NBA Draft 2013: Cleveland Cavaliers "likely" to take Alex Len first overall

The Cleveland Cavaliers are on the clock in the 2013 NBA Draft. Actually, they've been on the clock for several weeks now and we still have no idea who they are going to choose. The first indication was that Nerlens Noel was the obvious pick. But now, it's gotten a lot more hazy as Chris Grant and the rest of the front office works through the rest of the prospects. I still believe that we won't know who the Cavs are taking until they've had a chance to meet with all of the prospects and do their due diligence -- but some reporters feel otherwise.

Jimmy Smith of the New Orleans Times-Pacayune is reporting that the Cavaliers are likely to select Alex Len with the first pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.

Hearing that C Alex Len, who visited with #Pelicans on Friday, is now the likely choice for #Cavs at No. 1 spot in next week's draft.

— Jimmy Smith (@JimmySmith504) June 17, 2013

I'm not sure how he would know this, seeing as the Cavs have been quite silent about their selection in recent years. But Smith was confident enough to report it, so I guess we have to believe him to a certain degree. This could be a smokescreen, although I'm not sure what good a smokescreen does when you're picking 1st overall. Anyway, that's that. How would you feel if the Cavs are leaning towards taking Alex Len?

NBA Draft 2013: What happens if the Cavaliers don't draft Nerlens Noel?

The brain-trust at Fear the Sword has been leading the Nerlens Noel bandwagon for a long time now. I wrote during the middle of the season that Noel was the obvious top player in this draft and if the Cleveland Cavaliers had the first pick, the decision would be easy. However, it appears that the decision is a bit more complicated than we anticipated.

When Nerlens Noel tore his ACL and lost some weight following the surgery, people started to question just how durable he would be in the NBA. Reports are flying out of Cleveland that Chris Grant and company are not quite comfortable tabbing Noel as their top pick.

Over the course of this draft process, I have fallen in love with the idea of Noel on the Cavs and would be thoroughly disappointed if they end up going in a different direction. Beyond disappointed, I'll probably have a wide range of emotions depending on what the Cavs do during the draft. Assuming that they don't trade the pick and remain in the #1 spot, here's a ranking of how I'll react to each selection (ranking is from least upset to most upset, according to Nic Cage GIFs).

1. Alex Len

If the Cavs decide to take Len instead of Noel, I'll be pretty upset. I mean, I'll be upset regardless of what they do if Noel isn't their guy. Alex Len would probably make me the least angry because he's still a really nice prospect. He's big and fills a need. He's still huge and has great defensive upside, even if he isn't the otherworldly defensive prospect that Noel appears to be. There are questions about the stress fractures in his ankles, but if the Cavs take him then I assume they aren't too concerned about those.

How upset, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

2. Anthony Bennett

This is a really difficult ranking for me. Why would I be less upset if the Cavs drafted Bennett first overall than if they drafted Otto Porter? It comes down to upside. I don't think Porter has any chance at truly being a star in this league. With Bennett's freakish athleticism and great scoring ability, he has a chance to be a stud. If he commits himself to the defensive end, he could be the best player in this draft. I think there's a very low (virtually nonexistent) chance that Porter ends up being the best player from the draft. If the Cavs determine that Bennett is the best player, I can get on board with that more than if they pick Porter due to him being a better fit.

How upset, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

3. Otto Porter

As I just said previously, I had a hard time determining if I'd be more upset with Porter or Bennett. Is it crazy to say that if we were picking 3rd, I'd rather have Porter but since we're picking 1st, I'd rather have Bennett? It's probably crazy but it makes sense in my head. Porter is a fine player and will have a nice career, but I just don't think he has the longterm upside to justify being the first pick. If the Cavs take him, it will look like they were being safe and just took the best fit. That would upset me greatly.

How upset, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

4. Victor Oladipo

It doesn't really sound as though Oladipo is in the running for the #1 pick, but anything is possible. I guess I'd understand the pick because he's probably ready to contribute right away and could definitely play defense. That's what Mike Brown wants to do, so at least he'd be a fit in the team's new philosophy. That said, he's still not nearly the best player available and questions about his shooting ability have me extremely hesitant about him.

