NBA Free Agency: Houston Rockets agree to deal with Omri Casspi

USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Rockets are having a huge offseason. First they got Dwight Howard and now they've signed another free agent.

Dwight Howard going to the Houston Rockets was one of the best moves made by a GM this summer. But Daryl Morey did not rest and simply got back to work after landing the superstar center. Once Dwight Howard committed to the Rockets, Morey then proceeded to somehow top that move with another great move in free agency: The Houston Rockets have agreed to terms on a 2-year deal with former Cleveland Cavalier Omri Casspi, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The legend of Daryl Morey continues to grow.

More seriously, this is not very big news. The Cavaliers acquired Casspi in a deal that sent J.J. Hickson to the Sacramento Kings two years ago. The Cavs also received a heavily protected future 1st round pick from the Kings. That pick is top-12 protected in the 2014 draft.

In his two seasons with the Cavaliers, Casspi was not very good. He was the starter at small forward initially, until losing his job to Alonzo Gee. In his two seasons with the Cavs, he averaged 5.9 points per game on 40% shooting. He had a PER of 11.7 and never seemed to improve from his fairly impressive rookie season in Sacramento.

With Houston trying to build up the rest of their roster around Howard and James Harden, it makes sense for them to go after cheap role players. Casspi fits that description and I believe that he does still have some potential to be a solid player down the road. But I'm not going to blame the Cavs for not wanting to pay him several million dollars to find out if that potential exists. I'm totally fine with the Cavs letting him walk.
