Byron Scott fired: Cleveland Cavaliers fire head coach after third losing season

USA TODAY Sports

The rumors have been swirling for weeks now. Today, the team finally made it official: Byron Scott has been relieved of his duties. The head coach will not be back for his fourth season with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have fired Byron Scott.

After weeks of rumors and speculation from various media members, the news has finally leaked and it appears as though the Cavaliers' head coach is now the Cavaliers' former head coach, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

The team confirmed the news shortly after Jason Lloyd reported it.

Prior to the 2012-13 NBA season, the team picked up Byron's option for the 2013-14 season. He is owed over $4 million next year, but apparently Dan Gilbert has no problem paying him that while hiring a new head coach.

Make sure you check out what the Fear the Sword crew has had to say about the possibility of firing Byron Scott over the past couple of days.

Coach Scott was hired following the 2009-10 season and took over the team in the wake of LeBron James' departure. The Cavaliers went 64-166 in three seasons under Scott. Over the past few weeks, it seems as though his relationships with the players -- specifically Kyrie Irving -- and members of the front office have deteriorated rather quickly. When you combine three terrible seasons with poor chemistry, the result is a fired coach.

We'll have much more on the decision to fire Byron Scott and his possible replacements in the next few days. But for now, I offer my thanks to Byron for taking a tough job, handling it with class, and representing Cleveland well. If he chooses to coach again, Byron won't be unemployed for very long -- I assure you of that.
