Open Thread: Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters take part in Team USA scrimmage

Kyrie Irving is in a battle to make the U.S. national team. Can he help his cause tonight?

USA TODAY Sports

It's been a hectic summer for the Cavs, but outside of Summer League, there hasn't been a whole lot of actual basketball. That changes tonight. Sort of. Team USA is working out in Las Vegas as they get ready for the World Cup in Spain next month. Kyrie Irving is in a real battle to make the roster, and Dion Waiters is working out with the select team. Tonight, at 9:00 ET on ESPN, an intrasquad scrimmage/exhibition will be televised. It'll be our first chance since April to see live game action with Irving and Waiters.

Last summer when this happened Irving and  Pelicans power forward Anthony Davis were the standout players of an entertaining game. The stakes are a little bit higher this year, with Coach Krzyzewski and Jerry Colangelo getting ready to make the final cuts. A trip to Spain and more time practicing with the national team could be great for Irving as he continues his development. That being said, if he doesn't make it he is still 22 years old and has plenty of time. There is always an injury risk, and staying home can help prevent that.

Either way, hang out here in the comments and watch Kyrie and Dion do their thing.
