This post is more generalized NBA draft chatter, not specifically regarding the Cavaliers, because even if the answer to the title question is "Yes", I still do not believe the Cavs should take him with the first overall pick, because his injury history is worse than Noel's and Len's, as well as the fact that the Cavs would be drafting a PF when they don't need or drafting him to play out of position. I'm more interested in the general consensus out there about his ability to play the small forward position on a regular basis, in general, not specifically for the Cavs. I'm sure most people think he could do 'spot' minutes in a team's 'big' lineup, but that's not what I'm asking either. Essentially, does his offensive potential outweigh the defensive liability he would be if he played small forward?
Bennett's offensive game is considered extremely versatile, with the ability to shoot extending to the 3 point line and an ability to post up smaller small forwards. But the general consensus is that Bennett would not have the lateral quickness to defend small forwards adequately. We've seen some scorers in the league who are defensive liabilities but still maintain a starting gig in the league. But the question will be whether he's projected as a good enough scorer to overcome those defensive shortcomings.