How upset, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

5. Ben McLemore

There are a lot of Cavs fans that would actually be happy if the team selected McLemore with the first overall pick. I don't understand that at all. They just used the #4 pick on a shooting guard and Dion Waiters made significant strides over the course of the year. The backcourt of the future is set and taking McLemore would be incredibly hard for me to justify.

How upset, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

6. Trey Burke

Ummm, the Cavaliers already have Kyrie Irving. If you think the Cavs should draft Burke because Kyrie gets hurt too much or because you're afraid the Cavs won't be able to sign him long term, just go away. This would be a disaster.

How upset, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

What if the Cavs just take Nerlens Noel?

WOOOOOOOO!

How happy, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

What if the Cavs don't take ANY of these players?

Well..let's just say it wouldn't be pretty.

How upset, on a scale of 1 to Nic Cage?

NBA Free Agency: Andre Iguodala to opt out of deal with Denver Nuggets

The Cleveland Cavaliers have made it clear that they intend to be active this offseason. After three straight losing seasons, Chris Grant and Dan Gilbert are anxious to make it back to the NBA Playoffs and many view this offseason as a crucial step in that process. Of course, we still have the NBA Draft before we even consider free agency, but it's fun to speculate about regardless.

Andre Iguodala has been a favorite hypothetical free agent target of Cavs fans for a while now. And he's finally available. According to reports, Iguodala will opt out of the final year of his contract with the Denver Nuggets. This isn't all that surprising because opting out allows Iguodala to get a longer term contract, even if he wants to stay in Denver. Once George Karl was fired by the Nuggets and Masai Ujiri left, it became even more obvious that Iguodala would opt out and at least consider his other options.

Iguodala will bypass the $15.9 million owed him next season and will be eligible to sign a new four-year deal elsewhere or sign an extension up to five years with the Nuggets.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have plenty of cap space and could make a very intriguing offer to Iguodala if they chose to go in that direction. Now, it would take a lot of money to get Iguodala in Cleveland, but I suppose it's possible. Furthermore, the Cavs would probably have to do a lot of convincing to make Iggy buy into the idea that Cleveland is a place where he can win. He just opted out from a team that won 57 games, after all.

Apart from convincing Iguodala to come to Cleveland, the Cavs would have to decide if they even want him. As I said, it would take a lot of money to sign Iguodala and it may be smarter to hold onto that cap space and make a run for LeBron James the following summer. Personally, I think the Cavs' front office will go for the latter option and wait to see how the LeBron situation plays out. Whether or not that's the right call is obviously up for debate.

Keep in mind that this is basically just me throwing an idea around and isn't based on any actual rumors about the Cavs going after Andre. All I know is that the Cavs just hired a defensive-minded head coach, Dan Gilbert wants a defense-oriented team, and Iguodala is one of the absolute best defenders in the league. It seems like all the pieces are there for the Cavs to make a serious run at Iggy, but once again, there's that #6 guy looming over any big decisions that the Cavs will make.

 <fieldset class="poll-box">
 <legend>Poll</legend>

Should the Cavs make a run at Iguodala?

NBA Draft 2013: Answering Twitter mailbag questions before the NBA Draft

The NBA Draft is coming up and everybody has an opinion. As you may know, I'm currently in New Zealand and haven't had as much of a presence on the site in recent days. Therefore, I want to get my opinion out there on several topics. Which topics? Whatever topics you guys care about. I figured the best way to do this was to ask for some questions on Twitter and then answer them in a mailbag type of situation. Here we go.

TWITTER MAILBAG!

@conradkaznba How many of the 4 picks do you expect the Cavs to actually retain by the end of draft night?

— Sean O'Connor (@soconnor76) June 9, 2013

This is a good question and something that should be addressed right away. Nowadays, you'll see plenty of mock drafts on various sites (including this one) and you'll see that the Cleveland Cavaliers have 4 draft picks: 1st, 19th, 31st and 33rd. Since it's damn near impossible to predict trades before they actually happen, mock drafts will have the Cavaliers selecting four players. Let me get this out there right now -- THE CAVS WILL NOT DRAFT FOUR PLAYERS. Or at least it seems very unlikely. This is already a very young team and there's simply no way that they'll bring in four more rookies.

