It's a commonly held belief that the Cavs will trade Andy at some point between now and this season's trade deadline. This begs the question "who/what should they look to acquire for him and what are the realistic options?"
It's a tricky question to answer now because the Cavs still don't really know what they've got. And they also don't know how they fit into the recently shaken-up pecking order of the eastern conference. That's why i suspect we won't see any movement on this front until mid-season when both of these things will come into focus. Moreover, the performance of other teams will determine what the market is for AV's services although a player of his caliber will always be in demand.
However there is obviously the matter of the starting small forward position, the backup PG, and the hole that would be left in the front line by dealing Andy. As previously stated, the Cavs may wait and see how the current roster shakes out so that they can better understand which of those needs is most urgent and worth addressing with their biggest trade chip.
I'm pretty split on which way the Cavs should go. I do think they should trade him, as he will be in the winter of his prime by the time the Cavs are ready to truly content, and his value will probably never be higher than it is now. But i also don't want to get pennies on the dollar for him and I don't know if there are any players out there who we would target that the opposing GM would be willing to part with.
Please let me know in the comments what you believe the Cavs' strategy should be with respect to Varejao, calling out specific teams and players to the extent you can.
Thanks
