And with the number one pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select.....(we all pause) David Stern's mouth opens A-A-A-Anthony Bennett. Bill Simmons is on the ESPN panel almost having a stroke. For those who know exactly who the kid and watch College Basketball are buzzing with excitement, because we know what he can do, but never in a million years would we have guessed he would be a Cleveland Cavalier.
I remember texting my mate (who is a Lakers fan and doesn't know of a universe outside of the Lakers, had never heard of him before that day) and he is hounding me, telling me we wasted a pick, and i am trying to defend Bennett because deep in my stomach, this pick just felt right. And at that moment i realized, that Cleveland and Bennett would be dealt with criticism for weeks, months if not years. But here we stand, just four games into the season, and never would i have imagined that it would get to this stage.
From the day Bennett put on that Cleveland Snapback, it has been one thing after another. I've heard it all, from "He is fat and out of shape", "He is too slow to play 3, too small to play 4", and even "This is the worst pick in NBA draft history" and to be honest, i expected it from people like my mate, but never would i expect to see some of this stuff coming from our own Cavaliers.
Bennett's skills should NEVER be in question, anyone who watched him at UNLV should know this. The problem is his confidence is shot! I can see it when he goes up for a jump shot, his face shows nothing but worry, that he knows he is going to be ridiculed heavily if he misses it. Posted on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, every online forum and yes even this one, is doubt, and hate towards Bennett. How can a player excel if this is what he has to face this? When some (and let me make that clear SOME, not all), his own supporter base is calling for him to be traded only 4 games into his career, it would be hard to excel.
I would like to Congratulate Bennett for trying to clear this problem, and he has gone "Ghost" on social networking to avoid the hate. https://twitter.com/AnthonyBennett/status/397568652389543936