So to answer Sean's question, I say they'll probably draft two players with probably only one of them actually being a rookie in training camp this year. I suspect they'll use one pick to stash a player overseas and they'll use the other picks to trade for more veteran players, picks in future drafts, or to trade up like they did last year when they selected Tyler Zeller.

@conradkaznba If the Cavs were to package some of their picks to move up the draft, who are trade partners & which player would they target?

— David Grubbs (@dgrubbs21) June 9, 2013

This question sort of plays off the last one. As I just said, I'm not even so sure that the Cavs will draft 2 rookies that they expect to play this upcoming season. It sounds as though most of the international players want to play in the NBA next year, but I guess the Cavs could draft someone and then convince them to stay overseas for a year or two. Those targets would be Sergey Karasev or Rudy Gobert. It sounds as though they are quite interested in Karasev and it's unclear where his draft range sits right now. If they really want him and don't think he'll get to 19, the Dallas Mavericks are the most obvious trade partner. Dallas is clearly shopping the 13th pick and while I'm not sure what it requires to get it, it's probably the most obtainable first round pick.

Giannis Antetokuompo is the other hot name. He's playing pretty well right now and he's doing it against actual competition. He has a long ways to go before he makes an impact with an NBA team, but I could certainly see the Cavs targeting him with the 19th pick. If they get antsy and are afraid he won't last that long, they can dangle 31 or 33 and try to jump a couple teams to grab him.

@conradkaznba Why hasn't Oladipo been talked about for the number one pick?

— Dan Armelli (@dano708) June 9, 2013

Victor Oladipo is a fine player and projects to be a pretty good NBA wing, but there's a number of reasons that he's not the #1 pick. The first reason is the position that he plays. He's a shooting guard and despite his big wingspan, he's not big enough to play small forward. The Cavaliers just spent a high draft pick on a shooting guard named Dion Waiters and he actually had a really nice end to his rookie season. He's already met with Mike Brown and is putting in lots of work this offseason. It doesn't make much sense to use the #1 pick on a position that you just addressed with the #4 pick the year before. Even if you think Oladipo is a better prospect that Dion, he'll be a rookie and there will necessarily be an adjustment period for him as he acclimates himself to the NBA. Dion has already taken his lumps in the NBA and is simply further along in his development. If you subscribe to the belief that the Cavs need to make the playoffs next year, there's value simply in the fact that Dion will be in his 2nd year while Victor would be in his first.

The second reason why Oladipo isn't (or shouldn't) be in play for the #1 pick is that he may not be the best shooting guard prospect. Ben McLemore matches Oladipo in athleticism and already has a huge advantage in outside shooting. The areas that Oladipo excels in are areas that McLemore can certainly develop with time. In short, I think it's more likely that McLemore is going to develop into a plus defender and become more assertive than it is for Oladipo to develop an elite three-point shot. McLemore is younger (albeit it not THAT much younger) and really just needs more experience. I don't doubt that NBA coaches will prefer Oladipo because he has a high motor and is dedicated to the defensive end, but as a prospect, McLemore can certainly become those things.

@conradkaznba Why hasn't Trevor Mbakwe gotten Kenneth Faried hype?

— Justin Russo (@FlyByKnite) June 9, 2013

This is a pretty good question too. Mbakwe is an interesting player and was certainly productive during his college career. He's super athletic, has a nose for offensive rebounds, and a very high motor. That sounds like Kenneth Faried, right? Well not quite. For starters, Mbakwe is already 24 years old and will turn 25 halfway through his rookie season. Right there, you have a limit on his upside. Faried was old enough as a rookie, but Mbakwe is still significantly older. Why is he so old? Well he went through a lot during his college career. He redshirted a year, had two major knee surgeries, and was suspended for a season due to a felony assault charge. Basically, there's a lot of questions surrounding Mbakwe.

