I read a Bleacher Report article about whether Marcus Smart cost himself money by going back to school. I think by the time the evaluations were done Smart would have widely been considered the vaunted Best Player Available by the time draft day came, especially in today's NBA where versatility & ability to be a "combo guard" is so valued. So did he cost himself so money? Maybe. Even in next years deep draft, Smart is will still be the best PG available and will still be highly sought after. It will most likely comes down to teams needs and fit.
Who did Smart cost the most by deciding to return to school? It just might be the Cavs. Sitting at #1, the Cavaliers already have their point guard of the future who just might be one of the top 3 PGs in the league. They also spent a high draft pick in the 2012 draft for a combo guard. So for the Cavs the fit wouldn't have been there. But what would have happened is that some team would have wanted to give up something valuable to trade up to the #1 spot to get Smart. The Cavs would have likely been able to get there man a little bit later and acquire more assets. So when people talking about whether Smart cost himself by going back to school, I'll always believe he cost the Cavs more.
