The Cleveland Cavaliers announced today that they have signed rookie center Alex Kirk:
The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed free agent center Alex Kirk, Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts. Per league policy, terms of the contract were not released.
This was a little bit of a surprise. Kirk wasn't particularly impressive in Summer League, and Draft Express had him rated as the 89th best prospect heading into June's draft. He went undrafted after graduating and leaving New Mexico a year early. He was inconsistent as a Junior, though New Mexico itself had a fine season. Kirk is just under 6'11 in shoes and weighs over 250 pounds. That type of size must have been appealing to general manager David Griffin and coach David Blatt.
It's unknown whether or not the contract is guaranteed, though it likely isn't. There is probably a bit of guaranteed money in it, and this makes sure that Kirk comes to camp with the Cavs. If he impresses the team in training camp, he's got a shot. You can't teach size. HIs wingspan of 7'3.5 gives him some defensive upside. We will have to see how it plays out.
