During our 2nd Fear the Podcast, JRowan (Justin) led a group of 4 other guys: NonDairyKreemer (George), WitMi (Mike), BenMiller (Ben) and myself (also Ben.) What you are a reading is essentially a collective thought process from the group. This was written to give you a rough overview of what transpired at a particular segment (for those of you who aren't as into the podcast thing...or who are interested in specific segments.) You may notice a theme were certain ideas are rehashed based on stuff that's already been said here. That should come as no surprise because...we've already done some of this.
What do we really think of Anthony Bennett? Bahahahahah This is, yet another, exercise in futility trying to come up with an actual consensus. JRowan couldn't have come up with a more diversified group of opinions on this one. Ben Miller actually loved the pick. I was less than enthusiastic. At 6'7 and 240lbs (for his playing weight) he (Anthony Bennett, not Ben Miller) is extremely athletic with an impressive wingspan. His height may not be ideal for the PF spot, but his length is adequate for it. As a SF, his athleticism might not be quite as good, but combined with his length and he has potential to be a more than adequate defender. Of course, watching Boris freaking Diaw cover Lebron against the Spurs (with some help) and slow him down those first 4 games gives one hope for Bennett (in the right situation) to be OK.
Offensively, WitMi (resident realist...who many would call a pessimist...but I say is positive he knows Bennett will suck at D) believes the kids skills will translate. (It's hard to find anyone who thinks he won't be able to score...and I've looked.) However, defensively, we probably have a huge problem...and it really is hard to find anyone who thinks the guy will be at least an average defender. (Which makes me wonder, is he just a shorter Dirk Nowitzki? Alright, terrible player comparison...but I don't care...I mean I've already heard Barkley and Malone's name tossed out there. Larry Johnson too. Forget that mess...he's a foreign big man who can shoot. I'm going for a short Dirk.) His length means he should be a factor in disrupting passing lanes. Unfortunately, the kid has shown little effort or technique on the defensive end. Technique can be taught (though it's best to have at least something rudimentary to build on before you get in league.) Effort is personal...and playing time is really the only card that Coach Brown has to get that out of him. (Well that...and he has Tristan Thompson...) If Bennett truly is going to be a PF...he should trying pulling a TT and growing a couple of inches. (Because...we can do that, you know. Just randomly grow two inches. Unless you have Asian blood. All of that ability was taken away and given to Yao Ming so he could play in the NBA. So, Kendaru, you'll be short forever. Sorry bud.)
Instead of having him play the 4...why not risk him at the 3? I mean if he can't defend...does it actually matter what position he plays? Would it not be better to actually have him on the wing (where he won't likely get pushed around much) and you can have a pair of bigs behind him to cover for his defensive deficiencies...as opposed to being one of those bigs covering down for our wings?
Of course, expecting rookies to do well on defense is probably not your best plan as a coach or a GM. Even Anthony Davis struggled mightily on defense last year (though he did at least give solid effort.) Unlike NDK (who thinks he can rationalize the Bennett pick by the time the season starts) I'm on the WitMi plan of 'show me."
I suspect a consensus won't be reached on him for a couple of years. Of course, by then, we'll have hindsight.