Beyond that, Mbakwe was just not nearly as productive in his college career as Faried. In his final three college seasons, here were his rebounding totals per 40 minutes (offensive in parentheses): 14.0 (4.2), 13.0 (5.5), 14.4 (5.5). Awesome, right? Here's Faried's numbers: 17.3 (5.7), 17.2 (5.6), 16.7 (6.6). Those are crazy numbers. He was playing against inferior competition, but that production is insane. Rebounding typically translates but it's a little unfair to compare what Mbwake did to what Faried did. I think Mbwake will probably be a nice find in the 2nd round, but there's a reason that Faried was such a steal.

— AKlamz (@aKlamBake) June 9, 2013

I'm not sure that people think Shabazz Muhammad will be a bust. I think the hate has gone a little bit too far and it can be confusing to understand what people really think of him. The disappointment in Muhammad stems from him being a year older than people thought, the fact that he wasn't all that impressive in college, and the fact that he's a little one-dimensional. He's a scorer, but he doesn't have an elite jump shot. He's a good athlete but he's not an explosive, freak athlete. He's strong for a shooting guard, but he's a little undersized for a small forward. He was touted as an elite prospect coming out of high school and gradually, all of these question marks have come up.

So does that mean he'll be a bust? Not at all. He's just no longer worth a top-5 pick. I've been fairly vocal in my dislike of Shabazz, but I don't want to be misunderstood. I think he's a nice player. He can score and that definitely has value in the NBA. If you get a player that can create his own offense with the 10th pick in the draft, you do that. I think his realistically obtainable ceiling is probably DeMar Derozan. I don't think he's much of a playmaker and probably won't be a great defender. But in the right role and right situation, I think Shabazz will be quite productive and carve out a solid NBA career.

@conradkaznba Over or under: 3.5 all stars come out of this draft

— Sam Garriock (@NZBasketball) June 9, 2013

Almost certainly under. It'd take a while to go through every player and talk about his chances to be an NBA All Star, but I don't think it's likely that 4 of them end up there. I think the guys with realistic chances are Ben McLemore, Trey Burke, Nerlens Noel, and Anthony Bennett. Some other could certainly surprise me and make a team or two throughout their careers but I wouldn't bet on it. A lot depends on the player's position and which conference he lands in. Shooting guard in the Eastern Conference may be the easiest position over the next several years, so whichever prospects end up there will probably have the best shot.

@conradkaznba Who do you like better, Dennis Schroeder or Michael Carter-Williams?

— Trevor Magnotti (@Tmagnotti) June 9, 2013

Michael Carter-Williams. This is probably a bit of a cop-out, but I can't really provide a better answer: I haven't seen enough of Dennis Schroeder. He's gotten a lot of hype thanks to his Nike Hoop Summit performance, but I haven't seen him play all that often besides that one game. Carter-Williams has elite athleticism and size for the position. His biggest questions are his consistency and his utter lack of a jump shot. Guys like Jason Kidd and Rajon Rondo have proven that you can get by without a jumper at the point guard position, but you better be really good at a lot of other things if that's the case. MCW has the chance to do that (as well as the chance to develop a jumper), but it will take the right situation and some patience by whichever team drafts him.

@conradkaznba other than Reggie Bullock, who do you like for the Cavs at 19? (tried to come up with a better question for way too long)

— Cole Patty (@Cole_Patty) June 9, 2013

Good, I'm glad you got my Reggie Bullock love out of the way. If you're just tuning in, I'm a big Bullock fan. I love the shooting, the size, the toughness, and the willingness to accept his role on a team. Beyond him, however, there are plenty of options at 19 (if the Cavs keep this pick). As mentioned before, Sergey Karasev is definitely someone that interests the Cavaliers. I already talked about how the Cavs might look to stash a prospect with this pick but I really do believe that Antetokuonmpo is in play here. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope would be lovely here, but there's almost 0% chance that he falls this far. If the Cavaliers select Nerlens Noel with the first overall pick like we think they will, this pick almost has to be a shooter/wing player. You can't, for example, take Noel and Mason Plumlee or Steven Adams in the first round. Tony Snell, Tony Mitchell, Tim Hardaway Jr., Ricky Ledo, and Jamaal Franklin are all interesting in their own ways and if one has a particularly impressive workout/interview, I guess I could see the Cavs going in that direction.

