1.Cleveland opened their fifth straight and 18th overall postseason appearance with a 96-83 victory, giving the team a 1-0 lead over Chicago. The Cavs are 10-19 all-time in Game 1s of the playoffs (7-10 in Game 1s of the First Round all-time), but has won 17 of their last 21 games and won their last six First Round games by at least 11 points. The team has won all seven (7-0) of its previous best-of-seven playoff series in which it won Game 1 and is 9-0 all-time (current franchises only), which is best in the NBA. The only NBA team with a better record in best-of-seven series after winning Game 1 is Portland (8-0). Saturday was the Cavs' first victory in a Game 1 versus Chicago in franchise history (1-5) as the team looks to defeat Chicago for the first time in six playoff matchups all-time.

2. Cleveland improved to 65-73 (.471) all-time in the playoffs, including 44-25 (.638) at home in the playoffs. The team has won 10 of their last 11 postseason games at The Q and since the 2006 postseason, the Cavaliers are 23-7 (.767) at home, which is the tied for the most home wins in the NBA playoffs over that span with the Los Angeles Lakers (23-5, .821).

3. On Saturday, four Cavaliers scored in double figures led by LeBron James, who had 24 points on 9-19 (.474) shooting, six rebounds, five assists and a postseason career-high four blocks. James has now posted 21 straight playoff games with at least 20 points, the NBA’s longest streak. In that span (began 5/8/08), he has averaged 33.0 pts, 8.1 rebs, 7.2 assts, 1.8 stls and 1.1 blks. His 1,785 points is the highest total of any player since he made his first playoff appearance in 2006.

1. Cleveland finished the 2009-10 NBA season with the best overall record at 61-21 (.744), best home record at 35-6 (.854) and was tied with Boston for the second-best road record (26-15, .634). The Cavaliers are the first team since the Chicago Bulls (1995-96 and 1996-97) and only the fifth team in the last 19 seasons to finish with sole possession of the best regular season record in consecutive years. The team has won 60-games for the second time in franchise history and became only the ninth different franchise (done 18 times) in NBA history to have back-to-back 60 win seasons

2. Cleveland finished the season at home with the league's best home record and became only the 14th instance in NBA history and seventh time (five teams) in the last 35 years that a team has held sole possession of the best home record in consecutive seasons. Since the start of the 2008-09 season, the Cavaliers are an NBA-best 74-8 (.902) at home and that is tied for 11th best all-time. Since the 2005-06 season, the Cavs are 162-43 (.790) at home, which trails only the Dallas Mavericks (164-41, .800 / 28- 13 this year) for best home record over the last five seasons. The team is 43-25 (.632) all-time at home in the playoffs

3.  Entering the playoffs, Cleveland will look to defeat Chicago for the first time in six playoff matchups. The Cavaliers and Bulls were tied in their season series 2-2. This series will pit two of the best defensive and rebounding teams in the NBA during the season. Chicago and Cleveland are tied at .442 in opponent field goal percentage and rank third and fourth, respectively. The Bulls averaged a league-high 44.5 rpg while the Cavaliers ranked 11th at 42.5 rpg, but Cleveland gives up the second fewest rebounds at 38.5 per game in the league. That led the team to hold the largest rebounding differential at (42.5 own - 38.5 opp = +4.0 rpg) and lead the league with 57 of 82 (.695) games with a rebounding advantage. The Cavaliers ranked second in allowing only 9.7 opponent offensive rebounds per game and was tied for second in fewest second chance points allowed at 11.7.

Game #82 - Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks Season Finale Open Thread

LeBron James has missed the past 3 games so why play him now?  The Cavaliers won't play James tonight when the Cavaliers finish the regular season in Atlanta.  The Hawks have sewn up the #3 seed in the East - and a possible 2nd Round matchup with Orlando but are expected to go for the win in front of their hometown fans.  The Cavaliers have beaten Atlanta all 3 times this season - much to the dismay of Hawks fans - so I expect Atlanta to bring a little extra to the arena tonight.

Win or lose, the key is for Cleveland to get in and out of town healthy and ready for the Playoffs to start this weekend.

3-in the Key

1. Cleveland owns the NBA's best overall record at 61-20 (.753), best home record at 35-6 (.854) and is tied with Boston for the second-best road record (26-14, .650) behind Dallas. The Cavaliers are the first team since the Chicago Bulls (1995-96 and 1996-97) and only the fifth team in the last 19 seasons to finish with sole possession of the best regular season record in consecutive years. The team has won 60-games for the second time in franchise history and became only the ninth different franchise (done 18 times) in NBA history to have back-to-back 60 win seasons.

