2011-12 Game Recaps

Game #30 Recap: Cavaliers 101, Pistons 100

Swag.

So here's what I tweeted as the Cavaliers entered the fourth quarter against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night:

Kyrietweet_medium

And take over is exactly what he did. Kyrie Irving scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and led a furious comeback against the Pistons. In a game that they once trailed by 17, the Cavaliers pulled off another ridiculous come from behind win and beat Detroit 101-100 to move to 13-17 on the season.

Cavs Leaders: Points: Jamison, 32; Rebounds: Gee, 11; Assists: Irving, 8

Quick Thoughts:

First quarter: Woo, that was fun. Cavs shot the lights out and dropped 30 points. As I noted while it was happening, many of those points were on made jumpers. Naturally, that percentage comes down and they regress to the mean (spoiler alert).

Game Recap #29: Cavaliers 93, Kings 92

U Mad, Tyreke?

Thank you, Tyreke Evans. In a tight game down the stretch just after it seemed like the Cavaliers had blown it, Evans gave it right back to us and for that, we thank him. Kyrie drained the clutch free throws and gave the Cavs a 93-92 win to put them at 12-17 on the season.

Cavs leaders: Points: Irving, 23; Rebounds: Casspi, 12; Assists: Sessions, 5

Quick Thoughts: With the guard rotation out of order currently due to injuries I'm very happy to finally see Kyrie Irving and Ramon Sessions get a bunch more court time together. I rate them as the 1st and 3rd best players on the team so I'm not happy when they split minutes.

When DeMarcus Cousins made his layup to give the Kings a lead with 2.9 seconds to play it seemed as if the game was lost. Alas, Cavaliers secret weapon Tyreke Evans fouled Kyrie Irving with 0.4 seconds to play with the Kings up one. Evans thought the Kings had a foul to give when the Cavs were already in the bonus. A boneheaded play indeed - and from the Kings, it's not all that unexpected. Apparently that didn't change when Keith Smart took over. (Why do they call him "Smart" anyways? *rimshot*)

Game #28 Recap: Cavaliers 87, Heat 111

Photo

Pathetic. Humiliating. Embarrassing. Spineless.

You guys got any better words to describe that game?

Cavs Leaders: Points: Irving, 17; Rebounds: Thompson, 6; Assists: Sessions, 5

Quick Thoughts:

That was so bad. I was incredibly embarrassed watching that game. That was one of those performances that made me sick to my stomach. If someone asked me "Hey you're a Cavs fan, right?" last night, I would have considered saying, "Not tonight I'm not." It was that bad. Utter obliteration in a game that the fans wanted more than any other. Disgraceful.

Game Recap #27: Cavaliers 98, Pacers 87

Oh another injury? This is my stunned font.

So if you read my preview, you know that I was talking about how the Pacers would respond to their beatdown the night before. It was apparent early on that Indiana was not very interested in playing this game. They came out flat, and the Cavs came out gunning. With 3-days rest, the Cavaliers look fresh and shot the lights out. It culminated in a 98-87 win that wasn't even that close.

Also, let me remind you that I'm giving away 2 tickets to the Cavs game against the Celtics on Feb. 28th. Check it out.

Cavs Leaders: Points: Irving, 22; Rebounds: Casspi, 9; Assists: Irving, 5

Quick Thoughts:

I already mentioned the energy levels, but the discrepancy was staggering. The Cavs simply dominated Indiana in the first half. They jumped out to a 20-point lead merely 18 minutes into the game and just cruised to a wire-to-wire win.

Game #26 Recap: Cavaliers 84, Sixers 99

Does anyone doubt that Kyrie and Andy would STILL be more effective than Luke Harangody right now?

Worst game of the season? Worst game of the season. It wasn't exactly a surprise unless you were ignoring the obvious signs. The Sixers came out with way more energy and jumped out to a big lead in the first half. The Cavs kind of hung around and didn't let the game get too out of hand, but were never able to cut into the lead. It ended with a 99-84 loss to Philadelphia and dropped the Cavaliers to 10-16 on the season.

