Now that the suspense of the draft is over and with free agency beginning tonight at midnight, it's time to discuss what free agents the Cavs should pursue. Depending on where you see Anthony Bennett
& Sergey Karasev
fitting in, there are needs at back up PG, back up SG, SF & back up C.
The market at SF is pretty much boom or bust. Josh Smith
is widely considered the premier small forward on the market and will seek a max contract but will probably come up a little short unless some team takes a flier on high hoping to limit his inefficient shots. While I liked the idea of Smith, a lot of people don't like his inefficiency and now I feel like he's too similar to Bennett. In fact, I would argue that Smith could be Bennett's "ceiling", although Bennett will never play defense at SF as well as Smith does. Andre Iguodala
is just about the only other SF that would classify as an above average starter. I think Iggy is undersized for the 3 and is a better fit at SG. While he is 6'6", he's under 200 lbs. and can be bullied in the post by the likes of LeBron & Melo. I also think Iggy will be overpriced and is also pretty inefficient. Iggy opted out of his $15 million dollar contract for next year, so I assuming he's looking for at least that much which is too much. I don't think there is anyone else out there I would be excited about starting at SF. It maybe better to just platoon Karasev & Gee and play Karasev when we need shooting and play Gee when we need defense.
While Karasev can play SG as well, I think we still need a SG to back up Waiters, preferably one who is proficient at three pointers to contrast Dion's slashing/driving ability. I'm not opposed to resign Ellington at the right price. The market again doesn't have a lot of solid backup out there. Guys like OJ Mayo & JJ Redick will be looking for starting gigs.
At PG, again, resigning Livingston may be the best bet unless he can command more from the market than the Cavs think he's worth.
Who do you think the Cavs should pursue in the Free Agent market?