2. On Sunday, Cleveland finished the season at home 35-6 for the league's best home record and became only the 14th instance in NBA history and seventh time (five teams) in the last 35 years that a team has held sole possession of the best home record in consecutive seasons: (Boston Celtics (twice) 1985-86 & 1986-87 & 1987-88, Utah Jazz - 1990-91 & 1991-92, Chicago Bulls - 1995-96 & 1996-97, Sacramento Kings (twice) 2000-01 & 2001-02 & 2002-03).

3.  This season at The Q included three 11-game home winning streaks (Nov. 14-Dec. 30, Jan. 6-Feb. 11, Feb. 23-Apr. 6) and the team became first one to have three separate double-digit winning streaks at home in one season since the Utah Jazz during the 1996-97 season. Since the start of the 2008-09 season, the Cavaliers are an NBA-best 74-8 (.902) at home, and since the 2005-06 season, the Cavaliers are 162-43 (.790) at home, which trails only the Dallas Mavericks (163-41, .799 / 27-13 this year) for best home record over the last five seasons.

The worst part of the season, at least for me.  No one knows who will be playing, who won;t be playing and yes, of course, the constant concern about injury - see Antawn Jamison.  Tonight, the Cavaliers continue to try and finish the season in one piece at home against the Pacers at The Q.  With 3 games left before the playoffs start, Cleveland has little more to prove or accomplish than to get to next weekend with as few bumps and bruises as possible....

3-in the Key

1. Cleveland owns the NBA's best overall record at 61-18 (.772), best home record at 35-4 (.897) and best road record (26-14, .650). Cleveland can continue make NBA history by 1.) holding the best home and road record in a season and 2.) holding sole possession of the best home record in consecutive seasons. Cleveland has won 18 of their last 22 games and are 35-10 (.778) in 2010, which is the best mark in the NBA in that span.

2. Entering tonight's game, the Cleveland will look to win its 12th straight game at home, which would be the longest home winning streak of the season. The Cavs have won 11 straight and 33 of their last 35 home games and in that span, are averaging 104.7 points on .506 shooting while holding their opponents to just 94.5 points on .438 shooting. The team has now had three 11-game winning streaks at The Q this season (Nov. 14-Dec. 30, Jan. 6-Feb. 11, Feb. 23-Apr. 6). The last team to have three separate double-digit winning streaks at home in one season was the Utah Jazz during the 1996-97 season. Since the start of the 2008-09 season, the Cavaliers are an NBA-best 74-6 (.924) at home, and since the 2005-06 season, the Cavaliers are 162-41 (.798) at home, which is tied with Dallas (163-41, .799 / 27-13 this year) for the least amount of losses at home in the last five seasons.

3.  Entering tonight's game versus Indiana, the Cavs have defeated the Pacers 10 consecutive times at The Q. Indiana is one of NBA's hottest teams, going 8-2 in their last 10 games, but Cleveland will be going for the season series sweep for the second time (2007-08) in the last three seasons. This season, the Cavs have jumped out to big leads in the first quarter, outscoring the Pacers 34.7-27.0 on average in the opening period. The team has shot .600 from the field and .667 from behind the arc in the first quarter of those games with the Pacers this season. Since the start of the 2008-09 season, the Cavs are 71-8 (.899) against teams under .500, which is the highest such percentage in the NBA, and have won 30 of their last 31 games versus such teams.

Could the Raptors and Cavalier be previewing the 1st Round of the Playoffs tonight at the Q?  The next 7 days will tell the tale.  Toronto has a 1-game lead over the Chicago Bulls for the 8th and final spot in the East.  Needless to say Toronto needs this game much more than the Cavaliers do.  As for the Bulls, they'll get their shot at the Cavs on Thursday Night in Chicago.

The Cavaliers are equal opportunity destroyers.....

3-in the Key

1. Cleveland owns the NBA‟s best overall record at 60-17 (.779), best home record at 34-4 (.895) and best road record (26-13, .667) and leads the league with highest point differential at +7.3. With the Lakers loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, the Cavaliers have clinched home court advantage throughout the 2010 NBA Playoffs.

2. The Cavs have won 17 of their last 20 games and is 34-9 (.791) in 2010, which is the best mark in that span, and is the only team to have fewer than 10 losses. The team has won 60-games for the second time in franchise history and became only the ninth different franchise (18 times done) in NBA history to have back-to-back 60 win seasons

3.  After going a league-best 66-16 (.805) last season, the Cavaliers could 1.) become the first team since the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96 (72-10) and 1996-97 (69-13) and only the fifth team in the last 19 seasons to have sole possession of the best record in the regular season in consecutive years. The team can also potentially make more NBA history by 2.) holding the best home and road record in a season, 3.) winning 65 games in consecutive seasons and 4.) holding the best home record in consecutive seasons.

