Fear The Rumor Mill
NBA Rumors: Ramon Sessions Likely Traded Before Deadline
We all know that Ramon Sessions has been on the trade block for some time now and that there are several teams interested in his services. Among these teams are the Los Angeles Lakers and possibly the New York Knicks.
On our site, we have offered a few possible trade scenarios, most of which involved getting a player back in return for Sessions. The current reports around the league, however, make it seem like the Cavaliers are more interested in getting a first round draft pick in exchange for Razor Ramon.
Bob Finnan at the News-Herald reports that the Cavaliers will essentially be accepting nothing less than a 2012 first round pick for their backup point guard.
That's one reason you'll hear Sessions' name a lot in trade talks, as evidenced by recent rumors of the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks inquiring about his services. The Cavs want a first-round pick in exchange for Sessions.
Searching for D-League Prospects: A Night with the Dakota Wizards and Edwin Ubiles
With every NBA team officially able to offer players in the D-League 10-day contracts on Monday I'm expecting to see a bunch of them happen here as teams get bogged down and need some fresh legs for a rough stretch.
The Cavaliers certainly have options to sign players from anywhere, specifically Canton of the D-League since we own them, but I found someone far away from Ohio who I'd like to see get a look with the Cavaliers.
At a recent game between the Dakota Wizards and Iowa Energy, 6'6 Edwin Ubiles stood out to me as someone who could start to help knock Anthony Parker out of a job. And trust me, Mychel Thompson's effort against the Orlando Magic didn't help that fight tonight.
I'll break down the former Siena star after the jump.
NBA Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers Interested In Ramon Sessions
While many of us have been pondering the plausibility of Ramon Sessions being traded this season, there hasn't really been any talk about it. Until now, that is.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Los Angeles Lakers are amongst the teams most interested in Razor Ramon. Wait, you mean Derek Fisher wasn't cutting it? Man, I never saw that coming.
The Lakers have an $8.9 million trade exception, acquired from the Dallas Mavericks for Lamar Odom, to absorb salary. Sessions makes $4.3 million this season and has a player option for $4.6 million for the 2012-13 season. Cleveland is interested in stockpiling draft picks in potential deals, sources said. Several teams have inquired about Sessions lately, front-office sources said.
There aren't really any players on the Lakers that the Cavaliers would be interested in, although LA does have two first round draft picks this year. The problem with these picks is that they will likely be very late in the first round (from LA and from Dallas).
If Chris Grant manages to get both of those picks from the Lakers in exchange for Ramon Sessions, that's a deal that I would be ecstatic with. The picks would in the mid-20s and could possibly be packaged to trade up further in the draft. Even if the Cavs can only manage to get one first round pick from the Lakers, that'd be great. Sessions is too good to be a back-up on this team, in my opinion, and in a deep draft, the Cavs could get a decent player with either of the picks.
I'm not sure if a deal will happen, but I'm willing to bet that right now, Grant is asking for two picks and will eventually come down to just one and a throw-in player or second-rounder to get the deal done.
What say you?
NBA Rumors: Chris Kaman On The Trade Block
Reports out of New Orleans are that the Hornets are actively shopping newly acquired center, Chris Kaman. He doesn't really fit into the future plans GM Dell Demps has for the team.
There are rumors floating around the inter webs that there is some moderate interest from the Cavaliers and GM Chris Grant. Kaman, who is in the final year of his deal which pays him $14 million this year, is set to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer.
Kaman has had a terrible start with the Hornets and about the only thing he's even done passably well is make his free throws. Wait, he's only shot 19 of them. Yea, he's been gross this year. He's a low efficiency big man who doesn't ever get to the stripe and seriously do anything even average except maybe grab defensive boards.
There is one scenario where we should be interested in Kaman, but no more. Find out what that is after the jump.
NBA Rumors: Cavaliers Trade Options
After Tuesday night's game, Byron Scott expressed his desire to hold on to Anderson Varejao past the trade deadline. It has been my opinion for some time now, that both Anderson Varejao and Ramon Sessions need to be traded to other teams for the Cavaliers to acquire the necessary assets to rebuild.
There's still plenty of time before the trade deadline on March 15th, 2012, but it's never too early to start brainstorming some ideas. Below are 5 trade ideas that I think are both doable and attractive to both teams.
