Earlier today, there were rumors that Dan Gilbert's letter from 2010 could have prevented LeBron James from signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, in his piece in Sports Illustrated today announcing his return, LeBron said that he had talked it out with Gilbert:
"I've met with Dan, face-to-face, man-to-man. We've talked it out. Everybody makes mistakes. I've made mistakes as well. Who am I to hold a grudge?"
Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski has some of the early details of that meeting.
LeBron James, Dan Gilbert, Rich Paul and Maverick Carter met for 4 hours in Miami last week and talked through it all, Gilbert tells Yahoo.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) July 11, 2014
You will recall that there was a lot of speculation that Gilbert flew to Miami on Sunday night. Gilbert said that he wasn't on the plane, Jason Lloyd reported that he wasn't on the plane, and Woj said the meeting was "last week," which means that it may not have happened on Sunday night.
But I will forever choose to believe that Gilbert was on that plane after all.
UPDATE: Gilbert was on the plane!
In his story for Yahoo about the meeting, Wojnarowski wrote, "Gilbert had flown down on his private jet on Sunday for the most important meeting of his billionaire business life."
So there you have it. Dan Gilbert was not just sitting in his backyard on Sunday. His private plane was not just conducting "regular business" in Florida on the weekend of the Fourth of July. It was carrying Gilbert to meet with his former player, so that he could convince him to come home.