Happy Easter!

The Cavaliers and Celtics play their 4th and final game of the regular season, with the Cavs looking to take 3 of 4 - and 3 straight - from the Cs.  While many in the press and fans alike have dismissed the Celtics, they are still 19 games over .500 and extremely dangerous.

Unfortunately for the Celtics, the Cavaliers still have a major carrot worth playing for - homecourt throughout the playoffs and Finals.  With their magic number to clinch the NBA's best record at 1, a win by the Cavs OR a loss by the Lakers and the Cavaliers can lock up homecourt throughout.  Needless to say, the Celtics would like nothing better than to delay that celebration at least one more game.

While Anderson Varejao is still a question mark after missing the last 3 games, J.J. Hickson has been solid averaging 14.4 points and 8.8 rebounds over his last 5.

While Cleveland comes in having won 9-of-10, the Celtics have lost 3 straight, including a 109-104 OT loss at home to Houston on Friday Night.

3-in the Key

1. With Friday's 93-88 win over Atlanta and Orlando's 112-100 loss to San Antonio, the Cavaliers clinched the best record in the Eastern Conference. With a Cavs' win versus Boston or a Los Angeles Lakers' loss to San Antonio today, Cleveland will clinch home court advantage throughout the entire NBA Playoffs.

2. Cleveland owns the NBA's best overall record at 60-16 (.789), best home record at 34-4 (.895) and best road record (26-12, .684) and leads the league with highest point differential at +7.3. The team has won 17 of their last 19 games and is 34-8 (.810) in 2010, which is the best mark in that span. With Friday's win over Atlanta, the team secured the second 60-win season in franchise history and trails only last season's team that won 66 games for the most in franchise history.

3. Friday's victory over Atlanta notched the Cavs'10th consecutive victory at The Q (Feb. 23rd - present). With two prior 11-game winning streaks at The Q this season from Nov. 14-Dec. 30 and Jan. 6-Feb. 11, the Cavs now have three home winning streaks of 10 games or more this season. The last team to have three double-digit winning streaks at home in one season was the Utah Jazz, who had home winnings streaks of 11 (11/13/96-12/10/96) and 13 twice (12/14/96 - 2/20/97 and 2/25/97 - 4/19/97) during the 1996-97 season.

Game #76 - Atlanta Hawks at Cleveland Cavaliers Game Night Open Thread

This has become quite a fun rivalry the past year or so.  Ever since the Cavaliers swept the Hawks out of the playoffs last season, Atlanta has been gunning for them.  The edge to this series took another turn during a back-to-back, home and home series was swept by the Cavs earlier this season.  In other words, the Hawks thought they gave a couple of games away and they want some revenge.

The Hawks are on their way to their first 50-win season since 1997-98, but need to prove they can beat Cleveland. Both meetings this season were tight, but the Cavaliers won 95-84 in Atlanta on Dec. 29 behind 20 points from Mo Williams, then got a season-high 48 from LeBron James a night later in Cleveland to win 106-101.

The Cavs trailed by as many as 17 in the second half of the most recent meeting before rallying. The Hawks weren't just upset with their late collapse, but also with the shot clock, which failed to reset after an offensive rebound with 1:41 left -- costing Atlanta an estimated five seconds.

The Hawks, who got 35 points from Joe Johnson, issued an appeal for the final seconds to be replayed but were denied.

Atlanta is also playing for playoff position.  They are currently the #3 seed in the East - 1 game ahead of Boston - and they would like to stay there.

For Cleveland, the Magic Number to clinch home court throughout the Playoffs stands at 2.  With Atlanta in Cleveland tonight, followed by Boston on Sunday, the Cavs could wrap it all up at home this weekend.

3-in the Key

1. Cleveland owns the NBA's best overall record at 59-16 (.787), best home record at 33-4 (.897) and best road record (26-12, .684) and leads the league with highest point differential at +7.3. The team has won 16 of their last 18 games and is 33-8 (.805) in 2010, which is the best mark in that span. With Wednesday's win over Milwaukee, the team secured the second-most wins in franchise history with 59, trailing only the 66 wins from last season. The win also led to a 13-2, .867 month of March for the Cavs, which matched the third-best month in team history, based on winning percentage, trailing only last season (16-1, .941) and Feb. 1993 (12-1, .923) and tied with Nov. 2008 and Dec. 1998.

2.  Since Head Coach Mike Brown took over the helm in 2005-06, the Cavs have a NBA-best 58-19 (.753) record in March, including a 38-4 (.905) record at The Q. They are also a perfect 26-0 against the Eastern Conference at home, which includes an undefeated 11-0 home record against the Central Division during that span. In addition, Cleveland has now won 19 consecutive home
games in March.