Cavs Leaders: Points: Jamison, 20; Rebounds: Jamison. Thompson; 8, Assists: Sessions, 8

Quick Thoughts:

The idea that this game was going to be horrible was pretty clear to me. It was Cleveland's fourth game in five nights, the Sixers are a really good team, and the Cavs were without their two best players. Initially, it seemed the Anderson Varejao merely had a sprained wrist, but an MRI revealed that he had a fracture in his wrist. Ugh. Once this was announced, it seemed like much of the excitement and energy around the Cavaliers dissipated. Without their star rookie and emotional leader, the Cavs had nothing to offer and sleepwalked through this blowout.

Game #25 Recap: Cavaliers 112, Bucks 113 (OT)

After jumping out to a 17-2 lead, the Cavaliers worked really hard to blow the lead and managed to end the first quarter down by 3 points. It was truly impressive. Throughout the game, Cleveland kept with the theme of blowing leads. In the end, the Cavs were unable to close out the game, went to overtime and fell by a score of 113-112. The Cavaliers move to 10-15 on the season.

Cavs Leaders: Points: Jamison, 34; Rebounds: Thompson, 13; Assists: Sessions, 16

Quick Thoughts:

The execution down the stretch made no sense to me. Down by 3 points with under 10 seconds to go, Byron Scott opts to go for the 2-pointer and then foul and extend the game. It almost worked, but Alonzo Gee was unable to hit both free throws. The Cavs then fouled but found themselves down 4 points instead of a possible 3 points. Therefore, when Gee hit the three at the buzzer, it simply made the Cavs lose by just 1 point. With no timeouts and down by 3, I would have gone for the tying bucket instead of the two-pointer. Overall, it doesn't really matter because if Gee hits both free throws, the game is tied and goes into double overtime.

Game #24 Recap: Cavaliers 99, Clippers 92

No Kyrie? No problem. Our superstar in the making was diagnosed with concussion-like symptoms merely minutes before tip-off, but Ramon Sessions filled in admirably. In a game that saw Anderson Varejao go to the locker room after a nasty fall, the Cavaliers kept fighting and managed to pull off a considerable upset. I didn't have much confidence going into this game and wasn't thoroughly pleased to see that Byron Scott was able to use his other players to generate enough offense to beat Chris Paul and the Clippers.

Cavs Leaders: Points: Jamison, 27; Rebounds: Varejao 11, Assists: Sessions, 13

Quick Thoughts:

The injury bug has hit the Cavaliers early and often. Daniel Gibson made his return and actually played pretty well, scoring 17 points. Other than that, the Cavs were incredibly shorthanded. Kyrie Irving was ruled out with a concussion. Tristan Thompson is still out with an ankle injury. Anthony Parker is out with a back injury. Every team gets their fair share of injuries, but it seems as if the Cavs are getting theirs all at once.

Concussions are super tricky. You can't really set a timetable for Kyrie's return because you just have to wait until the symptoms go away. Hopefully we get him back soon, but we don't want to bring him back too early. It's pretty scary stuff. Hopefully he recovers quickly.

Game #23 Recap: Cavaliers 91, Heat 107

Hey look, Haslem got out of the way this time.

For once, the score does not actually reflect how close the game was. We're pretty used to seeing the Cavaliers trail by a bunch of points and then close the margin in the fourth quarter to make the game look way closer. This time, however, we actually had a pretty fun, competitive game until the final 6 minutes or so. At that point, the Heat started hitting more shots and the Cavs couldn't hit anything. The lead ballooned and the result is a misleading 16-point final score.

Cavs Leaders: Points: Jamison, 25; Rebounds: Varejao, 11; Assists: Irving, 6

Quick Thoughts:

We need a shooting guard. Badly. With Daniel Gibson and Anthony Parker still hurting, the Cavs had to play Alonzo Gee at SG and it didn't go particularly well. It's not that Gee is that terrible at that spot, it's just that we need him to play elsewhere. When Gee has to play shooting guard, he can't come off the bench to play small forward behind Omri Casspi. It just creates unfortunate mismatches in other places. It makes Luke Harangody and Christian Eyenga play significant minutes. Nobody wants that. Chris Grant better sign a D-Leaguer who can play shooting guard soon.

Prepare yourselves for the least subtle hint of all time.
