First off....Go Cavs! I will always have hope and pray for the day you guys get better. (Also, I purposefully left out any and all stats...)
I think the current situation of the Cavs is the classic case of picking friends over results. We should've long ago noticed that Mike Brown is NOT an offensive coach. Lebron literally carried that team by averaging 30. Point guards don't average 30 so with Kyrie, having to have the game-plan to spread the wealth, Mike Brown is dumbfounded.
Kobe made Mike Brown look half-way competent as well. Because he can go for over 30 any night when the offense is stagnant. Otherwise, Mike Brown's offense is literally geared to one player averaging 30 and the supporting cast getting hot on random nights.
REMEMBER THE DEATH STARE
But the Cavs, Gilbert/Grant, are "friends" with Mike Brown. They had a decent pool of Head coaches to choose from, but they chose to go with their "friend" and this is the result. Stagnant offense, confusion, having seven assistants, players are lost.. It's literally annoying to watch. I believe that he DOES have a defensive touch..I really do. Offense? Not at all. And everything looks pathetic right now. Very.
This is business. Those two never mix.
Chris Grant and Dan Gilbert's relationship. Dan gilbert even befriended Oladipo on Twitter before the draft. I think Gilbert WANTED and SAW the talent within Oladipo. But his friend Chris Grant, decided to say "I trust me and this Bennett kid". Now look at the situation. Bennett can barely get on the floor and he in generally looks lost sometimes when running up the court. He looks half asleep in his eyes and his mouth is hanging open...He just looks lost.
Meanwhile Oladipo has shown both flashes of Defense and Offense. Is he the best player this year, in this class, so far? I would say it's 1a and 1b with him and MCW. But still the Cavs wasted a pick because Gilbert "trusted" his "friend".
This is business. Those two never mix.
Thirdly, and Finally...
Kyrie and Dion. These two have tried to co-exist. They really have. They seem to be "ok" with each other at times but more often than not, not. Dion is almost too aggressive to be on the side of Kyrie. Bradley Beal, with his cool and calm demeanor, would work much better. Klay Thompson and McLemore would as well. If these players miss a play or get called for a foul, they don't scowl at the refs and begin pouting. Dion is unhappy but yet the Cavs organization is banking that these two can kiss and make up and make things better.
They can't and they won't. They are at war right now. Dion wants to be the best SG in the league..but playing on the side of Kyrie has gotten him demoted to the BENCH. If you don't think that irks Waiters, you have something else coming. Dion has a chip on his shoulder and it's the worst kind...against one of his own teammates.
Add in the relationship between Kyrie and Thompson, then you have jealousy. The veteran leaders Jack, Andy, and Luol seem almost "sheepish" to say anything so they don't take sides. But Grant and Gilbert are banking these two will work it out and be friends on the court.
Friends over business. Friends over results. Those two never mix.
With that being said, it's pretty clear that several things need to happen and they can't necessarily wait until the offseason.
Get rid of Dion Waiters now while you can. If you want you can package a Gee/Karasev/Bennett. But they need to get either a Center or a Two-Guard. Cj Miles has shown he can start and deserves to be on this team so he can start OR come off the bench. Moves to make:
- Mike Brown can wait until the offseason as to not blow up the ENTIRE operation right away. (I think they should take care of him now too, though)
- End of the season take care of Chris Grant.
- I would give a long look to PJ Carlisimo, George Karl, McMillian, Avery Johnson, or a candidate in those areas.
- Get a good GM and pray for a good draft.
- I wouldn't bank on Lebron, but there are other options. Luol suffices if he chooses to stay around. (I don't see this though, I see him in LA after Melo goes to Chicago)
Regardless...I hope they work it out so this dude can resign and we can turn towards some good times in Cleveland. I think Kyrie and Tristan are two good building blocks. Waiters was supposed to be one of them...but he isn't. With Bennett it's too early to tell in my opinion.
