Hope springs eternal with the beginning of another season of Cleveland sports. Our Cavaliers are getting hype from all over the country, and the leaders of the franchise are insistent that they are playing for the postseason. Gilbert says you can take it to the bank. That’s all well and good, but the players are the ones who need to accumulate enough wins to make the playoffs. And there are plenty of questions about how those players will perform.
Who are the most important Cavaliers for this season? How healthy will these players be? Who will continue to develop, and who might take a step back? Who will fit with Mike Brown’s system, and who might be shackled by it?
Questions like these would be difficult to answer for any team, but they are particularly intriguing for a team like the Cavaliers that has such a unique blend of youth and checkered health records.
This unpredictability is one of the main reasons that I wanted to write this series (described below). I also thought it would be cool to collaborate with a couple of the other fans on FTS, so I asked Alex (eraulli) and Chris (clevyxc) if they would be willing to join me in breaking down the immediate importance of each player on the Cavaliers’ roster, and they graciously agreed.
We then drafted who we thought were the most important Cavaliers (and who we wanted to write about), and got right to work writing these posts up for you all as a sort of season preview. These posts are primarily concerned with which Cavaliers are most important for this season, but we will also include some comments on how we see each player fitting into the Cavaliers’ long-term plans. We will also include some rationale for why we selected each player in their particular spot. Finally, we will be releasing these posts in reverse order, twice a day leading up to the number 1 most important Cavalier for the 2013 season. Spoiler Alert: His name rhymes with Schmyrie.
So anyway, I hope you enjoy these posts and that they get you even more excited for what promises to be the most exciting Cavalier season since we lost Shaquille O’Neal to free agency and were forced to start a three year rebuilding project.
Note: With apologies to Carrick Felix and Matthew Delavavvvadodova, we will only be covering the 12 most important Cavaliers, since we were unsure who would fill the last few roster spots.
Another Note: Chris had to back out of this project, so Alex and I both picked up two posts. We wish him well.
