Cleveland Cavaliers to play preseason game in Brazil against Miami Heat

The Cavaliers will play an NBA game in South America this fall.

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

As part of the NBA's Global Games program, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat will play one of their preseason games in Rio de Janeiro on October 11th.

This news comes from an official NBA press release, so it's officially official. It's a preseason game, so obviously it doesn't matter in the standings -- but I think this is pretty cool nonetheless. The big thing to note here is that Anderson Varejao will have a chance to play in his home country of Brazil. That's pretty neat.

Here's what the NBA's press release says:

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat will play the NBA's second game ever in South America when the teams meet on Oct. 11, at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As part of the game, Cavaliers center Anderson Varejão will play an NBA game in front of his countrymen for the first time.

There you go. As a part of the Global Games series, the San Antonio Spurs will also play a preseason game in Turkey and in Germany. The Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings will also play preseason games against each other on Shanghai and Beijing, China.
