Cavs waive four players, roster stands at 16

Three days before the roster deadline, the Cavs cut ties with four players.

With just under a week before the season begins, the Cleveland Cavaliers are one step closer toward setting their final roster.

The Cavs announced today that they waived forward Austin Daye, guard D.J. Stephens, forward Jack Cooley and guard Dionte Christmas. This move puts the Cavs current roster at 16, one more than the league maximum of 15 that they are allowed to carry during the season.

With most of the Cavs roster in place, that leaves only one spot open between guards Jared Cunningham and Quinn Cook.

Cunningham, entering his fourth year out of Oregon State, has averaged 12.3 points and 3.4 assists per game in seven preseason games for the Cavs, including a 31-point outburst against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Cook, a rookie from Duke, has averaged 3.3 points and 2.2 assists per game in six preseason games for the Cavs.

The Cavs have until Oct. 26 to make their roster final for opening night, which is Oct. 27 against the Chicago Bulls.
