Why aren't we talking Howard?

[first time posting; please forgive something that may be more "my wish list for this offseason" than "well thought-out logical analysis of why Dwight Howard will want to come to Cleveland".]

Other than the obvious fear that "no big free agents will ever come to Cleveland", why aren't we talking about the possibility of Dwight Howard this off-season? If he doesn't go back to the Lakers we can offer just as much as anyone else. If Howard wants to give himself the best opportunity to win, Cleveland is a pretty attractive offer. Right now as it stands our team next year:

PG: Kyrie Irving

SG: Dion Waiters

SF: Alonzo Gee

PF: Tristan Thompson

C: Anderson Varejao

Bench: Tyler Zeller

Add a guaranteed top-6 pick in the upcoming draft, along with picks 19, 31, and 33. As long as Chris Grant is around we have no idea what the Cavs will do with this draft; no one had Thompson, Waiters, or Zeller on Cleveland's radar before their respective drafts. And we have no idea what will happen this offseason with free agents coming and going, so from here all we can do is speculate. The early consensus for this years draft seems to be to go get our C or SF of the future, with Nerlens Noel and Otto Porter being the top C and SF respectively. Right now it seems unlikely to land Nerlens without the number one pick. Otto Porter however is a possibility, even as late as #6, and from what I've seen Otto Porter would be a great fit with this organization. Personally I really like Victor Oladipo if he can slot in at SF too.

As far as our free agents go, like most I really would love to see Wayne Ellington back, and the early word is that Cleveland would like to keep him for the right price. The rest of Cleveland's free agent plans are completely unknown right now. I like Shaun Livingston backing up Kyrie for 18 minutes a game; I think he sees the court really well, is a more than capable distributor, and his length sometimes causes trouble on defense. CJ Miles for 2.5m next season isn't bad, and if nothing else he's probably good enough that some contender would be interested in his expiring contract next trade deadline. If pretend Cleveland get their SF of the future, and keep Ellington, Livingston, and Miles; we could be looking at a team that looks something like this:

PG: Kyrie Irving

SG: Dion Waiters

SF: Otto Porter

PF: Tristan Thompson

C: Anderson Varejao

Bench: Shaun Livingston, Wayne Ellington, CJ Miles, Alonzo Gee, Tyler Zeller, and probably at least one more rookie.

Now back to Dwight Howard. Why would he want to come to Cleveland? What do big men like Howard traditionally want to play with? Shooters who an hit an open shot when he kicks it out, like Kyrie Irving, Wayne Ellington, and on the right nights Waiters or Miles. Big men like someone that can get them the ball where they want it, and Irving, Vareajo, and Livingston will be all capable of that. It's also nice to play with someone that can help clean up the boards like Tristan and Andy. And I keep hearing how Howard needs to play with someone who can create their own shot, especially in end of game situations, and we have Kyrie and Dion for that. But why else would he come to Cleveland though? Dwight Howard knows exactly what he's getting with Mike Brown, and their relationship didn't seem too bad. And Dwight takes A LOT of criticism in Los Angeles, and that's hard for anyone, even millionaire athletes. In Cleveland not only would he get a fresh start, but he would find a city that would embrace him. Put aside any negative perception you may have for him for a second. He would be the biggest free agent signing in Cleveland professional sports history. He still appeals to the casual NBA fan. And at his best he was a kid that had a lot of fun and really enjoyed playing basketball. Cleveland would love the guy. And you know what I'd REALLY like about this? We might actually get to keep Andy, use him as a high energy off the bench guy, and cut back his minutes too help get him through a healthy season for once. So really is there a better fit out there for Dwight Howard?

tl;dr: if Dwight Howard wants to win he should really consider this:

PG: Kyrie Irving / Shaun Livingston

SG: Dion Waiters / Wayne Ellington

SF: Otto Porter / CJ Miles, Alonzo Gee

PF: Tristan Thompson / Anderson Varejao

C: Dwight Howard / Tyler Zeller
