Kyrie Irving Emerges as Basketball World Cup MVP

Much has been said about how a player's lack of experience in the Playoffs can be a detriment to his team. This comes up frequently when talk turns to the Cavalier's chances in the Playoffs. Kyrie and Kevin Love are often the subject of this theory.

With Kyrie having never played in the Basketball World Cup before, it would seem to be a perfect case study for how he might handle the pressures of an important and potentially nerve-racking tournament. He did not disappoint. He, in fact, seemed to thrive in that environment and improved with each successive game despite the stakes growing ever higher. He played amazing in the final match, going 6-6 from 3 point range and 10-13 overall, while dishing 4 assists and only turning the ball over twice. He earned his MVP, and he certainly boosted his confidence in his game, and should have earned himself a little benefit of the doubt for how he might perform in similar scenarios during the Playoffs.

While there is no certainty in basketball, I believe he has the tools and the nerve to make a very positive impact in the Playoffs. It may be a long time away, but that's the first thing that came to my mind following this World Cup win. What are your thoughts?

(Also of note: Kevin Love played an important role in the 2012 Olympics as well.)
