Many comparisons have been drawn between Drummond and a handful of players. To some, he could be the next Dwight Howard, yet others expect him to join the list of notable big man busts including Kwame Brown and Hasheem Thabeet.
Conrad wrote a great article about Drummond that showed similarities between him and Dwight Howard. This article encouraged me to find another big man that has physical traits like Drummond and Howard from a pre-draft perspectice. Turns out DeAndre Jordan had nearly identical pre-draft measurements.
Here are some numbers:
Howard: 6' 10'', 240lbs, 7' 4.5'' wingspan, 35.5' vertical, 7 bench presses, 11.21 lane agility, 3.14 court sprint
Drummond: 7' , 279 lbs, 7' 6.25'' wingspan, 33.5' vertical, 10 bench presses, 10.83 lane agility, 3.39 court sprint
Jordan: 6' 11'', 250lbs, 7' 6'' wingspan, 30.5' vertical, 8 bench presses, 12.30 lane agility, 3.27 court sprint
To me it seems that Howard and Jordan somewhat roughly provide Drummond's ceiling and floor respectively. This leaves me confused as to why Jordan was taken so low (in the second round) while Drummond is projected to go so high, given such similar physical traits. For those worried about Drummond's FT shooting, Jordan shot .385 and .375 in his first two seasons before reaching a .525 best last season. However, Jordan hasn't progressed at the pace that Dwight Howard did, obviously.
Do you take the risk at 4 or even 7 (assuming a trade with Golden State)? Like a lot of others, I don't know. But Jordan sounds like a much fairer comparison that Kwame Brown or Hasheem Thabeet.