There has been talk (by fans) about the possibilities of the Cavs taking a backup point guard for Kyrie Irving with the 19th pick. While there are some nice options in this draft, I doubt the Cavs want a rookie backing up Kyrie. They'll likely try to get a veteran backup PG (Shaun Livingston if he's not too expensive, or someone like that) and there seems to be a bit of a drop-off in PG talent after Schroeder and Shane Larkin are selected (which will almost certainly be before the Cavs pick at 19).

-------

Thank you guys so much for the questions, there was a really good selection to pick from and I'll definitely do this again soon. In the next few days I'll be working on a post about who the Cavs could potentially trade the 19th pick for. There's a lot of talk about trading the #1 pick, but it seems equally, if not more, likely that the Cavs trade #19 for a veteran player. So keep an eye out for that post.

Any other questions? Leave em in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them.

NBA Draft 2013: Nerlens Noel is "ahead of schedule" with knee recovery

Nerlens Noel is still working on coming back from that nasty ACL tear. He won't be ready for the start of the NBA season, but his doctors and trainers are confident that his recovery is going as planned. If these reports are true, then Nerlens Noel should easily be the 1st pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.

The updates on Noel's recovery are courtesy of Dr. James Andrews (his doctor) and his trainer, Kevin Wilk. Chad Ford supplied some quotes in his most recent post for ESPN.com.

Dr. James Andrews:

"We're really happy with his progress," Andrews told ESPN in a phone interview. "He's several weeks ahead of schedule on his rehab. He's improving on a weekly basis. He has a completely stable knee. The bone plugs are completely healed into the bone. His muscle and weight is returning. He has had no setbacks at all."

Kevin Wilk:

"He's well ahead of schedule," he said. "He's now out on the court for about an hour doing free shooting. He's running in the pool. I don't know too many guys who could do that at this stage."

Obviously it's going to be a process once Nerlens Noel gets drafted, but this is certainly good news. It sounds as though Noel is recovering just fine and will be able to return to full strength soon enough. Furthermore, it sounds like he's nearly at the point where he can work on some basketball skills and improve his game while he waits for his knee to reach 100%. Of course, the only opinion that really matters is that of the Cleveland Cavaliers' doctors. They'll get a chance to see what's going on with Noel's knee on June 20th when he visits the team.

NBA Mock Draft 2013: Cavaliers draft Sergey Karasev in Chad Ford's newest mock draft

Chad Ford of ESPN.com seemingly publishes a billion NBA Mock Drafts before the actual draft rolls around. He's currently on version 4.0 and there are a few slight changes. There is not, however, a change at the very top of the draft.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers select Nerlens Noel

Here's part of what Ford says about the Cavs selecting Noel:

"Typically, by this juncture in the draft, we know who the No. 1 pick is. Right now, however, we're just offering educated guesses. That's because Cavs sources say that the team won't be close to making a decision until workouts are done and the team has a chance to make a thorough pass through the medical information. With three potential top picks unable to work out because of injuries, those reports have never been more important."

19. Cleveland Cavaliers select Sergey Karasev

/cut to David Zavac jumping up and down screaming with excitement

Here's what Ford says about this pick.

"He has the size to play both wing positions, is a terrific shooter, has a high basketball IQ, and at 19, already has significant professional experience averaging 18.4 PPG in the Russian League. A few scouts compare him to smaller version of Toni Kukoc. Karasev could go as high at No. 9 to the Wolves but would be a great get here by the Cavs."

Be sure to check out the rest of the mock draft at ESPN.com and stay tuned for more updates from Ford as the NBA Draft gets a bit closer.

NBA Playoffs 2013: Heat vs. Pacers Game 7 highlights and GIFs

The Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers both had their eyes on a Game 7 victory and a trip to the NBA Finals. A common theme throughout this series has been the flopping and Chris Bosh felt obligated to keep that storyline going.

Mario Chalmers joined in on the flopping fun.

But Paul George had enough and finally called for all of the flopping to stop.

So once the Heat stopped flopping and got down to business, they blew the Pacers away. LeBron James did his LeBron James stuff and the Heat cruised to a third straight NBA Finals appearance.

In the end, the Heat were on their way to another NBA Finals and the Heat bros were celebrating and jumping and stuff.

Heat bros are actually very good at jumping in unison.
