Kyrie Irving And Tristan Thompson Both Named To NBA All-Star Rising Stars Roster

There's no question that Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Kyrie Irving would be named to the 2012 NBA Rising Stars roster. Fortunately for the Cavs, teammate Tristan Thompson will be attending as well as one of nine first-year players selected by NBA assistant coaches to participate in this All-Star event.

In the past, the game featured the NBA's top rookie and sophomores going head-to-head but this year the league is changing things up. The selected players will be in a pool and then "drafted" in playground fashion by "general managers" Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley.

TNT's Kenny Smith will serve as the honorary Commissioner and Ernie Johnson will host the live Rising Stars Challenge Draft on Thursday, Feb. 16, on NBA TV at 7 p.m. ET. The game itself will be televised live nationally on TNT at 9 p.m. ET.

For more on the stats that earned Irving and Thompson their first trip to an NBA All-Star event, see the press release on the Cavaliers web site. The full Rising Stars roster is available after the jump.

The “draft” will be fun to check. Just for fun, this is my draft order for an actual NBA style game (with defense) if played next week and assuming everyone’s health:

Griffin
Irving
Cousins
Rubio
Monroe
Fields
George
Turner
Hayward
Wall
Leonard
Splitter
Brooks
Morris
Williams
Walker
Thompson
Knight

List was made completely on the fly with only stats used off the top of my head and fully admitting that there are a few guys on here that I’ve watched very little of. I could definitely be swayed to make changes. If I’m being a little bit of a homer with Irving, I made up for it with Thompson so low. I contemplated putting Thompson as high as just behind Wall.

I think George goes third after Griffin and Irving. I think Wall and Rubio will go higher. Rubio might go ahead of Irving just because it’s a fun event and people just want flashy passes and stuff that Rubio can do.

Monroe should be higher! And I bet Blake is pissed he has to play in this.

Does anybody else get as angry as I do when I hear more about Rubio’s 4 point, 1 assist night than I have ever heard about a Kyrie Irving game… ever? ESPN needs to show him some love.
