NBA Trade Rumors: Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers discuss Andrew Bynum for Pau Gasol swap

USA TODAY Sports

News broke Tuesday morning that discussions have began between the Cavaliers and the Lakers to see a deal that brings Pau Gasol to the Cavs.

This morning ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne reported that talks have begun between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers to trade four time all star Pau Gasol to Cleveland in exchange for Andrew Bynum as well as other assets. By trading for Bynum it would save the Lakers over $20 million in salaries and taxes.

Pau Gasol is currently averaging 14.7 points per game and 9.4 rebounds a game on 44.6% shooting. He's having a bit of a down year partly due to being asked to do to much on a squad short on talent, but he's still a tremendous player that would be a great fit for the Cavaliers.

In return for Pau Gasol the Lakers are looking to receive at least one asset of some value beyond the flexibility Bynum's contract would provide them.

The Cavaliers have reportedly also engaged the Chicago Bulls in separate discussions to trade for forward Luol Deng. Such a trade is unlikely as the Bulls are reluctant to move Deng, due to their belief that they will resign him in the off season.

Trading for Pau Gasol would not have a negative impact on the Cavs cap flexibility beyond this season. Gasol is in the final year of his contract, getting paid $19 million for his services. By quickly playing with the trade machine it's clear that the Cavaliers would need to move around $7 million in salary on top of Andrew Bynum to acquire Gasol.

Personally I wouldn't want to see the Cavs part with any of their first round picks over the last three seasons to acquire Gasol. But given the Lakers need for a point guard maybe Jarrett Jack and a pick could be included in the deal in exchange for Gasol and one of the Lakers small forwards.
