Congrats on the pending Lebron signing. It's a really good story. As a Wolves fan, I can understand the concept of an overlooked midwestern franchise and I love the LeBron came home to a team that's not in a glamour city or traditional free agent "destination."
It seems there's a lot of Cavs sentiment to roll with Wiggins and youth. I understand the lure of a guy like Wiggins. The athleticism, the potential. Those are the things that an annual lotto team like my Wolves hang our hats on. It's just so tempting to go with that best case scenario for Wiggins where LeBron mentors his quick rise to superstardom and the Cavs become that double decade powerhouse where LeBron/Wiggins titles lead into multple Wiggins titles. Please don't make that mistake. What's Wiggins best case? Paul George? It took George 3-4 years to get to the level where he could legitimately impact a championship run. LeBron is 33 by then?
I'm a huge Kevin Love fan. He's been continually underrated for years for lots of reasons, but having watched him for years now, I can tell you this...you won't regret adding him to your team if you can. If that costs you Wiggins, I'd still jump at the chance if the Cavs were my team. Love would be devastating next to LeBron. Offensively, I can't think of a better forward combo than LeBron and Love. The outlet passes to LeBron on the break, the pick and pop 3s, the ball movement and floor spacing as well as offensive rebounding. I'd love to watch that combo. Love's defense will never be his calling card, but he actually plays decent team defense when he's motivated and I have no doubt that he'd be motivated to play with LeBron. It sounds like Love would welcome a trade with no reservations which would allow you to lock up a top 10 player for 6 years if you max him out next summer. Love is 25 which means you've locked in his 6 prime years. You're not getting the last good years of a guy like KG. Keep in mind, the Wolves and their fans don't want to trade Love. If David Kahn had a brain and had locked up Love for 5 years instead of this player option after 3 business, we wouldn't be even talking about Wiggins.
Go ahead and try to get Love without offering Wiggins. I would too, but understand that it almost assuredly won't happen. Yes, Love is nearly certainly leaving the Wolves, but Cleveland isn't getting him unless it's by trade and without Wiggins, there's not much you have that interests us. Even your 3 firsts don't add much as they're all bound to be outside the lottery given that Bosh and Wade are likely still staying in Miami making them still a legit playoff team in the East. I guess you could let it play out and see if Haywood's contract and late picks gets it done later, but the odds are slim that another team won't beat that (there's a couple of teams interested that will reportedly trade without a guarantee that Love will resign). Even a 2nd look Bulls package of Mirotic and Taj Gibson would trump a non-Wiggins Cavs offer and that would load up your competition. I'd actually prefer a Bulls deal, but honestly, I'm tired of these big market teams always getting theirs. I'd rather a small market team that's recently struggled get theirs for a change.
After all of that...I'm not even that high on Wiggins. I'm a big believer in advanced analytics and Wiggins production isn't exactly inspiring. He's got upside, but I think the chances he EVER becomes what Love already is are quite small. I'd actually prefer other Love trades compared to Wiggins, but that's not my point here. My point is that you guys could follow up your homerun LeBron signing by turning it into a 3 run homer by dealing for Love. Don't get greedy by planning for a Wiggins grand slam that likely won't come. Love is just so good already that it's not worth the risk. Take your good fortune and become an instant title contender for the next 5 years.
Wiggins signed and then traded in 30 days along with Anthony Bennett and a late first rounder (one of your 3 next year) for Love. That deal preserves your depth with Waiters, Thompson and Andy V. still in your rotation along with the ring chasers like Miller and maybe Ray Allen. Use your other picks and the Haywood contract next summer to add a big time veteran to your LeBron, Love, Irving core that just won a title and gear up for 5 years of contention. Don't mess this up because Wiggins might be as good as Love is now.
