I know we are all starting to get a little frustrated with the lack of activity from the Cavs, in what was supposed to be our furious off season scramble to ensure we are a playoff team. We have seen the biggest names (Josh Smith and Dwight) come off the board without so much of a mention of the Cavs. What's more, Smith went to Detroit, possibly shooting them ahead of us in the race to rebuild (though they have been at it a little while longer than we have).
Meanwhile, our other competition for Eastern Conference Extreme Home Make-Over Rebuild addition, the Wizards drafted blog darling Otto Porter and made a nice little move by nabbing Eric Maynor. So what gives? We have reports of players taking less money to go else where. CG tossed us ANOTHER curve-ball by picking someone who plays the same position as many of our favorite Cav. Is this rebuild Armageddon?!?!?!
Here's the deal, I don't think Grant and Gilbert really care what we think. And while that may suck right now, trust me... it's a good thing. Gilbert is an all or nothing owner, he doesn't want 6 seeds and an occasional playoff upset. He wants championships.
If we are honest with ourselves (and this is tough because we love our guys so much) - even in a best case scenario: Kyrie puts up 22 and 8 efficiently and plays average defense, Dion becomes a relatively efficient 18 ppg bulldog and handles a chunk of ball handling duties, TT reaches the 15 and 10 status we all hoped for (while playing major plus D) and Anthony Bennett is an inside-outside scoring machine who can't be guarded by single defenders on most teams - even in this case, this is not a championship roster. Sorry, it's not. You think that team beats the Heat? Even Chicago with a healthy Rose?
This is where Grant comes in, and the brilliance that is his patience. Does signing Josh Smith for 4 years make us championship contenders... nope. Does Asik? Sorry. Iggy? Not a chance. We know where CG's head is at: Kevin Love, LaMarcus Alderidge, Al Horford - pair any of these guys with Kyrie and we are on the path. He's not going to make a move to put your butt in a seat, and it seems he has Gilbert's permission to behave this way.
So as of today, is it possible that Washington and Detroit are now ahead of us in the playoff picture? Maybe. But that's not where Grant wants this thing to end. When he finds the move that he and Gilbert think will make this team a contender, we'll know it. Is it possible that the dreaded 2014 is our best chance at this? Ugh, maybe... Meanwhile, hold tight and trust the the man. I'm glad he doesn't care what I think.
