again.

I like the idea, but don't think it would be appropriate.

No.

I say no

As much as I like celebrating Lebron losing, thats just to far. And as far as when the Mavs come to Cleveland they will probably get more cheers than the Cavs get during the intro.

I would only if he beats Miami in Finals like 3 or 4 more times

Nah, that’s a little to childish. Dirk and the Mavs will receive a ridiculous ovation when they come to Cleveland next year though.

Agreed.

It’s rather petty.

Calmer than you are.

Seriously?

No. Why? I like Dirk, he’s a good basketball player, probably one of the best all time and def the best euro ever, but really? Jordan maybe. but cmon, lets not be that petty.

I think in certain cases, you should be able to retire an opposing player’s number, but this isn’t that case. Its right to retire Jackie Robinson’s number in baseball.

your whole argument is a fallacy!

Cleveland isn’t Dallas. You guys didn’t win anything. Some city 1,180 miles away won the Championship and the Cavs had the 2nd worst record in the NBA.

Does Cleveland plan to continue piggy backing off Dallas when Dallas wins the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup? How about if the Rangers win the World Series?

Dallas won the Championship. That city celebrates a deserved winner. They were the better team than Miami. Good for Dirk and Co. Good for Cuban. Good for the Cavs? Hardly.

And the Cleveland Mavs stuff? Wow! Guess you guys haven’t let that absurdity of that hit you. It’s embarrassing and pathetic. Just like Gilbert’s many rants.

The Lockout bores me.

Ima kings fan

And I agree with this statement. Dan Gilbert, let it go!

You would think someone saying “Cleveland Mavs” would offend Cavs fans. I know if someone came around and called us the Sacramento Pistons just cuz the pistons beat our rival the lakers some time ago, id be utterly offended. We are the Sactown Kings, just like you guys are the Cleveland Cavs.

Congrats on Dallas winning the ring, Miami shouldnt be given a ring period. Go out there and earn it the hard way like Dirk has. Lebron cries when he loses, Dirk practices harder and longer.

Sacramento Kings, Oakland Raiders. Best teams everrrrrrr
