Cavaliers Notes: Anderson Varejao Out for Weekend Games; Samardo Samuels Sent to Charge

David Richard-US PRESSWIRE

Anderson Varejao won't be able to play this weekend. Samardo Samuels is being sent down to the Developmental League to play with the Canton Charge. One of these news items genuinely affects the Cavaliers chances of beating the Atlanta Hawks and Brooklyn Nets.

Tonight is Wild Thing Wig Night at Quicken Loans Arena, but unfortunately the Wild Thing won't get to make his mark on the actual game. According to Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal:

Anderson Varejao has been ruled out for games tonight and Saturday with his bruised right knee, but coach Byron Scott doesn't believe the injury is more serious than initially believed.

Varejao has already missed four games with the injury and now won't face the Atlanta Hawks tonight or the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.

I feared this would happen when the Cavaliers had plane trouble yesterday leaving D.C. and couldn't practice; Byron Scott doesn't let guys play who haven't had a full practice. I am not sure if that is exactly what is keeping him out of action this weekend. I do know that it would have been very nice to have Anderson Varejao against Al Horford and Josh Smith tonight.

Also going on in Cavalier-land today is the shipping of Samardo Samuels down to the Canton Charge. Samuels has been pretty bad in limited minutes this season, and it doesn't bode well that this is happening at a time when the Cavalier's front court depth is nonexistent. If there were ever a time that Samardo Samuels could be helpful, it would be now. And he isn't. Now he will go to the land of Gody. From Cavs.com:

The Cleveland Cavaliers have assigned forward Samardo Samuels to the Canton Charge, the Cavaliers exclusively owned and operated NBA Development League team, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts.

Samuels has played in 18 games (one start) this season for the Cavs, averaging 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.9 minutes per game.