Disclaimer: These trades are just speculation on my part (with help from DocRosTov). They are not actually being discussed as far as we know (although they probably should be).
Cleveland sends Anderson Varejao to Memphis Grizzles
Memphis sends O.J. Mayo and 2012 first round pick to Cleveland Cavaliers
This is one of my favorites. Mayo has some obvious talent but doesn't really get good minutes in Memphis and is clearly underachieving. He is a restricted free agent after this season but probably wouldn't garner much on the market. I think he has some potential that could be accessed with a change of scenery and the necessary minutes. With the injuries to Darrell Arthur and Zach Randolph, the Grizzlies find themselves pretty thin on the frontline. This trade makes a ton of sense for both teams, in my opinion.
Cleveland sends Anderson Varejao to Portland Trail Blazers
Portland sends Wesley Matthews and 2012 first round pick to Cleveland Cavaliers
With the addition of Jamal Crawford, the Blazers would now have the ability to trade Wes Matthews and get some defensive help in the paint. Marcus Camby is pretty old and Anderson Varejao next to LaMarcus Aldridge would be a pretty awesome front court. Matthews acts as a viable shooting guard for the Cavs. The draft pick would definitely be at the very end of the first round, so perhaps not that valuable. However, when you're rebuilding, it cannot hurt to add draft picks.
NBA Trade Rumors: J.J. Hickson Soon To Be A Member Of Sacramento Kings
The writing was on the wall during the NBA Draft when the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Tristan Thompson with the #4 overall pick - J.J. Hickson's days in Cleveland were numbered. With a Lockout pending tonight at midnight, those days may be about to come to an end.
According to SBN-Cleveland, via various outlets, the Cavaliers are about to make a deal with the Sacramento Kings, sending Hickson out west for SF Omri Casspi.
ESPN.com's Marc Stein tweeted the news first, while Sports Illustrated scribe (and former Kings beat writer) Sam Amick added more information, saying, "Omri Casspi was told by Kings management that he is likely to be traded to Cleveland for JJ Hickson in the next couple of hours."
Hickson, 22, is a three-year veteran with career averages of 9.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 49.5 percent shooting. He's coming off a campaign in which he posted career-highs in scoring, rebounding, and assists, as well as a career-low in shooting percentage. The Cavaliers' selection of power forward Tristan Thompson in the 2011 NBA Draft indicates they believe he has a brighter future than Hickson.
With Christian Eyenga the only small forward on the team, Casspi will get an opportunity to play and perhaps even start for the Cavaliers - if there is a season, that is.
Former Cavs Coach Mike Brown To Coach Lakers
Yes, that Mike Brown. The former head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers is seemingly next in line to coach the Los Angeles Lakers. Check out the report HERE.
Brown was the head coach of the Cavaliers from 2005-2010 and was fired following the loss to the Boston Celtics in the 2nd round of the 2010 playoffs. During his tenure with Cleveland, the defensive minded coach had a relatively impressive list of accomplishments. His Cavaliers teams reached the 2007 Finals and posted back-to-back 60+ win seasons in '09 and '10. He compiled an overall regular season record of 272-138 (.663) which ranks 5th all-time in win percentage. Brown was also honored with the 2009 NBA Coach of the Year Award. Only a year later, he was relieved of his duties and worked this past season as an analyst for ESPN. Fast forward one more year and Mike Brown is the replacement for the legendary Phil Jackson.
This is a surprising move for the Lakers organization as many assumed Brian Shaw would be simply be promoted from assistant to head coach. Cavs fans have had the most experience with Brown as a head coach so what say you? Does this make you root for the Lakers more or less? Personally, I'd like to see Brown do well, so I am tempted to casually root for him. Is this a good choice for the Lakers? I honestly do not know. It is an interesting selection, but the Lakers must have really liked something about him to go away from Shaw. This doesn't directly impact the Cavaliers, but it is certainly interesting nonetheless.
NBA Draft 2011: Pre-Tournament Update
Before the 'March Madness' begins thought I would give everyone an idea of what the lottery picks and the draft are looking like right now. The Cavaliers are still sitting a top with the best chances to land the #1 overall pick. While our pick from he Clippers is giving The Cavaliers the 8th best set of odds. Depending on how the tournament plays out, we should know for sure who the Cavaliers will be drafting.
